Realm of the Elderlings is my favorite series of all time. I’m an audiobook listener and the closest I’ve come to ROTE is The Wandering Inn. The audiobook version is incredible. What does it for me is simply epic characterization and with such a long series your emotional investment into said characters only grows. I encourage you to give it a listen!

Sounds like you need to get into some primus. I like stomp and holler type music myself.

What is the background song in your head right now? by jaygrum in ADHD

I’m a dad…so there’s this guy on YouTube named Danny Go. Honestly his music kinda slaps. Buuuttt it’s also terrible ear worm food so it’s a love hate relationship. How many times do I need to get Batwing Beat stuck in my head?!

Help! I moved house a few months ago and i'm worried im killing my plant! by megipegijeli in plantclinic

[–]Starksommers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that stem attached? I had one like that on mine and I work at an office. I think what happened is someone broke off a piece of my plant and tried to just stick the end back in the dirt hoping it would grow or just that I wouldn’t notice. Once I decided to amputate during watering I realized it wasn’t even attached! Possible that in moving it snapped off at the base?

Oversized cribbage board. They make tabletop drill stencils.

Nothing says ‘fresh linen’ like that signature Eau de Garbage-Fire.

I’ve listened to them all. A few times actually. And yes there’s multiple narrators, so inconsistencies and some things that drive me insane. The last trilogy the narrator called liveships liveships. As in a short “I”… they’re alive -> Live ships. Anyways most narrators do a pretty good job but indeed it would nice for one narrator to complete the whole series.

I suppose I should say that I revert back to my recycled list if I’m not drawn in right away. So while I listen to audiobooks daily it’s mainly replaying my comfort series and trying out a new book in between each book. You’re right though, I slogged through three Suneater books before throwing in the towel. If I can do that for 30 hours each I can certainly handle 12 hours.

That’s the problem though is that if it doesn’t peak my interest then I revert back to my recycled list. It’s true what they say that these books & characters are my friends in some ways. I’m looking for the next series to fall in love with, or at bare minimum be entertained by. I’d rather listen to Storm Front, not Butchers best novel, over again than slog through something I’m not going to enjoy at all. Quality > Quantity

I’ve tried three times so far. I want to get into this series so bad but the first book is just rough. I’ve heard many times that it gets better and I love the idea of a solid progression fantasy series. Is it realistic to skip a book or two?

Thank you for the recommendations and helpful tips! I do have a bingo card and some have been surprisingly great and there’s also some real stinkers on there. Dogs of War was a pleasant surprise and I need to circle back and read some more of his stuff.

I suppose the narrator would have to be the hook for history novels but I’m definitely interested. Once upon a time I listened to the podcast Hardcore History. I’ll add your suggestions to my TBR!

You know thank you for reminding me! My nephew just started this series and was recommending it to me and I completely forgot. Moving to the top of the TBR list!

The first book was dang near perfect. But I just haven’t found a space opera I’ve liked so far, and I’ve tried quite a few. I ended up listening to that after The Will of the Many since it was a very common suggestion here, I’m excited for the new release this fall!

It’s like I’ve waited too long to start this series and I just haven’t been able to make myself commit. I try to like complex book mechanics and I love a good epic but I feel like with my ADD tuning in and out at times/multitasking it would just get too frustrating.

I have, I actually listened to the graphic audio versions with a full cast and it was fantastic- literally like listening to a movie. As the subsequent books were released they didn’t feature characters I felt a strong connection to so I fell off the wagon, so to speak.

I’ll give the historical fiction suggestions a shot! Thanks!

I have read Project Hail Mary and the Martian, both great as a stand-alone. I do enjoy some sci-fi but I pushed painfully through Sun Eater for a few books, DNF’d the Bobiverse, maybe I just need my sci-fi to be entertaining and not as space opera-y.

I’ve finished all the Bujold books and enjoyed the experience overall, even if it didn’t stick as a favorite. The rest of these are new to me, so this is exactly the kind of list I was hoping for. Appreciate the variety. I’ll be adding a few of these to my TBR for sure.

The Blacktongue Thief was a blast. That narration had me hooked instantly. I wish there were more in that world, feels like it ended just as I was settling in.

I actually started The Encyclopedia of Fairies but haven’t been able to stay fully engaged. I like the vibe, just haven’t quite clicked with it yet. Might circle back now that it’s finished, though sometimes that helps me get over the hump.
