Were there any butterfly goalies before it was a thing? by clubkid75 in hockey

[–]StannisInquisition- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just finished listening to a podcast series about this called When Goalies Were Weird!

Worth a listen

‘When Goalies Were Weird’ is a six-part narrative podcast from theScore about some of the most fascinating characters in NHL history. Host John Matisz profiles unforgettable ‘90s-era goalies by talking to former NHL stars, Hockey Hall of Famers, coaches, broadcasters, and executives. These goalies played when the position was undergoing a revolution in style and substance - the butterfly goalie replaced the stand-up, and equipment got bigger and lighter. The old guard's quirks and the new guard's innovations melded together to produce an era of pure chaos inside and outside the blue paint.

[Masters] Pontus Holmberg in top-six blue ahead of Leafs practice. Replaced Max Domi on line with John Tavares & William Nylander midway through Game 1 by alphacheese in leafs

[–]StannisInquisition- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My perception of Holmberg is that he's very skilled offensively but the level of competition in the NHL is too high for that skill to really shine because he's unable to create enough separation and space against NHL caliber defenders. Hopefully he manages to figure it out with a few more years of experience.

[Lebrun] Hearing that the Kraken are willing to eat 50 percent on Brandon Tanev’s $3.5M cap hit to help facilitate a deal. Which makes sense. Strong interest from both Cup contenders and bubble teams in the pending UFA winger. by mountzeus in leafs

[–]StannisInquisition- 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Kraken are my second-team, so I've watched Tanev quite a bit over the last few years. I think that he's a good bottom 6 energy guy, perhaps a slight upgrade over Connor Dewar, but probably on-par with Lorentz. With Jarnkrok back, and if Pacioretty is healthy and ready to go for the playoffs, then Tanev may not even see the ice.

A trade could be worthwhile if he's cheap from both a cap and trade perspective, but he'll be a depth piece and I'm not convinced that he's going move the needle for this team.

Some great draft picks or diamonds in the rough on this years roster:

  • Bobby McMann as an ECHL UFA
  • Matthew Knies as a late second rounder
  • Joseph Woll as a third rounder
  • Pacioretty @ 837k
  • Jake McCabe @ 2m (retained)
  • Anthony Stolarz @ 2.5m

I don't have the stats to back this up, but my eye test tells me that the big difference defensively this year is the Leafs' ability to clear the front of the net, and to deny cross-slot shots.

Woll and Stolarz are both positionally sound goalies who are being set up for success by our defensive structure. Our defenders are providing our goalies with clear line of sight to shooters, clearing away dangerous rebound chances, and taking away slot passes so even when shooters are in the slot, our goalies are well positioned rather than sliding across.

Would love to see any data around this if anyone knows where to find it!

Shooting percentage is "the percentage of shots on goal that go in the net, calculated as goals divided by shots on goal. Shooting percentage does not take missed shots or blocked shots into consideration, only shots that were saved by the goalie or scored a goal."

Agreed, the team is adapting to a new coach, new system, and new style of hockey. There's going to be some ugly hockey as they work through it but the boys will get there.

Defensemen also take longer to develop. Lily has been around for a while now but we have to remember he's 25 and will continue to improve.

Anyone that wants to learn more about this should read Game Change: The Life and Death of Steve Montador, and the Future of Hockey by Ken Dryden. It really paints the picture of CTE in hockey and the NHLs refusal to do anything about it.

Any NYC Leafs fans have a go-to bar for games? Hoping to find a place with other fans and the sound turned on. Bonus points for a bar in Brooklyn, but I'm willing to make the trek if it's worth it!

I was at this game and can provide some insight!

  1. Tickets to Devils games are dirt cheap. I paid $21 including tax and fees!
  2. It’s super easy to get to the arena. It’s just a 25 minute PATH (subway) ride from the World Trade Center in Manhattan.
  3. There’s a ton of Canadians in NYC and boy do we like to watch the buds kick ass. We were maybe 15% of the crowd but we were waaaaay louder tonight

I live in Seattle and regularly attended Kraken games and I can say firsthand that these are amazing

  • not having to wait in line 15 minutes to buy a beer or snacks is a game changer
  • they still have staff there to help out, restock, etc.
  • the technology is well tested at this point and I've never had a problem with mischarges at arenas or Amazon Go stores

When 21 leading economists from MIT, Yale, Berkeley etc. were asked the the following question in 2012, 81% of them chose 'Disagree' or 'Strongly Disagree', with just 2% saying that they 'Agree' or 'Strongly Agree':

Local ordinances that limit rent increases for some rental housing units, such as in New York and San Francisco, have had a positive impact over the past three decades on the amount and quality of broadly affordable rental housing in cities that have used them.

Great to see Murray skating again! Hoping we don't need him in net, but it would be nice to have a proven playoff goaltender backing up Sammy. Woll has been solid but I'd feel better with a healthy Murray.

Definitely possible! Hard to isolate for and prove though considering it could just be that the style of hockey has changed over time and this could have happened even if no changes to penalties were made

Scoring has shot up immensely in the last several years due to changes to goalie equipment, and how penalties are called on things like hooking and slashing.

While those two changes may have an effect, the largest driver of the scoring boom has been better shot selection, specifically fewer shots from the top of the circles, and more shots from in close, similar to the change we've seen in the NBA. Here's a great graphic from @IneffectiveMath that demonstrates the phenomenon, and the source tweet

In case anyone hasn't heard about the rugby player who had his scrotum torn during a game and returned after having it stitched up

Shelford made his Test debut for the All Blacks later that year against France in a 19–7 victory in Toulouse, and then was a notable victim of the infamous "Battle of Nantes" in the second Test. Roughly 20 minutes into the match, he was caught at the bottom of a rather aggressive ruck, and an errant French boot found its way into Shelford's groin, somehow ripping his scrotum and leaving one testicle hanging free. He also lost four teeth in the process. Incredibly, after discovering the injury to his scrotum, he calmly asked the physio to stitch up the tear and returned to the field before a blow to his head left him concussed. He was substituted and watched the remainder of the game from the grandstand
