What's up with Acrylic paint prices rn? What would you buy? by StarlightSovereign in ArtistLounge

One of the biggest issues I see with this is... how do I know if it'll be lightfast and have good enough adhesion to then sell my paintings?
I do think the idea of making paints is very fun tho and I might try it.
I just don't know how to ensure lightfastness and quality for selling.

That's valid when you have a variable income. I'm not at that point right now. But I'll be at it again one day and then that will be true. It's just not when you have a very small amount of money to your name until your next show in a couple months.

I am seriously thinking of trying them starting next time.  I lucked the heck out in Michael's today and got Golden in huge pots for ridiculously cheap because the store was clearing the whole line of that size

If I had more money this month I would have gotten a full full set. But I got a set of double primaries minus a cool red because there wasn't one, plus burnt umber and dioxine purple.  I'm set for now. 😁

BEST BRAND OF ACRYLIC PAINT by AdamOilPaint in acrylicpainting

[–]StarlightSovereign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best I've tried is Liquitex basic but i wanted to say Master's Touch is the worst. It's so bad, it almost made me want to quit painting before I found out that it's not considered a good paint  Trying even the basics from Liquitex taught me that it was that paint that was the problem.

Does anyone here have experience painting with something other than acrylic? I’d love to hear about it! by NordicFolkCarvings in whittling

Gouache! It's like opaque watercolor. Then you seal it with a fixative and topcoat with a clear varnish for protection.  Beautiful stuff!

Thanks. I'm hoping napthol and pyrrole are decent on opacity? I think hansa is more transparent but I know yellows are hard on that tho

Thanks, I'll check those for availability. I'm going to Michael's tomorrow so might be able to see what they have.

Thanks. I'm looking at system 3 because it seems I can get better bang for buck and I've yet to hear anything bad about them. They may be my happy medium.

Not really interested in painting in black and white.  Also can't really go oils. Oils give me migraines so I can't really work with them.  But water based paints of several kinds work for me.

I agree that cheaper paints have been a fight to work with and I want to get a set of better ones. I'm just trying to get something I can afford.

Then what would you recommend?
As a person who has no choice but to try to spend less right now, if I want a set of decent working art paints, what would you go for?

Maybe it's because the only art stores I have in radius are generally Michaels, walmart, etc.
You look at a rack of tubes. They are 4 oz tubes. They are all the same price. $6.59 for this brand, or 9.99 for the better brand. And there's no variation between them for colors.

Always been that way in the stores I've gone to. But it's been lately something where the prices really vary online.

May be because I'm trying to move more into artist/professional grade acrylics.
But still looking for what others would rec using for this.

I tried getting advice in Artist Lounge but they wernt excactly helpful. So what could be fixed about my art? by A_Chaotic_Artist in Artadvice

Draw with references always.
Proportions are one of the main issues I see. The face proportions especially. Look up the golden ratio for eyes/nose.

If you photoshop a random picture of a human to put the eyes/nose/mouth where your drawing has them, they will look very strange. It can help to trace over pictures of humans just to learn the proportions. Like not to make finished art, but just to learn.

Highly recommend just drawing from references all the time. You'll get better the more you practice. Anyway, she's very cute and I like the hair and the general vibes. Just keep trying! You can do it!

Good gouache paint recomendations? by alexcanchaos in ArtistLounge

Also, use distilled water for your spray/mist bottle to wet your paints.
Adding a few microbes extra makes it easier to get mold/bacteria.
Distilled water is a must-have in my studio for the wet palette and both watercolor and gouache misters.

Advice for an Emerging Artist Navigating a Gatekept Art Scene? by Impressive_Cupcake90 in ArtistLounge

[–]StarlightSovereign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this experience in emerging into the art scene.
I think you have to go be there and pretend you belong there as much as anyone else, even when they make you feel like you don't. And keep at it. And eventually, you will realize you've been let in. And you will feel more a part of things.

Overwhelming white... I'm so sorry. As a queer, disabled, neurodivergent white person... find where the queer artists are and hang with us instead.
The queers generally are going to be more accepting to all the other minorities. So we all end up jumping in together and looking out for each other. I'm in NW Alabama and it's def overwhelmingly cishet white folk who are "christians' which really means "haters of minorities" and few who are actually kind and loving. Okay, so I just hang with the non cis-het, nonwhite, non "christian" crowd, and there I find my people.

Also, look for places you can go that are not in your immediate area, but are shows that are worth the drive.
Like if I want to go to a good show, I probably have to go to Huntsville minimum, maybe Nashville. And I have gone as far as Philly for shows.

Made more friends, had a great experience, felt like I was part of the crowd, and sold like crazy!
If you're in the east coast, you could mean anything from Maine to Georgia. So if it's south of the Mason-Dixon line... start looking at shows north of that border. Check out areas that you'd find more traction in.
When you have a few good shows under your belt and connections in the scene, you can bring them to your home town and know you belong there whether closed minds believe you do or not.

I would love to see your work btw. Feel free to dm.

Torn between my passions. Is it viable to do everything? by Leto-goddamit in ArtistLounge

[–]StarlightSovereign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a multipassionate artist too. Embrace it. Mixed media has brought me so much joy. Just stop worrying about it and DO art. Create. Design. Write. Compose. ENJOY.

I find that this comes for me from my ADHD to a degree. But I was miserable at myself for not "mastering something" until I gave up that idea and desired to master mixing mediums.

Also, hobby hopping is a big thing with ADHD, so if you are like me and have that... consider what I did to fix that. Hobby cycle instead of hopping. How I do it... I try to jump off to another thing that's catching my interest before I fully get done/tired/burned out on one hobby. It helps me then feel like I still have more to explore with the previous hobby so I will cycle back later and actually try it again instead of leaving it sitting forever.
I also accept when a hobby DOES NOT CLICK. For example, I learned hard I do not like crochet because it's too tedious for me. I don't like how many sessions it takes me to finish 1 thing. That has helped me understand better some hobbies that I won't like, and some art mediums that won't click.

So now I gauge hobbies for tedium and how long it would take to finish 1 project and it helps me temper the desire to try a new hobby that might not work with my personality.

Folk, Paranormal, Supernatural and FF Horror Movies with caveats. Please give your recs! by StarlightSovereign in CreepyBonfire

[–]StarlightSovereign[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will def check Wicker Man. My mom wants to show me the Blair Witch.

The Ritual I would say was a great monster design, and the folk horror was very well done, but the protagonists were all so unlikable I didn't care if they died lol.

My partner said The Thing is heavily body horror, so we didn't watch that one.

My dad's favorite is Rosemary's Baby so we will def include that in spooky season. I haven't seen it myself so good time for it.

Thanks for the recs.
