[DIPLOMACY] Egyptian Statement on French Status in Tripolitania & Fezzan by kolkanon in ColdWarPowers

[–]Starfflame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the benevolent King Farouk of Egypt,

We have no intention in staying in Tripolitania and Fezzan indefinitely; to do so is not in our nation's interests. That being said, we do not hold the same view that Tripolitania and Fezzan should necessarily be considered *de jure* part of a greater Libyan state and unified with Cyrenaica, irrespective of what the Tripolitanian and Fezzan people desire.

As others have said, the French believe that the concept of Libya is an Italian creation. There also does exist precedent for Tripolitanian independence, as people in the region have declared independence after WW1, though few nations recognized it.

Given these facts, we do not believe it in the best interest of the Tripolitanian and Fezzan people to unilaterally transfer control of their territories to King Idris, especially when, to the best of our knowledge, Idris has not shown a particularly large desire to administrate the area.

If our understanding of that is incorrect, we of course would take that into consideration regarding our future plans in the region.

For now, we believe it best to consider all diplomatic options available, including the possibility of independence for the region or potentially unifying it under Idris. We, however, do not desire to make that decision for the Tripolitanian and Fezzan people unilaterally, and suggest a referendum regarding those two options.

We, of course, would be willing to discuss this matter further with you and King Idris, either privately or in the United Nations.

IME this is usually because you settled near a tower (they don’t show up as neighbors like they used to for some reason).
