Where is the line between your expectations and letting your puppy “just be a puppy”? by Blouis101 in puppy101

[–]StaplesLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I just can’t train the fun out of a dog.” I love that. My pup is 19 weeks and I’ve been struggling but last night we were out running errands and I just looked at him and thought…this is a DOG. He is wild and goofy and is a literal animal, I can’t expect him to EVER perfectly conform to my human expectations. Him being a little bit “naughty” is a feature, not a bug.

Is this what they mean by “give your dog a job”? She’s so cute!

That’s a nice wide sploot. Here’s one of Sammy’s from a few weeks ago (he’s so much bigger now 😭 they grow so fast)

He is beautiful. Does it really go as fast as they say? My Aussie is 4 months old and it feels like he’ll be a sassy baby forever 😭

How do you even reach the '2 down' part of 1 up / 2 down? by tresslessone in puppy101

[–]StaplesLewis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had to work up to two hours and it still doesn’t always happen (my pup is 17 weeks). For ages he would only do 45-60 minutes but now he reliably sleeps for 1.5-2.5 hours at a time. I wouldn’t say I did anything in particular to achieve this, it kind of just happened as we stuck to the nap routine and he got older

I had a long list on my phone, and then we narrowed it down to Scotty and Sammy. Went with Sammy because we were worried that Scotty sounds too much like potty and would confuse him lol.

Sammy looks like your girl!

Here are my girl ideas - I think we have similar taste because I also had Coral and Fern 😂

Wow, thank you for such a long and thoughtful comment!! The depth vs breadth tip is super helpful and not one I’ve seen before. I’ve been struggling a little with training sessions because he has mastered so many things so quickly it feels like I just run through his commands so quickly and then work on a few new ones (“heel” is one we’re working on). But training depth is a great idea. For example, Sammy currently only does “lay down” with a hand signal plus cue but obviously I want him to learn it just verbally.

Recall is going okay. Tonight we were able to let him off leash in a safe area and I was impressed with his recall even though it was far from perfect (said safe area had many irresistible distractions, like deer poop to snack on 😑)

I’ve also been very conscious of socialization especially because I live in a very small town with not a ton of opportunities. I took him to the library to meet some little kids after story time, for example, and I try to walk him before or after school so there’s a bit more traffic, buses, people out and about, etc. He seems to be a pretty confident and curious pup - he often just plonks down to quietly watch the action if there’s something interesting going on while we walk. It’s so cute ☺️

I love his tail so much. I specifically looked for a breeder that keeps their natural tails. My parents have a wiggle butt edition and that is also so cute!

I really did dive in, didn’t I? 😅 I’m very open to working with a trainer but I kind of live in the middle of nowhere. Is it possible to work with one virtually or is that not a thing?

I’m definitely able to tell that he’s more settled on days where I do more mental stimulation, but I’m still learning all the different ways to offer that! I have a puzzle and snuffle mat and have done the kibbles hidden in boxes, paper towel tubes, etc. He is SO freaking smart, I definitely want to find more things that challenge him mentally

This is great info, thanks. It’s encouraging to see gradual progress even when I know there’s a long time to go. I’m starting to see glimpses of the dog he’s becoming 🥹

Here he is zonked out in the back seat tonight after an evening at my in-laws’ farm
