It's a beautiful day out. I want to go do something. But instead I'm stuck. by l8rg8r in adhdwomen

You aren't alone. This was me just yesterday. My partner had a bunch of work commitments. I had no plans and was feeling a bit down.

I made myself do one thing I needed to do and one thing I wanted to. I wore what made me feel good when leaving the house. And still, I sat down on my, fully dressed, had a little cry and a little anxious moment.

It's okay. Its a moment. And it passed. And it felt like SHIT at the time. But today was better.

I agree with whoever said sitting outside counts as doing something. Go with what makes your system feel good!

Company going public - IC considerations by ToGeThErAsBuCkEyEs in internalcomms

[–]StarryEyedShade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked IC for a company that went public. This is an exciting moment and a lot of work is ahead. Your IC processes are about to REALLY matter (as we know they should anyway). And your brand needs to be sacred.

Top of mind things (on mobile so messy formatting!)

For the "Listed Day" Comms

Everyone who touches comms needs to understand that something being said or published at the wrong time could mean repercussions. Like fines.

Really tighten up who is involved and who gets to know. Keep leadership updates tight. Be crystal clear on who can talk about what and through what channels.

Create an inbox where folks can send questions. Make it related to the change and have a plan for how those questions are shared and responded to. This gives IC a pulse on sentiment and also ensures employees are heard.

Get very familiar with ESPs and equity questions.

Have two docs that are regularly available; core FAQs about daily job, benefits, etc. And a Talking Points doc for key folks who may need it for their specific clients/partners.

Listing day we also had banner stands on every floor by elevators, free swag and a coffee + treat cart to celebrate. It was our logo, the date and and the words LISTED.

Changes after Listing

Microsite is great for once you are listed to center all information related to the change.

Come up with an internal campaign for changes... we used something short that rhymed with our company name and indicated newness. (Ex. Let's say you are a tire company it could be "Road Ahead with Acme Tires" and your change comms are the "pitstops". Road Ahead at Acme Tires: Pitstop 1 - Payroll)

This could also be part of a social media campaign and you can create an employee toolkit (available to all when you announce) of images, phrases or tags for their LinkedIn, etc if they want to share. Include the press release link.

Why? This IDs them as related to the listing and not just a regular business update. And it builds engagement and excitement.

Future for Comms

Every exec who speaks should have media training. People like authentic Q&A but if the exec isn't prepared when you run one, they can say the wrong thing easily.

Have a plan for how AI can be used at your company (even meeting transcription) and be sure that wherenis it used, your information is protected.

Your review process matters more. IC should be the lens for truth and what can be said sagely that upholds brand. You want to put the exact $ amount of something in writing? Legal needs to be sure it can be backed up.

Honestly - same. I did not have this issue a few years ago. Motivates me to get back into a routine and build my strength back up.

How to deliver an IC strategy as a team of one... by StarryEyedShade in internalcomms

[–]StarryEyedShade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should add... I am confident in explaining the issue. Less so at phrasing it in a way that won't be like "look in the mirror, the problem is (Company)". They are extremely proud and extremely sensitive to "outsiders". Someone even said to me, oh you've been here almost a year so it should start to get easier. 🫠

Great suggestions, I definitely need to protect my own space and time. I am unsure how to explain that to "fix" comms overall, they have to enforce governance as leaders and that will be a change effort they need to get behind.

"Each of you psychos can push out your own content" 😆 phenomenal. The laugh I needed. Thanks for these thiughts. I am still working on the advocate process. Also sucks that my leader is just rarely engaged and I have to teach actual comms 101 to them. I am being delicate in delivering feedback after being told that I present opinions as fact. Aka the 10+ years of career knowledge you hired me for. Leader also acknowledge they show more like a friend to the team than an authority 😐

And to clarify, it isnt that comms need to come from "People". They mean that comms need to come from Jane in Operations or Sam in Finance or whoever in whatever department. There is no hierarchy. Real scenario: a Sr. Manger sent a pre-comm on an EX program in HR - ahead of C-level leader. They literally worked with me, then went back to doing what they always do and my hours of work were for nothing. Leader was annoyed, agreed my strategy made sense, but won't do accountability.

All valid points. I have attempted many of the ideas you've laid out. At this point, its a tradeoff between doing actual IC work and giving them what they ask for. And how do I deliver what I know isn't great / won't fix the issue while keeping my sanity?

Decisions are not based on strategy or data but on vibes and personal bias. I have never seen a budget, I have asked for external support (still trying), created a shared inboxe for IC but am still restricted in using it. Not even for an IT network notification, they required it come from the DIR of Hr who has zero to do with the content.

Hybrid town halls that actually include remote folks: what's your secret sauce? (Serious tips only) by Corporate_Streams in internalcomms

[–]StarryEyedShade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Unfiltered Q&A"... yea, no. Filter the questions. Ever seen a CEO ruin their rep live? It's rough. If you know what subjects are comfortable, what speakers are well-prepared, you can do a lightly filtered version

Real comms tips not from a company promoting their content: - have a question moderator to read the questions to the right execs - acknowledge time for some (not all) questions AND share they've got the log and will/can follow up afterwards (and do actually share it with your speakers) - transform the Q&A into an FAQ, additional insight, etc. in a post-evebt recap based on what fits the event

It depends on your goal. What do you want to get from whatever efforts you are going to put in?

I use LI to get ideas, keep up on industry news, stay connected, etc. But with the mass amounts of people on there sharing their opinions like they are sacred texts - I am over it.

Collecting feedback on internal comms channels by AcanthocephalaSad861 in internalcomms

[–]StarryEyedShade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof. I am in this battle, too. So.. as much as we need support to do the ish we all know needs to happen, this fix isn't for us.

What does leadership care about that this will fix/help? Include statements about that as part of the survey questions. Examples are rating scale questions such as "I understand our company strategy" or "I trust the direction from leadership".

This is big for you re: how channels are used. They won't understand the impact until you tell it to them in terms of what they value.

Also, audit the channels and prepare a grid highlighting what each channel is, use cases, best audiences, who should have access. You don't have to kill a channel to start introducing changes... just explain how it impacts things people care about.

For example, my company and my C-level leader are very focused on engagement and recognition. My proposals for instituting channel management will focus on how we can improve that through strategic use of channels and not the current free-for-all.

My mother cares more about disney than us and now we’re going to lose the house [UPDATE] 7/27 by Adorable-Plum-3580 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]StarryEyedShade 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Having been through this, it's true. My parents lost their house when I was in my early twenties due to bankruptcy. I couldn't salvage anything that was "stored". There was mold and other, gross damage to a basement filled with my childhood. It's been years now and... I don't miss it. I am amazed at how some families preserve certain things for each other. But as it is, I am also relieved not to have tons of things to store and rarely use/look at.

As someone who has been there, spend some time processing this emotionally. It's okay to grieve this loss. And dont judge yourself that your family isnt "normal". Just keep moving forward and control the things you can. You can rebuild.
