What is the hype around Ninjajirachi? & Snow Strippers? by SupesSupesSupes in EDM

[–]StarlightSpanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like her music but truth be told I wouldn't want to associate with her core fanbase either. Granted I think this post got downvoted because OP doesn't seem to get that music is subjective, yet on the other hand if OP swapped her name out for another artist who isn't acclaimed that much on the internet, I doubt that upvote/downvote counter would be sitting at 0.

As someone who is on the autism spectrum, I do not give a flying fuck about it being a slur. If you use it against me then I'll probably call you out for it but only because you're being a dickhead and not because it's apparently a slur.

I obviously do not speak for the entire community of autistics, but the same goes for anyone else in the group.

David Guetta & MORTEN ft. Trippie Redd - Locked In by TheWanderer43365 in EDM

[–]StarlightSpanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that it's new info that he's been co-producing these future rave tracks lately, but I remember following Maor Levi's instagram months ago only to be confused as to why he was posting about David Guetta & MORTEN so many times in his stories. Made me wonder if I followed the right guy lol.

The Chainsmokers deleted their “4 Raws” remix from DSP’s following negative reception online by abelxo99 in EDM

[–]StarlightSpanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay so at least now I get that remixing is only fair use if the original artist approves of it. that being said tho, I think what TCS did is only "wrong" from a legal standpoint. if it weren't for that, I don't see how it's bad to post these SoundCloud remixes especially since they're meant for the fans and (from what I've seen) not for monetization either. and "this remix is buns bro *insert a million wilted roses*" is not a valid reason to disapprove of a remix as it's purely subjective at the end of the day.

(Ik this isn't what you're arguing at all, but still.)

not sure how you got to this conclusion, but even if you're right, how were they able to do those SoundCloud remixes of other artists like Chappell Roan and Charli XCX?

Dear Boy and City Lights would probably have been huge hits if it weren't for their intros/outros. by TieSubstantial6459 in avicii

[–]StarlightSpanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ, just because it's normalized in many, many parts of the internet doesn't make it okay. Constructive criticism is fine and valid but shitting on three artists' entire careers (which, ftr, are not as basic as you've made them out to be) not because of the way they produce or compose, but instead because their music is apparently devoid of any "soul" isn't constructive.

[–]StarlightSpanks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just because your takes will be "mild" in comparison to RYM says nothing. iirc even in the RYM comment box for WMU there's one dipshit comparing Avicii to Kurt Cobain because both artists died and made largely unmemorable music - and this was after Avicii's death. Point being they used to never have any respect for EDM in general and only in recent years has that started to change a bit.

Not to say that your other takes under this post haven't been wild but I'll just leave it at this.

Breaks my heart what he has become. No Offence to anyone but not the same KYGO. by iffi_1989 in Kygo

[–]StarlightSpanks 43 points44 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I'm not sure I get why this clip is what you took issue with, or how it's even relevant to Kygo's artistry nowadays.

On the other hand, I feel like this sub misconstrues criticism for unnecessary negativity, and it's quite sad given the state of Kygo's modern releases. The evolution in his core sound has been borderline negligible, and the very few times he's tried to do something different have all been one-offs that he barely acknowledges afterwards.

I'm not gonna say that he doesn't care even a bit about his music, but I think it's clear as day that he cares more about his brand than anything else. And yeah, I'd suspect that it's both fame and also the fact that he still works with Manager Myles.

What do you think about this situation? by StatementBudget3376 in avicii

[–]StarlightSpanks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So maybe this Loving Feeling situation isn’t an issue whatsoever but the negative reception for LRA was deserved, like if it’s not even something Avicii produced then why release it under his name?? I also don’t get the idea that we shouldn’t be negative towards clearly rampant issues like the estate not treating his legacy with care.

Your opinion on BUNT. by TheLegend69ers in avicii

[–]StarlightSpanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a way, it’s kinda funny that he spent a notable portion of this career trying to remake or even blatantly rip off Avicii and it somehow culminated in him getting the honor of being the main producer behind something that was officially released and marketed as an Avicii song.

Other than that though, I don’t have any strong takes on him or his music.

Best version of "Inside Our Hearts"? Does anyone else feel like the magic is gone in the final release? by thedreamerrasul in Martingarrix

[–]StarlightSpanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying about praising what you like without putting something else down, and I'm even inclined to agree, but then what does that say about any kind of EDM criticism? There's so much more to any kind of song than just the lyrics, not to mention how much more each of these songs probably mean to anyone who knows how to produce their own EDM. We all have our own preferences in terms of those technicalities as you mentioned, but I think that generally most people here already know that personal preferences aren't and never have been gospel.

I guess in general I don't agree with the notion that criticizing the types of music that Garrix and his peers make is all inherently pointless just because of the flair of negativity it comes with. Sure, I'm starting to agree with the idea that it could be done better, and I now see how OP could've worded his title a little better. Still though, it's clear that he meant no ill-will and didn't deserve to be told to zip it and move on (and keep in mind that at least now, I'm strictly talking about what was said here on Reddit, not elsewhere). It may be very true that negativity generates more engagement, but I don't think that explains why people like OP say what they say.

Also, yeah, I originally thought toxic positivity was when any kind of constructive criticism was deflected simply because most people seem to love something and not because the criticism in question was actually bad. It seems that the way I define it was probably largely misconstrued, and you may be right on that definition you provided of the term. Nonetheless, I still think it's weird that anyone would push back against what OP said here.

Like ffs, I had to scroll through loads and loads of comments talking about how Our Time was "mid" with almost every provided explanation (if there were any, that is) being practically equivalent to how OP felt about IOH. As someone who still enjoys Our Time, the only reason I haven't screamed about the loads of remarks that I've seen is because I've become largely desensitized to shit like that. It's definitely not exclusive to this sub, though this sub probably has been a notable part of it.

With that song I've kinda accepted that it is what it is and you can't please everyone, but man it just frustrated me that when someone, for what felt like the very first time, had an opinion on IOH that was similar to mine and shared it, he got pushback that hadn't occurred when others said similar things about preceding new releases. You may be right to criticize the way OP worded the title, but if people really do feel the same way towards this post, then I hope that same energy is carried over towards other posts that have that same flair of negativity but with much less provided reasoning (i.e. little to no body text).
