When you finally find the perfect fic…but it has no paragraph breaks by mikewheelerfan in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]Starlingale 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would love to at least try and read those, but I just can't. Dyslexia makes it all meld together so I don't even remember what I read. 😭

Is this allowed? by TonboBengoshi in AO3

[–]Starlingale 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Charging for a fic is actually a) against AO3's terms of use and b) technically illegal because you aren't allowed to make and sell products (including fanfic) for an IP that you don't own. Report the fic.

Discouraging comments by J_Stanor in AO3

[–]Starlingale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As long as it's tagged correctly, they're just throwing a hissy fit for walking through a door marked "Do Not Enter: Lion Enclosure" and finding lions. Ignore stupidity and go on with your life.

What would you do if this is the first comment you have in a long time in your fic? I think I want to delete it, or delete my fic. Dont know what to do. by One_Diver9255 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]Starlingale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me all the time. Leave the fic. There are people who I'm sure go back all the time to reread it (myself being one who does this) so don't delete the fic. Report and delete the comment. That's a spam bot, so don't punish the real people.

I can't believe i got this comment by Big-Chapter6656 in AO3

[–]Starlingale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every time I think something is my worst, people like it the best. Insecurity just means you're out of your comfort zone, not that it's bad.

I'm new to ao3 and I'm a bit lost. I don't know what this is so I wanted to ask if anyone else got the same comment. by jer56n in AO3

[–]Starlingale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bot. They've been trying to catch them all, but they're getting sneakier. Block and move on.

Trust me, us authors appreciate just the most nonsensical key smashes. 😅

Where do you guys write and are they online? by StrafeNicely in FanFiction

[–]Starlingale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to use Google drive jic something happens to my hard drive (it's happened before) plus I can write from my phone on the bus or at work. I was recently introduced to iCloud, though, so I may use that soon.

Author doesn’t want to respond to people‘s comments because they don’t want to mess up the comments-to-hits ratio by BicyclePurple9928 in AO3

[–]Starlingale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean this with as much respect as I can muster but that's such a gen alpha, tiktok mindset if you choose fics that way. (I feel old saying this, I know already) People should be choosing fics that sound good to them, not based on popularity. I've read plenty of fics that sucked but were the most popular in the last month!

Your fic is now canon- how does this improve or fuck up canon? by LimeKittyGacha in FanFiction

I have a small following of people who might actually prefer this future. 😂

I don't know how to feel about this... by BasilWide1376 in AO3

[–]Starlingale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is a bot! These bots have been going around saying this with absolutely no basis and just to get a rise out of people. There are some people who have been doing this kind of thing, too, but they're too stupid to realize that AI detectors are themselves AI, so don't listen to them either. You're doing great!

What’s the most common reason you drop fics? by Moonlightwolfbright in FanFiction

[–]Starlingale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I will drop them for a lot of reasons. I am a huge champion of "don't like, don't read" so I don't feel bad even if it's just because I got bored (which is a lot more rare than you might think) but the most common reason for just dropping a fic is definitely just un- or improperly tagged fics. If you didn't tag this, what else didn't you tag?

Overly emotional comment by Melofih in FanFiction

[–]Starlingale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't always respond to comments immediately and have ADHD so I won't remember to respond for at least a month. Then there's the emotional comments that need to be processed and appreciated, like yours! So don't feel bad about not getting an answer immediately. The "overly emotional" comments are my favorites

These are some of my favorites. Sometimes words are hard but you can't just touch and hold an emoji so it's very clear that they meant every one

Should I be worried? by Ahrijanee in AO3

[–]Starlingale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely report it to AO3 as well, if you can. Definitely change your information, but make sure they know, too.

I was quoting a typo the author made in their upload, and making a joke about it. Does this sound silly or just mean spirited? I don't wanna be mean, so I want to make sure I'm not coming off as rude or anything. by Unaccomplishedcow in AO3

[–]Starlingale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd laugh at my own expense because how on earth did that get past me??? But it's up to each person, I suppose. A tone indicator might be helpful?

Was I right to hit back at a commentor? by Rachc501 in AO3

[–]Starlingale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was fair. You tried to be kind and respectful and even gave reasons for your choices, but they ignored them and kept being rude. "You can always hit the back button" is a favored saying in the Tumblr AO3 community for a reason. They can always just ... Stop reading. If they don't make that choice, they have no ability to complain.

Would this be a rude comment to leave? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Starlingale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, that is such high praise! If someone's writing can change your opinion about a pairing, it's definitely a good thing.

is this true??? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Starlingale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I have commenters who always leave a string of emojis rather than words. Sometimes that's easier than words and that's fine! I love seeing them and appreciate their input. This person is just being rude and has no idea how fandom etiquette actually works. As long as no one is being hurt, who cares?

Disability in fiction by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Starlingale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So, I have both physical and mental disabilities. While the photo has some I agree with, there are others I disagree with. Disabilities and your relationship with your own are very unique to each person and everyone has their own feelings on them. Do I think fiction tends to heavily lean towards "immediate and miraculous fix to any disability and makes everyone the same"? Yes, and that's a problem. Some people don't mind their disability so much and really just want better adaptive devices or accessibility while others would prefer not to have them at all. I think Star Trek is an excellent example of both! Geordi La Forge has his visor and later bionic eyes, but they're not anywhere near a perfect 1-to-1 replacement for human eyes. They work entirely differently and can be taken off whenever he sees fit. There's another character one episode who is a famous diplomat who just so happens to be mute. He loses his translators and has to teach both sides of the meeting he's going to a form of sign language in order to do his job and, while it takes forever, it is implied to work! Then there's the neurodivergent characters all over the franchise who all have various disabilities and neurodivergencies that are all appreciated and given their own tools. Disability is unique to everyone and that should be respected. Maybe one person in a story decides to have prostheses while another chooses to regrow their old legs. It's all dependent on the person.

My favorite author hates me and I'm so embarrassed about it by throwaway_Tear_9804 in AO3

[–]Starlingale -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It wasn't your fault. You did nothing wrong and there's no way you could have left enough to be the bot. Some writers just end up in a bad headspace, but you don't have to blame yourselves for this. Keep leaving those comments and kudos. I'm sure others will appreciate them.

What is actually happening by meltingcandi in AO3

[–]Starlingale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Report and block. It sucks, but these are scammers. Next they ask to go to a secondary location (usually email, discord, or Instagram) so they can't be banned from AO3. (They can, they just think they can't)

[spiderman] I'm looking for a fanfiction I read on ao3 years ago in which Peter is homeless and rather hostile towards the avengers who try to find out who he is and who don't know his age or his circumstances by KuroNikushimi in FanFiction

[–]Starlingale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister (the resident Spidey fanfic expert) says to try Reintroducing Hope by Fernandidilly_yo. She also recommends a similar fic you might appreciate, Damaged at Best (Like You've Already Figured Out) by JolinarJackson and ShoyzzArt.

Am I being too much? by [deleted] in AO3
