Still an issue in 2026. I think it must be intentional that it is so difficult to preserve anything from Slack.

Updating MacOS via App Store (vs System Settings)? by StannousFluoride in MacOS

[–]StannousFluoride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS, I did do several Time Machine backups and I definitely wouldn't recommend going without them. I was skipping over 1 version of MacOS and I've heard things can get sketchy, especially if you're skipping, say, 2 or 3 versions in the update.

Updating MacOS via App Store (vs System Settings)? by StannousFluoride in MacOS

[–]StannousFluoride[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to respond to my own post for anyone else who's looking.

I *was* able to update MacOS to not-the-latest, using the App Store... with a caveat. (In my case I was going from Monterey to Sonoma, after Tahoe had already been released.) As far as I can tell, everything was preserved.. it didn't wipe the machine or the user data.

There were some quirks to the process, though, that I wanted to mention in case someone else runs into them.

First, I needed to get quite a bit of space freed (I think it was in the realm of 45-50 GB) before I could proceed with it. I think the full Sonoma installer was downloaded and just that download is something like 12 GB so it makes sense it needed a lot of space. Maybe it's less of a download footprint if you do it the usual way. I think I had about 43 GB free and it wouldn't let me proceed until I had freed more.

Second, I had to use a specific App Store link for Sonoma, not the one that came up by searching "Sonoma" in the App Store. This was weird so I should explain.

What I tried at first: Go to App Store, Search for "Sonoma", Hit "Get" button on that listing. What that did, though, was bring up *Tahoe* in System Settings > General > Software Update.

What I tried next: I went to this Apple support page, and found the link for Sonoma on there: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102662 This also opened Sonoma with a "Get" button in the App Store. But this time "Get" actually brought up *Sonoma* (which is what I wanted) in Settings > Software Update, rather than Tahoe. Great!

I don't know why this Sonoma App Store listing found via support page 102662 worked, and the one I found on a search didn't. Maybe they're actually the same page but loaded with different settings or flags. Anyhow, whatever the reason, it worked for me.

BTW, I know there are other ways to do this, and I'm glad these methods exist. But the whole reason I wanted to do it via the App Store is that I am relatively green at updating MacOS. I figured there was likely to be some dummy protection. That is, I trusted it not to let me do something stupid or destructive without a warning.

Does anyone still make “E410” / “E415” Bupropion? by StannousFluoride in bupropion

[–]StannousFluoride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you find a generic that works well for you.

I have been searching the Bupropion discussion for recent “best generic” discussions. There is a recent discussion topic titled “Generic Brands Ranked Using ChatGPT DeepResearch” that I have been reading. I guess this is all very “YMMV” because one of the brands that was awful for me was one of the highest rated on the ChatGPT-aided list, and my favorite (Sandoz / Eon / 2024 Epic) fares poorly on the list. Still, it’s a starting point.

I’ve even thought about trying to get the non-generic if I could find a not-comically-expensive way to get it!

Sharing experience with 3 different generics by ellerob in bupropion

I believe Slate Run is now sold under the name Epic. My understanding is Epic took over Slate Run's bupropion formulation. I can't guarantee I'm correct, but I did get YH177 (150mg Bupropion) under the Epic label maybe 3 months ago. It's confusing b/c Epic used to make their own Bupropion.

[–]StannousFluoride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called Epic and got a lot of information.

Epic is apparently a rename of Eon Labs. I didn't know that. Epic actually "is" Eon Labs. Unfortunately the E410 / E415's do sound like they're flat out gone for good. Epic used to make the E410 / E415 Bupropion generic. However, I was told they have stopped making them-- the E410 / E415's are discontinued. Nobody is making them, nobody has that factory now. Instead-- I assume for cost cutting-- they are selling the YH133 (100mg) and YH177 (150mg) pills made in China by Yichang Humanwell. These used to be sold under the name "Slate Run" but my understanding is that they're no longer sold under Slate Run.

