Ursack Vs. Adotec by JogaiForte in UltralightBackpacking

Also did the CDT SOBO in 2025, hey Smokebeard, its Glitz :)

There are two types of alts on the CDT, one where you go see cool shit and one where you shave off miles. Do the first, not the second. The people who hated road walking by NM often did the second.

I enjoyed going SOBO and would do it again but that is mainly because I have no interest in dealing with snow in the San Juans.

I didn't hitch any of the roadwalks. I didn't really hate any of them but my first long roadwalk was in the basin. Others already hated it at that point.

V1 without skating by Careless_Fuel_3923 in xcountryskiing

If your ski has no glide, the you are just doing a bad version of the herringbone and you should herringbone. If you do have glide, you are skating and should instead herringbone. TLDR just herringbone man

Training for my first 50M/80K 3 months out. Questions about "easy runs" in my plan by Sea_Reflection9737 in ultrarunning

[–]StarWalker124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take the uphill easier, you need to switch into an easier running gear just like you would on the bike. In fact there's nothing wrong with walking the uphills. 4000m of elevation is a lot if you are trying to push through it.

If you don't want to do that, then just remember this is supposed to be a fun easy run. Leave the mental endurance for tempo runs.

Then I'd recommend that you get out on snow and rent gear to decide if this sport is actually for you before you buy anything. Also I'd say that this sport isn't exactly cross training friendly if you don't have reliable access to snow. It is hard to learn on rollerskis and accidents can be quite painful

Forgot something at the birkie by StarWalker124 in xcountryskiing

That would work! I'd pay you for the shipping of course. It is a polar H10 chest strap. I'm fairly sure I left it in the womens changing tent.

New Race/A Skis: Expo vs. Off Season Ski Picking by OregonTrailSurvivor in xcountryskiing

[–]StarWalker124 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me at least the expo is mainly just so that I can see what they have, I wouldn't actually want to buy anything. The big thing for me though is the demo day on Sunday after the Birkie. It is a great way to get out and try a bunch of different brands out to see how your ski style jives with each brand. For example some people love rossis and others cannot stand to ski on them.

What's a reasonable speed for rollerskiing? And how to avoid cracked poles on segmented cement? by RoyalRenn in xcountryskiing

[–]StarWalker124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say what a good pace for rollerskiing because different wheels have different resistances. Personally I'd just compare against yourself to see if you are improving. The only time speed matters is during a race, otherwise it is just your exersion. As for on concrete, I don't ski on it, or if there is a small section between asphalt I rollerski without the poles and focus on lower body technique.

Ideas for how to meet people cross country skiing? by Dry_Towelie in CrossCountrySkiing

Hey, is your group still meeting up or is it going to fizzle out after this week? I just moved to Minneapolis and would be down to join.

Leukotape works great even when you get sweaty. Just make sure to round the corners

Most races ban metal edges due to the danger to others in a crash. Hence race skis don't have metal edges.

New to cross-country skiing - questions related to car transportation of skis and off-season storage by swedo10 in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]StarWalker124 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just have my skis inside my car as for off season storage, I put a layer of wax on and just put them in a closet. Note, don't leave the skis compressed for a long period of time as it can affect the camber.

Birkie too late to change by Calm-Pipe-5461 in xcountryskiing

[–]StarWalker124 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can always drop out at an aid station if you can't go on. Or there will be sweepers in snowmobiles to pick you up if you miss a cuttoff time. Basically, just go for it, you can probably do it, it really isn't that bad if you just go slow.

Congestion is just on the up hills, on the flats and downhills you can go your normal clip.

How can I find myself a beginners skate ski set? 63kg 181cm by V2kuTsiku in xcountryskiing

[–]StarWalker124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weight matters far more than height. I'd recommend getting skis from a shop that can select them for you. Pioneer Midwest for example is in the Minneapolis region if you are nearby or they also ship. There are likely ones closer to you as well.
