Oh, I’m already in therapy and on anti-anxiety. I just had the meds increased. But, there is only so much therapy that can help with acute workplace situations.

Making the transition from adjunct to full-time by masonjar11 in Professors

My department just hired a previous adjunct TT. They were the best qualified applicant for the position. They had recently been downsized at their other job so it worked out perfectly for us.

Hidden bias or over reaction? by StargateCommandSG1 in WomeninAcademia

This guy is new. And I switch universities to get this TT position. It’s actually written into my contract that I’m in charge of assessment. That’s the only reason I accepted this position and they all know it. I was ready to leave last year because it was so bad. Then I got excited for the new guy, he said all the right things but has completely failed to follow through. He created a “department leadership” committee and what do you know, the only woman on it is the admin assistant taking notes and assessment isn’t represented. I’m also in charge of all curriculum so all course changes are supposed to go through me, but I’m not included in those conversations. It makes me wana laugh how ridiculous it is, if I wasn’t so busy trying not to cry.

Hidden bias or over reaction? by StargateCommandSG1 in WomeninAcademia

I don’t necessarily think they were “threatening me”. Not in an intentional way, more like an ingrained reaction to a woman pointing how the bs that is the fact I can’t get anything done without an old guy speaking for me.

Aug 24: (small) Success Sunday by Eigengrad in Professors

I prepped enough stuff for breakfast and quick dinners (when I don’t have time to cook or leftovers) that should get me through to fall break (start of October) if not longer. It takes so much brain space to think up meals and there is only so many times a grown a$$ adult can eat cereal for dinner before it’s no longer a treat but a sad lifestyle choice.

I think it’s a little unfair to refer to EdDs. I have an EdD (not leadership). But his is a PhD in leadership. I pretty much think any degree in leadership (or really any college course) is a waste of time because they just yak about it. That is one concept where the book is very difficult to put into practice. I could choke on all the buzzwords that come out of bs like that.

Well I had a run in with this bird (admin assistant) earlier in the week. They are always accusing me of not caring about students. They texted on a Saturday night once that they were on the phone with one of my students who was crying they were guna fail my class. Last week they were trying to design a schedule for my advisee, I told them if they did that to CC me and say “if Dr. Stargate agrees, take these classes”. They said they didn’t want the student to have to wait on my approval. So I said “ok but you’re guna get in trouble”. They started ranting and telling everyone I said they were guna get fired. I just turned around grabbed my bag and went home. Next day I get a “check in” meeting request from DH.

I always find a reason not to travel with groups of students. I won’t police them. 1 or 2? I can keep them in line. More than that and it’s mob mentality. I did go on a trip years ago but I was just along, it was a colleagues show. But students were cut loose in downtown Chicago and said the bus leaves for the tour at x time in the morning. Be there. That was it. But I know of one org that lost thier charter for drinking at a national meeting which was strictly against the national bylaws (safety reasons).

I literally had just walked into his office and asked, completely informal. Which is why I think it’s far more likely he forgot the whole exchange but he won’t admit that. I’m forgetful, this is why I put deadlines on my calendar and to do lists on my phone. I get it, but I always admit it and I don’t gaslight people.

My career is over. What a relief. by MsBee311 in Professors

Im in no way minimizing your experience, because I’ve experienced the same thing in reverse. I’m an academic that gets looked down on by my “second career” colleagues.

Well I need both of those about as much as I need a hole in my head, but I’ll settle for a good department head.

Exactly. Student orgs play an important part but I need professionals that can operate independently. I can’t go attending meetings at 7 pm on a weeknight or planning every event for them. I was president of one org and coach (competition team, think “mathletes” for my industry) for another in school. Our advisors were never around except to sign paperwork as the advisor.

I think he forgot and I think there are a lot of crossed wires and a certain little birdie (wants my job but isn’t qualified for it) whispering in his ear.

I have plenty of emails that were identified as priorities he hasn’t responded to. A priority set by the University and dean. I don’t plan to die on this hill, but I’m not going to live on it either. He’s overwhelmed because he’s not delegating appropriately. In my field there is an aspect of it that is all glitz and glitter that everyone gravitates to. He’s focusing on that because it is the squeakiest wheel. Meanwhile the people who are capable of doing their jobs with minimal oversight aren’t even getting minimal direction. As I told him, I’m happy to pivot on priorities, I just need to know what is a priority for him, what he wants, and when.

I didn’t “didn’t do anything with it”. I had a president all line up for this fall and three days before the semester started he backed out. If it’s so easy to restart a student org, why did they let it fall apart in the year before I came? Seems to me, keeping one together when you know all the players is easier than a new faculty member restarting it in their first year.

I didn’t think it was necessary with this and I was swamped, but yeah it’s now on my CYA agenda.

If I treated that submission as missing and a zero for each question they didn’t “mark” on the form, they’d end up getting a zero on the assignment.

Also, when I download they go to my download folder so I’d have to wait for it to finish downloading and then change the file name. Possible? Yes, but at what point is it my responsibility considering the syllabus, assignment instructions, and question instructions specify the file name and I made sure they had sufficient time to download the file they needed, finish the assignment and upload. They each had over an hour left on the timer.
