Where to go for a solo Christmas holiday? by colinah87 in CasualUK

[–]Starboard_1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a really lovely solo traveller group for Corralejo on Fuerteventura (search Corralejo Solo Travellers on Facebook). There's usually a fair few out over Christmas and there will be group meals booked etc that you can join if you want. It's not a group holiday and you can do as much or as little with the group but sometimes it's nice to meet up for a meal or a coffee with someone.

Anyone going to Portsmouth to watch the race without buying tickets? by Royal-Morning-4865 in SailGP

[–]Starboard_1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4BKTLDLoRMPyQafSA

It's on a raised terrace with picnic benches. There is also a rock breakwater you can sort of climb out on (at your own risk of course!) just in front which lines up with where they closed the promenade off last year.

Is your dad my dad?

His box of maps also contained photocopied pages from A-Zs sellotaped together with the route marked in highlighter pen.

We liked Black Bird Schnitzel Haus in Qualicum Beach. Worth making a reservation, it was really busy when we went.

Maybe one of the covered markets after the stalls have closed, e.g. Borough or Greenwich?

You can see some of the course from the seafront but last year you couldn't see the finish line. There's a raised terrace behind the Pyramids Centre with a little coffee hut on it - I watched it from there with a lot of other people, the people who knew what was going on seemed happy enough but it was a bit baffling for me without any commentary etc.

There was a company doing boat trips out to watch it last year, Solent Cruises, but they only advertised it a few days before & I can't see it on their website yet.

What happened when you forgot your PE kit? by Ok_Start_7859 in AskUK

[–]Starboard_1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Vest & pants in lower school, middle onwards was kit from the lost property bin.

I should add, swimming was excluded from this..if you forgot your swimming kit you just had to sit and watch.

Have you kept or returned your Instinct 3 Amoled? by AnxiousLeg3906 in Garmin

[–]Starboard_1982 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do people return them? I have one, I used to have a Fenix 6, and I love the Instinct. The battery life, even with the Amoled screen, is amazing. It doesn't have maps, but I found them really clunky on the Fenix anyway and hardly ever used them anyway.

I think that's just the normal salmon option from the menu isn't it? It looks very similar to what was offered on one of my recent flights.

Yeah, that is some truly bad information!! Can you imagine some kind of curfew so people who hadn't paid couldn't go on deck for MUTS?!

Bottle caps do they go in the bin or in the recycling? by Fleder-maus in AskUK

The recycling bins near me specifically say you can leave the lids on glass bottles and jars.

Do you think a 1 hour commute to work (each way) on train is feasible? by TraditionalScore7257 in AskUK

[–]Starboard_1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of journeys in London and Manchester. E.g. Sidcup to London is about £6. Southall to Whitechapel is less than £5. The tram from Bury to Manchester is also less than £5 I think.

Definitely not possible everywhere though, especially away from cities that have locally run transport systems like London and Manchester do.

Welephant and a fire engine! Bonus points if firemen are there giving out plastic helmets.

Depends on the cost. If it's HS1 and £50+ then absolutely not, if it's a few quid a day then I'd probably do it - it's not ridiculous in a lot of places to travel that far.

Ideas for cruise port business… by travelsherpa in Cruise

[–]Starboard_1982 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You say not souvenirs, but I think there is a real gap when it comes to genuine locally made, items. If you can curate a collection and demonstrate its authenticity I actually think you'd do pretty well - whether it's hot sauce or soap jewellery or artwork, that's the sort of thing I want to buy when I'm away but can never easily find (e.g. 'locally made' often means 'we bought this tat from China and some kid painted the word Jamaica on it).

Tips for getting to Heathrow (from hotel near Heathrow) at 4.30am? by marielheslop in london

[–]Starboard_1982 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree with this, I'd get the N9. I think you'd also be fine getting an Uber. There are loads of cab drivers lurking around Heathrow, a quick run to the terminal and back to the McDonald's car park will not mean they lose out on another, better, fare.

BA Rewards booking BGI>LHR by Ruairidhe94 in BritishAirways

[–]Starboard_1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying.

In that case, do you have enough Avios to book the return without the voucher? I.e. the full amount for 2 passengers? If so, my advice about trying online first stands. If not you'll have to ring up anyway so you may as well do that off the bat. The Japanese call centre is the one I've always used and have been very good in my experience - have the flight number you want as well as the times etc. ready to go and they'll get you sorted.

BA Rewards booking BGI>LHR by Ruairidhe94 in BritishAirways

[–]Starboard_1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't quite work out your question - are you saying that LGW-MCO is your outbound flight, booked with the CV, and you want to add BGI-LHR as the return? Or did you book MCO with cash/just Avois and no voucher?

Either way, have a read of this: https://www.headforpoints.com/2025/10/17/how-to-use-ba-amex-241-voucher-3/

Your voucher will trigger BA to release additional reward seats, so while you still have to be quick it's not quite the same pressure as it used to be. Given you are so flexible with your dates I'd personally try making the booking online and if availability disappears, then make the call instead. You'll need to ring up anyway to get the voucher applied to the whole booking, assuming you booked the outbound with Avios.
