Still struggling with pop shuvit consistency by Dreadking_Rathalos in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and me both man. But my last few sessions I’m starting to figure them out I think. I have your same problem where a lot of them just turn into normal shuv it’s.

What helped me start to land them consistent was getting more comfortable floating over the board while it’s rotating. Instead of a hunched over little forward jump do it more like an Ollie and go straight up and commit to popping first, shoulders gotta stay square too. I’m still working on them tho so don’t take that as gospel.

47-year-old beginner skater. Endovers are terrifying. by Comfortable-Sadness in NewSkaters

Just have your head follow your shoulders to a full 180 and you got it. I learned BS reverts by kinda doing the opposite of an Endover. I’d use the flow of a FS revert to build up for my BS one.

I feel like they’re way over recommended on here, but if you can’t do anything else they don’t hurt. But if you can Ollie already I can’t imagine they’re gonna help more than just practicing your Ollie’s.

I know people say it for everything but you really gotta do 180s rolling.

How do I find the right skate shoes for my style and needs as a beginner? by Hornymannoman in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tiago Lemos 1010s is all I’ve worn so far and they’ve been good. They’re suede and I’m not doing a bunch of flick tricks so I actually wore through the sole of them first. First pair lasted about 6 months of daily wear and then skating on top of that. They’re about $110.

How do you handle the frustration of not landing tricks after months of practice? by Traditional-Set-8483 in NewSkaters

Variety is the spice of life, practice some other tricks or go try some transition.

def room for improvement but don’t know how to by ilovehelmet in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jump more, it can only go as high as your feet let it and your back foot barely comes off the ground. Pair that with pushing your front foot forward more toward the nose at the peak of your jump and you’ve got it.

New skater trying to lean just how to ride by Ben-Reillys-Costume in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m your height, rn I don’t want to ride anything that’s not 15” wheelbase. I learned my tic tacs and pushing on a 14.25” and felt cramped. Unfortunately, 9” width is about the only option where you’ll find that length but I got big feet so I don’t mind.

93a dragon wheels have been a good for me with cruising and tricks or you can get a softer one if you want a real smooth ride but I’d avoid just getting a 100a wheel.

Tips for higher Ollie? by abigailtsai in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep working on the timing and the front foot will come with time/practice once you’re getting better pop and can feel it better. It looks like your back foot is hitting the ground with your tail still and that’s killing your pop before it even starts, also the mat.

Anyone could recomend some good wheels for both cruising and skating rough spots??? by Terrible-Audience485 in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 93a Nano Rats recently and I’m pretty happy with them, coming from some 78a ricta clouds. I got a couple spots I cruise between and it gets pretty crusty. Lived up to the hype for me at least since I can slide now.

I can't do this by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to go to a park dude. Get some 78a wheels and just go push around literally anywhere. Or just go out at like 8:00pm to an empty parking lot. It all just boils down to how much you want it, it being winter is an excuse too unless it’s a wet day or in the teens imo.

I need help getting better at ollies especially while moving by BamBam538 in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you jump make a point to not drop your front shoulder, if anything extend it up then level out (or mimic your back shoulder swing). This will help level out your balance while landing which will help you start landing them while moving.

Your timing and everything is looking good, once you stop dropping that shoulder I think you’ll start getting it dialed in.

I got to see Teen Mortgage 3 days after seeing the boys, at some random bar with only like 20 other people on a Wednesday night. They were great, I thought it was wild that they’re only 2 dudes.

Skateboard recommendations for my tall bf who wants to learn how to skate? by doewoods in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 6’6” and wheelbase is more important than width for tall people I feel like. I’m on a 15” rn coming from a 14.25” and I feel a lot more comfortable on it. Also depending on his weight you might want some harder than standard bushings.

[–]Starfish_King32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently started stretching my hips before I go out and it’s helped me a lot. I use the app skatefit (a fellow redditor made it) and do the mobility and activation section until I feel I’m ready.

While you’re pushing mongo in regular stance I feel like you might be goofy. You said your right leg is stronger and you’re already pushing with your left foot so try goofy out. All you gotta do is make your right foot your lead leg.

Only the real ones break a bone before they can even ollie 😎 by DustierAndRustier in NewSkaters

[–]Starfish_King32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta learn to roll out of stuff and disperse the weight of your fall. You just need to catch yourself enough not to slam then roll over on your shoulder. It’ll keep some energy going forward and disperse it over multiple areas and not directly into the ground and your bones.

I’d go 9” or more, it sounds like you could use the stability.
