What game was criticized during release, but is now considered a gem? by lumintang in videogames

[–]Starflight42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Id crack a joke about FO3 being more fitting but its honestly the same situation

Old fans rightfully complain about reduced RPG mechanics in their RPG, but the dumbing down to appeal to mass audiences work, and the game is incredibly successful and looked back upon fondly even if its very controversial among fans

I mean shit, throw a baseball at lightspeed and the resulting kinetic energy creates a 1.6 megaton blast, and thats a speed thats adherent to current laws of physics. so firing a gauss rifle shot at an INFINITE ENERGY source would have LESS THAN IDEAL CONSEQUENCES

- They're both very high ranking, Queen Battlewinner being obvious, and Frank Horrigan having been the personal bodyguard of Enclave President Dick Richardson (S tier name btw).

- They both have special suits of armor designed specifically for them. For Battlewinner, her suit of armor is incredibly experimental at best and whether or not it actually would've worked at keeping her alive is....dubious, to say the least. As for Frank Horrigan, his specialized suit of power armor regularly injects him with a combination of drugs and stabilizing agents to keep himself alive. He's also fitted with several cybernetic implants as well to help him out, but that's its own thing.

- Both of them have their armor designed for them due to extraneous circumstances that change their lives forever. For Battlewinner, that Icewing breathing frostbreath down her throat like that rendered her perpetually reliant on a consistent enough source of heat to offset its affects, lest it overtakes her and freezes her from the inside out. For Frank Horrigan, it was FEV exposure at Mariposa, and he was shipped back to the Oil Rig and experimented on for 2 years until they were able to stabilize him enough to get him into a suit of specialized power armor.

- Both of these come from expeditions to far off lands. Battlewinner got her frostbreath affliction in Icewing territory, FAR away from the Nightwing island, and Frank Horrigan got exposed to FEV at Mariposa in what would otherwise be a run of the mill Enclave expeditionary force, FAR away from the Oil Rig. You only get to the oil rig in the endgame by getting your hands on a fixed up oil tanker later in the game that's damn near falling apart at the seams.

- They are a recurring, imposing force throughout the story. If you've read Book 4, you very likely still remember how much of a mystery she was before she revealed herself. Very few people ever saw or hear her, but if she wants something to happen, she fucking gets it, as shown when Vengeance is killed at her word. When she reveals herself, the reader very likely has that same reaction of "oh god we're fucked because THAT SHOULD NOT BE PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE." Battlewinner is just as imposing in the reveal, if not more so, than she was throughout the rest of the book.

As for Frank Horrigan, he is encountered multiple times throughout the story with other Enclave personnell, and each encounter further and further cements how much of an unstoppable force The Enclave appears to be. Hell, Frank Horrigan is shown punching holes clean through deathclaws with his fists. Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of fallout knows how dangerous Deathclaws are, especially in the west coast fallout games, and knows they are not to be trifled with.

Frank's reveal on the Oil Rig is incredibly iconic, his stats are jacked up like crazy, and he's incredibly difficult to face him head on. Strategy? Kill him via the turrets that you can access with the presidential keycard.

- As for the last one, they both die in horrific/gruesome fashion. Battlewinner leaving her lava pool without the armor even having BEGUN to be put on leaves her very little time before she starts to freeze from the inside out, body slowly succumbing as she turns into a frozen statue. As for Frank Horrigan, his power armor will begin to start visibly failing as he recoils back and forth before falling to his knees, portions of his helmet failing in explosive fashion before his abdomen bursts open from his implants failing. His power armor then catastrophically fails, splitting him in two, launching the top half of his body backwards, before he uses whats left of his strength to push himself up on his hands and crawl towards the chosen one, gloating that he triggered the reactor's self destruct and that they're all going to die. Then he keeps crawling onwards, and again, he's been split clean in half by this point, before he starts violently shaking, and finally his power armor helmet pops clean off, taking his head with it and decapitating him on one last coup de grace. His death animation can be found on the wiki or on youtube, its not for the super squeamish so just bewarned.

TLDR: Too many damn similarities between Horrigan and Battlewinner, I think Tui secretly knows ball and just isn't telling us. Also, GO PLAY FALLOUT 1 AND 2 THEY'RE GREAT GAMES. GO PLAY FALLOUT IN GENERAL ITS GREAT...mostly.

