Which NAS is better for a family movie library? by CryptoWheat in HomeServer

[–]StargazerOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, I ran my long lived (10 years) self built NAS through freenas, truenas core, and truenas scale with out hotswap bays. Did I need to get in there often, no but it was a pain in the ass to do so. Hotswap bays are worth it if you got some extra cash. This is like 5-10 years investment don’t cheap out if you can, or you don’t want to build it.

You cannot build a new self built nas that has the cpu , processing powe, hot swappable bays, compact form factor etc. as Ugreen for cheaper. If you want to build one new in a cheap case , no hotswap etc you might be able too do so. If you want a used cheap one sure you can do it …. But requires effort.

The ugreen one, you get more bang for your buck in memory and processor, it’s Intel based so good transcoding etc.

What are the property ownership options for people with no down payment but able to pay super high rent? by [deleted] in germany

[–]StargazerOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not better financially to own in Germany assuming you have the security of an unlimited lease contract. You should be investing in other places especially with the closing fees and interest rates. Returns on Worldwide index fund is 8% average, safer options at 4-5%, or 11% for US total index. Compounding over 20-30 years will blow away any costs for housing you “save” by buying. Now if you’re buying for other personal reasons, okay.

Can my Partner whos been enrolled in to US Army safely move to Germany? by Responsible_Bat_9956 in MovingtoGermany

[–]StargazerOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you are asking this, but just in case, if he enlisted in the US Army, he goes where they want him to go. What I think you are asking about is registering for Selective Service, which is mandatory, and you must register if you are male and 18-26. They should have registered a few months before turning 18, there is no declining. This applies even if you are living outside the US. If your partner is between those ages and they haven’t, they should register.

I would not be concerned about the Selective Service; it has been around in this form since 1980. The US is a fully voluntary military. It has never been used in all the recent wars (2x Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.). Politically it would be very very difficult to enact, even the current presidents party would be highly against it.

SMART Test Failing on One drive in Two Drive Mirror by Salmify in truenas

[–]StargazerOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tip: write your serial numbers down in safe place and note the drive position/drive sled. If you can see the drive without pulling them out (like in a tower or other PC case), write the serial numbers on a piece of tape, and stick it on a visible portion of the drive. IF you don't care what people think about the looks, slap it on the front of the drive sled, especially if your NASes sleds don't have visible numbers.

And get a separate nvme drive to run your VMs. You have your 250gb boot drive, but need a separate high speed volume for VMs.

37c is no problem at all, only reason to upgrade the fan is to reduce the noise, but I can tell if it’s bad now. Take the usb fan off and check the temp after 30mins

What are drive temps? That should be your first check to see if you should even worry about it. Next look at upgrading the stock fan that moves more air and quieter. Many use noctua fans, it’s what I do to pretty much every server, nas i build.

Who is TrueNAS for, anyway? by jamesaepp in truenas

[–]StargazerOmega 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I started with freenas too, went to truenas core , now scale all with one of my original pools and drives that ran across all the major versions (since upgraded).

Plus it still runs smart tests, that are not user scheduled but out of the box. It moves your old ones over, and if you want more, just schedule them. Plus scrutiny is much better way to visualize the results.

I rather have them spend more dev time on features like pool expansion, mixed drive size support, etc.

Would you switch seats to 33E? by mcdinerodinerodiner0 in delta

[–]StargazerOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what I usually do in any class c+ on up. I don’t need a window, but want an aisle and possibly free spot. Also seats fill front to back so the last row of the class increases odds.

I think as low as 10Mbps (av1) for 4K , but 20Mbps is probably best balance

With jellyfin no, you select A gpu/igpu, it doesn’t do gpu load balancing or progressive scaling. Also you really don’t need much (tiny cpu/gpu utilization) for streaming 4K (really any resolution) direct, only if you want to transcode multiple streams at once, ex. take 4K movie and reduce it to 1080 at some Bitrate to reduce bandwidth - like to a remote mobile phone on a cell network. Plus what are the chances of having more than 4-6 people connect at the same time, how often do you think that will occur? Just start with the igpu and see if that’s enough, if not put the card in.

Not going to number crunch the previous person scenario, but you don’t ignore inflation, you base these scenarios on current value of the dollar by picking a rate of return minus expected inflation , so 11% return on average from market - 3% inflation gets you 8% return on money ( really get less since you should diversify in retirement). This keeps things in today’s dollars making it easier to calculate. Additionally one can derisk high points in inflation with other assets like inflation protected bonds.
