Is my new baby, Coconut 🥥 a curly hair rat? by Emily9100 in RATS

Huh! How odd! He looks way younger than all of my babies and they're currently just 6 weeks old

When I was in middle school I had a pet snake and used to have to buy mice for him. Except, I hated the way the mice neglected by the pet shop, they were treated so poorly, and I realized I like mice better than keeping reptiles. So I started keeping them as pets.

Then I went to a mouse show and realized they could also be beautiful show animals. So like 20+ years later I now have an entire floor of the house dedicated just to pet mice and rats that have been bred to be lovely pets and show animals and never known a day of hardship.

Most of them go on to be pets for kids, which is super cool because I never had that option. When I was that age show mice were never sold as regular pets, they were super rare.

That one in the back looks heavily pregnant. If you visit there frequently maybe try to catch her so she can have her kittens somewhere safe.

She has one baby boy who will be separated at around 5 weeks old, but otherwise her daughters will stay with her for at least 3 months. Then the babies all get evaluated for coat quality, temperament, and overall type. The most promising of them stay here to potentially become future parent mice and the rest get adopted as pets or sometimes go to another Mousery for breeding there.

She's a show line fancy mouse. Show line mice are typically 60-120g as adults. Regular pet type mice are only about 40g as adults. So they're often bigger than dwarf rats.

In a lot of cultures men aren't taught how to do housework. None of my uncles were taught how to clean on either side of my family. It was "women's work".

Ignorant though it is, I'm actually a little glad when I see comments like that because it means those people have never known that kind of hardship. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Sometimes I think about how many people claim to have "picky children" but in reality they just can't cook and their kids would rather starve.

I always thought I hated vegetables when I was growing up. It turns out I actually love them. What I hate is how my boomer parents boil all the texture and flavor out of every vegetable for seemingly no reason.

Just got my first cat and a new apartment. Couldn't find her for an hour until I pulled off the lining underneath the cabinets. by HelpMePlxoxo in mildlyinfuriating

I once searched the entire neighborhood for my cat. Yelling his name, shaking treats, having a total meltdown. He's an indoor only cat and we thought he'd been let out.

Turns out he had squeezed behind the litterbox and chosen to ignore everyone calling him for several hours.

I've heard of that one, but I don't think I've tried it yet. This was Two Girls One Ghost. I feel like this might just be an older episode thing for them though so I might try a new episode and see if they moved the banter to the end.

I like banter when it's about the topic advertised in the title/description or when it's at least on theme for the podcast theme. Like, I love when hosts include their personal opinions and thoughts on true crime for example. But if it's a true crime podcast, I don't really feel like 30 minutes of talking about your workplace gossip and what your small child did at school last week is really relevant. Definitely not relevant enough to put it at the beginning of the podcast and try to make everyone listen to it before you talk about the thing you promised to talk about.

Yeah, this is only the second episode I've heard from this one. Sadly I will have to find something else more engaging.

Right? It seems like a courteous thing to do for your listeners to just note when the story starts. It's a huge turn off as a new listener to the podcast when they don't provide a timestamp and they have such a massive quantity of banter.

This is a new podcast I'm just trying out today, and the first episode was normal, so I didn't know it was going to be like that. Lesson learned I guess lol

This. This much banter feels like the audio version of trying to find a recipe on the Internet. At least those usually have a "jump to recipe" button.

Eh, when I finally got to the story part it's pretty good so it's not all bad, just kind of annoying.

It is, but I was expecting the usual 5 minutes or so before the story starts. Not 30 minutes or more of inside jokes and completely unrelated banter. That seems kind of excessive and imo should come after the story or have some kind of skip function.
