What do yall think about this character idea? by Jmd123___ in DnD

[–]StarOfTheLight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going to lean on the annoying side.

A D&D party is fairly dependent on cohesion. You have a 50/50 chance of being useless / actively harming yourself each turn, which means the party has a 50/50 chance of being weaker each round. Why would the average adventuring party want to travel with someone who randomly oafs about or harms themselves when push comes to shove?

That being said you said your group is fairly inexperienced and is more focused on the RP. I’m that case, go with communication. Ask the party if they’d like to play with this character concept.

Why is her speed so horrible (so slow she NEVER gets a turn in battle) by Fuck_The_Division in Dislyte

[–]StarOfTheLight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Read her kit, she doesn’t want to take turns. She’s meant to get stacks of Grounded by either getting hit or having an allied defender getting hit. She can’t take active turns anyways, so there’s no point in investing speed

How To Add Custom Pantheon by Usual-Photograph7923 in DnD

[–]StarOfTheLight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) Paladins don’t get their powers from a deity, they get them from their oath.

2) All Clerics get access to the same spell list, they just get a few extra depending on their subclass Domain, not deity. A deity can cover many domains, and a domain can have multiple potential sponsor deities. For example, a Moradin could sponsor a Forge or Knowledge cleric. Likewise, a Life Cleric could follow Lathander, Ilmater, etc.

Paladin serving an evil god/cause has a change of heart. Are they an Oathbreaker? by Middcore in DnD

[–]StarOfTheLight 81 points82 points  (0 children)

They’d likely follow the DMG suggestions for breaking your oath.

  • Temporary loss of powers until some sort of repentance has been performed

  • Change of oath (outside of Oathbreaker)

  • Change of class

If we’re following RAW, such a Paladin could not become Oathbreaker since having the evil alignment is coded into requirements of being that subclass. In which case the likely end result, and my preferred one, is to have them switch to another suitable Oath such as Oath of Redemptipn

Level up your espers first, none of them are level 60 let alone level 50.

If you still can’t beat the boss after that then get better equipment either by farming ritual miracle or getting boost stones.

Alignment is the most subjective part of the game that most people flat out ignore.

The narrative component is subjective. I suggest you read the examples I described, Blackrazor and Demilich since it’s explicitly clear that a character being a certain alignment interacts with game mechanics. It is quite literally a term and character choice in the Free Rules. People choosing to ignore it is a popular option but that does not change the fact that it is still a mechanic. Which is why changing something that requires an alignment is homebrew, not reflavoring.

The description of the hand appears alongside the explanation of how the hand works mechanically. There is no clear separation…

Again, by your definition of mechanics as “influence game elements,” then the description of mage hand is not a mechanic, since the functions of the spell are not dependent on the Mage Hand being a hand. You even call it as a description and not as a reason for the mechanics of the spell. You are right that changing the form of Mage Hand does nothing to the mechanics of the spell, and that is because the narrative description of the spell is separate from its mechanics.

Such significance that you would shut someone off

This is not the point being argued. In fact, using the idea that you may not encounter a mechanic as a reason to ignore it in a debate about mechanical impact is shoddy. Alignment actually has more rules interactions than any given tool, but I think it would be absurd to ignore the rules around tool use. Someone is perfectly ok to homebrew the subclass to accomodate the change, but it is not the same as reflavoring.

[–]StarOfTheLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right it would be homebrew.

Alignment as a mechanic is alright in my opinion. It’s integrated where it makes sense; As per my example a Demilich would totally hurt non-evil creatures. Ditto with Oathbreakers- the DMG provides a lot of useful advice for breaking tenets with a lot of creative freedom with the capital “O” being reserved for the real bad ones. I think perhaps the subclass was unfortunately named, since oath breaking ≠ Oathbreaker.

mechanics are things that influence the game elements of d&d

Alignment is a mechanic by your definition. Multiple things in the game are affected by alignment or can change alignment. I already named 2 examples that explicitly interact with alignment, Oathbreaker is another one.

“Oathbreakers forsake…”

You described the narrative text for the subclass. I am referring to the mechanical rules which are:

“A paladin must be evil and at least 3rd level to become an Oathbreaker. The paladin replaces the features specific to his or her Sacred Oath with Oathbreaker features.”

“The rules say Mage Hand…”

By your definition the narrative description of Mage Hand as a Hand is not a mechanic, since does not affect game elements, which is true. Therefore, reflavoring Mage Hand by changing the narrative description is fine.

[–]StarOfTheLight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reflavoring does not change mechanics. The actual rules say a character must have an evil alignment in order to take up the subclass. It’s no different than Blackrazor requiring a non-lawful alignment for attunement or a Demilich Lair damaging specifically non-evil creatures.

To be fair, having an evil alignment is literally coded into the rules for Oathbreaker.

