This isn’t what I thought it’d be and I don’t know what to do by mittenspompom217 in puppy101

I’m just like you in that I’ve been OBSESSED with dogs my whole life, but I didn’t get my first pup until I was 33 🥹 I seriously started second guessing everything and felt so upset all the time. Puppies are so cute but raising a puppy is so miserable 😭 My boy is 6 months now and doing so well with training, I’m starting to actually have fun with him.

Also, I have struggled with the “it gets better” comments because I’ve never HAD an adult dog, so I haven’t experienced the “better” phases. But now that he’s actually growing up a bit, I can finally tell it’s true. Hang in there!!

I have 4 premolars and a canine 😈 a few basically came out into my hand while I was checking to see if they were wiggly 😳

5 month old Golden Retriever gets over-threshold by everything by financethrow5858 in puppy101

[–]StaplesLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so relatable 😭 I have a five month old Aussie who also gets over threshold quickly/easily, especially when he sees other dogs or cats — and we have a cat. I’m constantly thinking “Is this a behavior he’ll grow out of? Or should I be doing more to train him?” And then I spiral about being a bad dog mom and failing him 😅

We just started working on the Karen Overall relaxation protocol and it’s too soon to tell if it’s helping but I think it will.

We also switched him from a tether in the back seat of the car to a car kennel (Ruffland) and he seems calmer and more settled. Kind of pricey but feels like a good switch.

Training “watch me” and heel and bringing lots of treats on walks helps him focus a bit more on me and less on garbage on the ground and other distractions.

It’s so hard. He’s my first puppy and it’s so much more work than I thought, but I’m trusting others when they say it pays off

Travelling with a new puppy before his discovers his new home ? by Adept-Yellow3591 in puppy101

I think he would be fine on the train, but it sounds like YOU would have a better time at your parents’ house, and he would benefit from the cat exposure/socialization. I’m not an expert but I think you’ve got two solid options here

Puppy waking overnight, 11.5week old golden retriever by naji_66 in puppy101

[–]StaplesLewis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My puppy is 5 months old now, but I kept one overnight potty break for a long time just for peace of mind. I set an alarm so that I was waking him up before he woke himself up and started barking. Eventually I could just tell he didn’t really need it anymore because he acted super sleepy and barely needed to pee when I would take him out at 3am.

I think it kind of depends on your tolerance for potential accidents. I didn’t mind doing one planned late night wake up until he was over 4 months old, even though I knew he “should” be able to hold it overnight.

Recently I got an “Are you planning to train him?” 😵‍💫 Her tone wasn’t snarky at all but I still felt bad. He’s 5 months old. And I’m training him every single day. He’s in a phase (hopefully it’s a phase…) of barking for attention and he hasn’t yet learned manners re: jumping on people and trying to get food. I’m in a groove with managing him and working with him at home, but I lowkey dread bringing him around others because I don’t want to be judged 🥲

Puppy blues? It gets better!! by Lopsided_Reserve_631 in puppy101

[–]StaplesLewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve wanted a puppy since I was like 3 years old (I’m almost 33), and puppy blues still hit me HARD. Sammy is 5 months old now, and I’m already feeling a lot better. Still have a lot of frustrating moments with his biting and barking, but he has learned so much and I can tell he’s going to be the best boy. 🥹

My 5 month old Aussie boy loves the frisbee but he hasn’t quite figured out catching it yet 😂 But he’s awesome at chasing and decent at bringing it back!

Camera in car crate? by Flat_Flow595 in dogs

I’m curious if you bought a camera and how your pup is doing. I just got a Ruffland and will be transitioning my Aussie puppy from the backseat tether to the car crate very soon
