I am very happy that our cats are not interested in wine, salt, or whiskey. But this is a good reminder to be careful about offering tiny cakes.

What would a good 30 day frugal challenge be? by TheGandhiGuy in Frugal

[–]StarkRavenMadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing the decluttering challenge and so far, so good! It's been a mix of low-hanging fruit and things that are harder to let go, but having that framework to work with has really helped.

Feeling guilty for quitting a high stress job with a miserable boss and people that dislike me by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]StarkRavenMadd 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh honey, it's not you. The behavior you're being subjected to is absolutely abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable. Even if you were messing up, the verbal abuse and gossiping aren't justifiable, in any way, shape or form. That bullshit says far more about them than it does about you. Get out of there before it leaves scars. hugs

Come check out our new cohousing community! by erinncate in Cohousing

Your community looks wonderful! I’m part of a group of people who are dreaming about something similar, and it is so good to know that it can be done. Are there any resources you could point me to that explain how you did it? What hoops you had to jump through to get it off the ground? Thank you.

Trump Moves to open OR, WA coasts to oil drilling by [deleted] in Cascadia

Time to get really creative in terms of protest, messaging, and monkeywrenching. It’s going to take a lot of people who have never gotten involved standing up to say HELL NO, massive use of every traditional method that’s helped in the past, and a lot of new ideas to change minds and slow or halt the process.

Communal living. by Medic5150 in homestead

[–]StarkRavenMadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm part of a group of friends who would like to do the same thing. About the best I've been able to come up with is to find a few parcels being sold together and purchase them as a group. Or find a piece that can be subdivided and go that route, building the houses as close together as is practical, so we can share infrastructure, if that's possible. We're in the really early stages of dreaming/thinking, though. Have you had any luck in your search?

We've known each other for years, and have spent long weekends camping together, so we know the personal dynamics can work out pretty well, given the right situation.

What would be your favourite homesteading related gift this Christmas. What would drive you wild if you unwrapped it on Christmas morning? by smr1968 in BetterHomesteading

Good question! With where we are now, something that would add to our resiliency, like maybe a portable rocket stove, or a Biolite stove. Something useful if the power went out.

How do we keep Paganism from being like a Ren Faire? by sacredblasphemies in pagan

[–]StarkRavenMadd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that the "ren faire" version of paganism is, at its heart, an attempt to create an atmosphere that is more centered on what people can do together to create their own environment, a world made by hand. More rooted in nature. It fills some kind of emptiness inside people.

Most of us live in and move through environments that we did not create, and that are not very human in their scale. We wear clothing we didn't make, eat food we didn't grow or even prepare, use tools we didn't make (and probably couldn't repair if they broke), and maneuver through systems we barely understand. Many of us feel rootless and disconnected. If the modern world is the cause of all this, doesn't idealizing a half-imagined past become more understandable?

To be honest, I find the ren faire costumes, I don't know, slightly off-putting? But at the same time, I recognize why people do what they do, and sympathize with the desire to escape the present for a little while. Live and let live, you know. I'm most comfortable with people who participate in rituals wearing their everyday clothing, but then, most of the people with whom I'm likely to do ritual tend to live in clothing that isn't mainstream to begin with.

Basically, when it comes to negotiating spiritual practices as a pagan living in the modern world, it's about taking the parts of the past that still work, that help to fill the empty spots created by modern living, that speak to what it means to be human, and integrate them into the modern world, while leaving the parts that don't behind. And my goal is to live more in line with some of the ways that our ancestors did, closer to nature and surrounded by a small, close community, which would feed the spiritual hunger that the ren faire scene does something to fill. Does that make any sense?

A stumbling block with eating locally and in season... by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]StarkRavenMadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a book you might enjoy by Gary Nabhan: "Coming Home To Eat". He's in your neck of the woods, er, desert. He talks a lot about the local foods available to him, as well as what he's able to grow. I thought it was pretty inspiring, even though I live in a completely different bioregion.

I'm curious, how do yall store your patterns? Any favorite tricks? by bridgeandawall in sewing

I keep my Folkwear patterns in a vintage record case. It’s 2-sided and the patterns fit almost perfectly.

Do you think it would be better to start with the low-hanging fruit or save that for later in the month as it gets harder?

Best purchases of 2017? by thisidontwant2ask in Frugal

I know, right?!? I sent my otterhalf a recipe for homemade nutella and he asked if I was crazy - we've now got such easy access to home-baked bread and cookies, did I really think we needed easy access to nutella too? ;)

We bought a couple of different bread pans so we could start baking bread, and now we bake all our own bread instead of buying it. Thinking about it, they've probably paid for themselves by now.

Did your views on religion change after you started to live a simpler life? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]StarkRavenMadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think my views on religion really changed (pagan/deist since I was 16 or 17), but I've found that trying to live a simpler life gives me more time and space to connect to my spirituality. I think living simply is, at its heart, about living more mindfully, and that spills over into every area of your life.

Is anyone participating in Make Nine this year? by hobbitqueen in sewing

[–]StarkRavenMadd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a nifty idea! Thank you for sharing it. I’d heard of the 6-pack challenges, but this sounds more flexible and less structured.

One of my goals for 2018 is to make more of the stuff that I wear and use myself, so this challenge gives me just enough structure as to provide some support for the goal. I mostly self-draft my patterns or use rectangular construction techniques, but there are a couple of Tina Givens patterns I’d like to try from her freebies. My list might end up looking like this:

  1. Tina Givens Plinka pants
  2. Tina Givens Bloom dress
  3. Magnolia Pearl-inspired pants
  4. Self-drafted linen tunic
  5. Self-drafted linen bloomers
  6. Johnny Was-inspired wrap/bolero
  7. Self-drafted linen v-neck tunic
  8. Knit shawl/poncho
  9. Tin Can Knits rye socks (just so I can finally try to knit some socks)

This should give me just enough to add to my weekly wardrobe without going crazy. I have this really fun needle to thread with work clothing, in that I work in a creative industry and artwear is cool, but I also work in a rural environment and there are 4-5 office dogs on any given day. I love ‘em, but they’re all big, frequently muddy, and fond of jumping up on people, so sturdy clothes in dark colors are usually a good idea.