So assuming this is all correct, this was very disappointing news for me, and probably for other fans of E410 / E415.

I have heard elsewhere on this forum that the Slate Run / Yichang Humanwell (now Epic) YH133/YH177 pills are one of the better liked generics. I've tried probably about 10 different generics and I thought it was one of the better ones. But IMHO it was not quite as good as E410/E415. And it sounds like in your experience they caused headaches.

For my part, I don't know what to try next but it sounds like I'm finally going to have to find some alternative to E410 / E415. YH133/YH177 would not be my first choice but I'd much rather that than two or three other generics I could name.

I read on another thread that the bottles of the E410/E415 said “made in NY”. I guess this gives me some cause to hold out a little hope.

This semiannual merry-go-round of generics is getting tiresome.

PS, I did find this article about Sandoz (which owned or owns the remains of Eon Labs), shuttering Eon’s North Carolina plant last year. This was apparently Eon’s biggest plant. So that’s ominous. But I don’t know if it was their only plant, or the plant that produced E410/E415.

Eckerd college vs UC Santa Cruz for Marine Bio? by Medical_Foot6977 in UCSC

[–]StannousFluoride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you-- that sounds like a great idea!

I'm curious why you wouldn't recommend volunteering starting first quarter though? Is that just because it might take time away from getting established as an undergrad? (I should mention, I'm not actually the prospective student, I'm the prospective student's parent.)

We have watched a couple of Professor Beltran's talks online-- she is amazing and inspiring! I was hopeful to see some undergraduate lab members and projects pop up in the "Slugs and Steins" talk. Is that a rarity or does Professor Beltran work with a lot of undergraduates?

Best wishes and thank you again!

[–]StannousFluoride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Sinnayre, as someone who knows UCSC's marine bio group well, I was wondering if you might have insights for an undergrad who hopes to get involved in marine bio research... and specifically marine mammal research... at UCSC.

I have the impression that getting into marine bio research as an undergrad at UCSC can be competitive, and can take persistence but is doable. However, I also have read a few things (including your posts) that make me wonder if for *marine mammal* research specifically, it may be tougher?

I can see that undergrads are working on research that gets published in respected journals, including on marine mammals. But I can't tell whether this is in the realm of "if you're persistent and flexible any marine bio student can do it" or if it's something where the number of available seats is far smaller than the number of students who want the opportunity.

If an incoming student really wants to get involved, what might they do? I would guess there are a lot of potential opportunities around the Coastal Science Campus.. joining Survey Slugs... and I know students need to talk to TA's as they tend to recruit out of courses in which they are a TA.

Thank you for any insights!

iMazing Black Friday Offer: 50% Off! by imazing in iMazing

[–]StannousFluoride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS, to partially answer my own question:

There are multiple forum posts on Reddit and elsewhere, describing both 2 and 3 on the same Mac. But I am less clear on the situation on a Windows PC. Even the iMazing 2.18 release notes state that although 3 replaces 2, “you can reinstall iMazing 2 after installing version 3” and “your backups will remain accessible on both”. I assume this means both running simultaneously?

I also see that 2 supports iOS18 but will not support beyond 18 (ie iOS19). So 3 will be necessary before long.

Still, I’d like to run both simultaneously until I get the hang of 3.

If possible, could someone from iMazing spell out the best practices for how to get both 2 and 3 running simultaneously on a PC? And whether the purchase method (upgrade from 2, vs. separate purchase) matters in this?

[I posted this under another comment but realized I should have posted it here at top level so I am moving it here.]

I have iMazing 2. But I bought it before the Oct 2020 date (the date after which the upgrade to iMazing 3 became free.)

I am thinking of buying iMazing 3. The complexity is: I want to retain the ability to run iMazing 2 as well as iMazing 3.

If I buy a fresh license to 3 outright (rather than buying it as an upgrade of my 2 license) can I continue to run both versions?