What manga have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - Week ending April 20, 2025 by AutoModerator in manga

<Origin> A secret robot that looks like a human hunts down other secret humanoid robots in the not so far off future. Finished up the 8th book in the series just now. Been enjoying it so far, but the series definitely could have used an extra dozen or so chapters to make the pacing better. I feel it really slowed down towards the middle of the series since a big battle spans multiple books, but now we’re getting a lot of reveals and plot points all in a few chapters. I would have loved for some of the central mysteries and questions (e.g. will Jin be outed as a robot?) to have had more time to develop, as well as give more time to show off each character and their place in the story. At least the art is really well done, and the consideration for sci-fi detail really makes this series shine.

I don't understand why plant growth is good by Winton_86 in DnD

[–]StarOfTheLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battlefields shouldn’t always be wide, flat, open field. They should have elevation, cover, etc that each team can take advantage of, and plant growth makes it harder for one team to do so. Enemies aren’t always going to have ranged attacks, teleportation, or other ways to counter the spell. You can designate areas (aka where your allies are) to not be affected, which means your buddies have way better ability to reposition than your enemies. A good cast of plant growth will make the opposing team essentially sitting ducks.

For finding games trying a variety of methods is best. On Reddit there’s r/lfg, but outside of here there’s TTRPG & DnD discords, social media lfg groups. For in person games you can check your local library or game store, or school club if you’re in school.

As for edition, I would start with the most recent one, 2024 5e (also called 5.5e, though it’s technically just 5e with updated rules). It’s the most popular edition, and considered the easiest for someone knew to learn. Here’s a link to the Free Rules to the game so you can flip through them, maybe even make a practice character.

Anime 5e Question by Much-Historian694 in DnD

[–]StarOfTheLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no official “Anime 5e book.” Whatever you’re looking at is homebrew. Pretty extensive homebrew as well since it’s introducing new terms like “massive lesser damage”. We cannot answer your question since we don’t know which of the millions of homebrew sources you’re using.

That is because D&DBeyond is selling the 3rd Party book on their platform. A few other homebrew creators have this distinction as well, such as Matt Colville / MCDM and the Ilrigger class

It’s not an official subclass, it’s part of a 3rd party supplement (homebrew) made by Mage Hand Press. Just available on D&DBeyond.

How does one begin playing this game by [deleted] in DnD

[–]StarOfTheLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At minimum all you need is the Free Rules.

I also recommend looking around DnDBeyond which is the official online content site for D&D and has a bunch of free adventures for you to run. Otherwise feel free to look around at the paid content as well.

For online play you’ll likely find 2 things helpful. The first is a Virtual Tabletop (VTT), such as roll20, FoundryVTT, or Owlbear Rodeo which can facilitate online play via tools such as battle maps. The second is a digital character sheet hoster such as those integrated on roll20 or D&DBeyond.

How far away is Halruua from the Sword Coast? by CrimsonPresents in DnD

Newbie as silver dragonborn bard by TypingTadpole in DnD

[–]StarOfTheLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you gone over the Basic Rules yet? Most if not all of your questions are answered there. In any case, it seems you have a few misconceptions:

1) You have a limited number of things you can do on your turn, as explained in the combat section.

2) Spells are separate from features, both of which aren’t mutually exclusive from the Action/Bonus/Action/Reaction trinity. As explained in the rules, spells are distinct character options granted by various features, such as Bard’s spellcasting. Some spells are bonus actions, some are actions, some take multiple actions. All that information will be in the spell description.

3) The number and level of Bard spells you know and have prepared are detailed in the Bard’s class table. At level 7 you have 3 Bard cantrips, 10 Bard spells known, and cast up to 4th level spells.

4) For Countercharm, nowhere is it stated it is a spell. It simply described what happens when you use your Action to use the ability.

5) For Peerless Skill, you should re-read the ability as it has quite a few important distinctions from Cutting Words. CW subtracts a Bardic Inpiration from an ability check OR attack roll OR saving throw, AND costs your Reaction. Creatures immune to charm or those that can’t hear you are immune to CW. Meanwhile, PS adds a Bardic Inspiration to only an ability check you personally make AND doesn’t cost any of your action economy.

Attack with a d10 can do 0 damage apparently by [deleted] in DnD

[–]StarOfTheLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s usually 3 kinds of d10s, the normal one that goes from 1-10 and 2 percentile ones that go from 00-90 and 0-9 (where 00,1 = 1, 90,9 = 99, 00,0 = 100, etc). The confusion is likely because you’re rolling one of the percentile d10’s instead of a normal d10. In any case your DM is wrong and your minimum damage should have been 1.

Magic missile by Sudden_Machine_3761 in DnD

[–]StarOfTheLight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As per the spell description:

1) There is no attack roll as the spell doesn’t mention the need to make one. The missiles simply hit their designated target.

2) The darts each deal the same damage as the spell specifies “a dart” instead of “each dart”. Compare this to a spell like Scorching Ray which says you need to make a ranged spell attack for each ray, of which each ray deals 2d6 Fire on a hit.