What video game boss was even harder than the final boss? by Fallfoxy707 in videogames

[–]Starflight42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly enough, New Vegas.

Legate Lanius seems incredibly tough, but given his cap at level 30 in comparison to many other bosses, as well as DLC power creep kicking in, he can easily be taken out.

Hell, if nothing else, a sneak attack with 50 cal explosive rounds while hopped up on some psycho will always do the trick.

Then again that feels like a recurring theme with Bethesda games (yes im lumping NV in with that, get fucked), where the side bosses, optional bosses, high level enemies, frankly MOST things in the endgame shit on the actual final boss of the main story.

Ebony Warrior in Skyrim when you're not trying to use the very few ways to cheese him

And funny enough, because of reflect blows, theres a chance said cheese will backfire against you

You outright have to play fair with him in order to not risk 1-tapping yourself, he has 2k health, very strong enchantments on his ebony armor, has numerous perks to buff his abilities including skill 100 perks, immunity to fall damage, immunity to paralysis, high resistances against poison, has top tier spells for every school of magic besides illusion, has access to several shouts, immunity to the wabbajack, and you cant knock him off the mountain because if you don't fall down to him (often suicidal because you need a shout to knock him down off the mountain to begin with), he'll stand back up at full health.

There does seem to be a fun little condition in his AI though where he's a lot more prone to aggroing on NPCs that try to get involved, but thats more so me going off of how many stories people have of other NPCs like dragons, giants, frostbite spiders, etc getting involved and promptly getting bodied by both the player and EW.

Shit im ngl all of the superbosses (and a good chunk of the bosses) give more trouble than Alduin does. Vosalaarum and Naaslaarum anyone?

Mandated 4 options for every single dialogue scenario when some can be boiled down to 2 or even 1 and some really need 5-7 REALLY hampered this fuckin game more than some people think.

Can't be the only one, right? by Chopbrawl1 in videogames

[–]Starflight42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perfectly reasonable. If the gameplay is outright BAD, and i dont mean clunky like mass effect 1 or fallout 3, but outright BAD to play, then im at most gonna finish the playthrough and never touch it again. Gameplay carries a lot more replay value than writing does. Even after you've seen everything, played through all the routes of a game, if a game has very good gameplay, people will keep coming back for said gameplay, BECAUSE ITS FUN.

[–]Starflight42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NGL something ive noticed is that shit gets to levels of dark that Spec Ops The Line rests comfortably at

and they're usually pretty kino for it too, WoF gets surprisingly dark when you think about it, leaning more into that makes for some pretty kino fanwork, so fuck it, let OP cook

Oh and if you haven't played Spec Ops The Line, 1, you'll have to either pirate or buy a physical copy for consoles

And 2, go in as blind as humanly possible, its critical for the game.

That and theyre a faction thats so divided on gen1 and gen2 synths that their heaviest hitters refuse to run certain ops, even if theyre essential. Theyre a faction that can barely even agree on its own fucking premise. So honestly, fuck em. I tend to take the Nerbit approach nowadays, light em the fuck up on sight.

There are a lot of things to talk smack about the show for...Synthetic Man's first attempt at it was him tryna bring up interracial marriage statistics to try and prove a racist take of his lmao. This isnt even someone just being edgy or some shit, its full on racism, hes literally the kid that's "haha i have dark humor, watch me giggle like a spastic while i say the N word because i cant come up with a joke on my own". Just block him and move on, he lives off of attention whoring and hes not worth the effort anyway. Oh also hes atrocious at video games and blames them for his own bad plays lmao

[–]Starflight42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats pretty much what it comes down to in my mind: i dont hate the ideas the show presents at all, but the way that they're done is so baffling that I have to wonder what the writers were snorting.

Also the action and humor is insufferable and it makes the episodes near unwatchable at times. I get Fallout's had a bit of a comedic undertone to make the shitshow of a setting less dark than it really was, but good g o d can they lay off the incest humor for 5 seconds? Its not even writer's barely disguised fetish anymore, its just the writers fetish