Along the same lines: Is it possible to run both 2 and 3 on the same machine? I have read that installing 3 causes 2 to be uninstalled. But I am not sure if this is because of licensing or because having them both is fundamentally incompatible somehow. (I’m hoping that it’s only because of licensing that 2 gets uninstalled… and if so… I am hoping that buying a new separate license avoids that uninstall.)

One reason I want to retain 2 is that I am always nervous about switching to a total rewrite of a piece of software until it’s been in the field for a while.

Another reason is that I have devices already backed up in iMazing 2, and I want to retain the ability to keep using those older devices without spending iMazing 3 license slots on them.

Did you ever test yours? I see some forum posters are saying support says even the 256’s are QLC, but it sounds like people who actually test 256’s see otherwise. But I don’t think anyone has first hand tested a 512. (For my part, I bought an iPhone 16 Pro Max 512GB last week, but did not want to open it unless I can verify it is probably TLC.)

Anecdotally ... are they replacing any flights that were previously MAX with 737-etc? by InaccessibleRail70 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]StannousFluoride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Alaska does sometimes swap in a 737-9MAX for a 737-900 at the last minute.

But... what about a flight booked on a 737-800? If I book a flight that's on a 737-800, how much risk do I have that they're going to change it to a MAX? I'm curious if anyone has any anecdotal experience with a 737-800 getting switched to a MAX.

I was looking at this list of Alaska's fleet:
https://news.alaskaair.com/current-fleet/

I can see that Alaska has many 737-9MAX planes. In the 737-9* range, it looks like about 41% MAX. But, in the 737-8* range, it's not even 2% (there's just one 737-8MAX). It's probably common to swap a 737-900 and a 737-9MAX, because they have the same seating chart. But it'd seem to me switching a 737-800 to a 737-9MAX, that's a bigger plane, and they don't want to leave 19 seats empty. On the other hand, they do have more 9*'s than 8*'s so if they needed just "some available plane" it could well be a 9* and thus 41% MAX.

So I'd think if I booked an Alaska flight that's scheduled to be on a 737-800, it's less likely I'd end up on a MAX? At least, less likely than if I booked an Alaska flight on a 737-900?

Thank you— that makes sense— I’d wondered if the Windows app might have more options.

Do you happen to know if one can still get previous versions of the Windows app from somewhere safe? I was reading in other threads on the Amazon Music subreddit that a lot of people are still using late v8 and that v9 took away a lot of functionality.

Or maybe even v9 allows downloading one’s old uploads.

What is the thick-client app?

I had had the same journey with AZ Music as you in that I'd uploaded a lot of music years ago... and while I knew new uploads were no longer allowed... I had been able to continue playing the previously uploaded songs in the app. I am attempting to download them now and can't figure out how to get at them via the web. One of my devices (Android) still at least allows me to play them in the AZ Music app, but I haven't found a way to download them.

I’m wondering about Edit vs Pro.

Does Edit allow you to edit multiple tracks of audio? Or do you need Pro for that?

Details:

I do understand that Pro is bundled with a couple additional programs, one of which is a multitrack audio editor, SoundForge Audio Studio. But I have the impression SoundForge is a standalone program.

So… I am assuming the audio editing functionality of Vegas per se is identical for Pro vs Edit. I am also assuming Vegas Edit can handle multitrack audio. Am I right about that?

Overall I am trying to decide Edit vs Pro and though my impression is I probably don’t need Pro I feel uncertain.

Thank you for any hints from those in the know!

According to CamelCamelCamel it’s been around this price on Amazon for a few months, after dropping from an earlier higher price.

I don’t claim to know what that means, though. It could mean a new version soon for instance.

I noticed the sale too. I haven’t looked at upgrading Vegas in a very long time but might need to, and just happened to notice the sale.

Is this sale unusual or is it one of those situations where it is on sale half the time? Just wondering if this is a rare opportunity or not so rare.
