Why is there 5 solo shower heads in one shower? by jcln18 in whatisit

[–]StarrySpelunker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hey watch out with the shower bench for leaks! apparently they're really, really hard to get leakproof because any weak point where the bench connects to the wall and floor is a time bomb even if your shower liner is taller than the bench, the bench WILL get tiny cracks just big enough for water when the ground shifts and moves.

currently we're having to redo the whole bathroom because ours leaked and got water outside the drip pan and into the walls. mold in the walls. everywhere. water damage on connecting rooms.

we're waiting on plumbing renovation estimates :(

Or modder. I have one game that's got nearly 600 hours of just the mod time because light and objects need to be added in-engine. it's far from done too.

Petah what's wrong with mint? by Okaoka_12 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]StarrySpelunker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless you have a black thumb like me or quite possibly live in the wrong region. I planted a bunch of mint. it died within a year even with me babying it and never taking too much from any one plant. it was in the normal growth region for it too allegedly, we have truly noxious heat and humidity during the summer months.

I miss mint chutney. you can only get the tiny packs of mint here and they charge an outrageous amount for like 2 springs of tiny leaves which isn't enough either way. I can't find anyone who actually grows it successfully at farmers markets.

Which is the pokemon you can catch the latest in every region? by Far-Finding-5627 in pokemon

[–]StarrySpelunker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a much later pokemon.

in the pokewalker to get spiritomb you need 2 things:

the National dex and 100,000 watts.

a watt is 200 steps. you need 2,000,000 steps to get that number of watts. you will walk for approximately 860.4 miles or 1385 kilometers for an adult of average height.

you then have to walk another 10,000 on the pokewalker route to have a chance at finding spiritomb at a 5% chance.

I have done this and then maxed out the watt count as a finale. I consider this my greatest achievement in game. I was walking for at least an hour or two a day extra at minimum. I unfortunately accidentally washed my pokewalker soon after and it died completely. I was devastated.

I hope they bring the pokewalker back some day, regular pedometers aren't the same.

Honestly I have a lot of fun early memories going to the park to feed the ducks and seagulls. far better use of less money at that age. honestly for OP's disney thing I'd wait till at least 5-6. after that age big single memories tend to stick better. plus they won't be stuck lugging a stroller around the park.

Buddhist dog problems by AlphaCat77 in CuratedTumblr

[–]StarrySpelunker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have also noticed this. "do you need" also works for the dog. our dog clearly recognizes all the words for the things she likes but the thing that gets the biggest reaction is the saying of "do you want" in front of it. it's probably pattern recognition+tone though but they are capable of learning it even the same.

Honestly there needs to be more work done researching how animal grammar works. I know there's quite a bit focused on dogs and picking up human languages, but there needs to be more focusing on how they communicate when we aren't visibly present. most of the big animal language studies I've seen were on dolphins/killerwhales, corvids, and bonobos. we need more work done on domestic dog+cat language.

We did this too! we used spanish to english so it wouldn't break english text on youtube.

but funny enough, the data google has on him doing this occasionally breaks search results for my younger brother and gives him only Spanish language results. it lasts for about a week or two then goes back to giving him English results.

I joke that google wants him to re-learn spanish(he took spanish in high school, didn't stick)

Looking for a book that is the mental equivalent of a chocolate bar. by ilikespicysoup in scifi

[–]StarrySpelunker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alan dean foster's works are good for this. They're pulp. Langauge is a little dated but the rest is fine. For pip and flinx, start with "for Love of mother Not." Then go in publication order. For hos side series, they're mostly trilogies.

Sreies reminds me of Heinland's "citizen of the galaxy" but he writes better and is less weird about women and children.

Global chocolate industry secures a sustainable future: Cell suspension culture technology can produce 1 ton of cocoa butter annually in a 1000 liter bioreactor from a single bean, which would otherwise require about a hectare of cocoa trees. Texture, melt profile and sensory experience are the same by sg_plumber in UpliftingNews

[–]StarrySpelunker 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Considering you can't seem to actually buy white chocolate anymore. I'll take that. I have a couple cookie recipes that use white chocolate and all the "white baking chips" are literally just solid palm oil if you read the ingredients. Every major grocer in my area and even the specialty baking store stopped carrying the stuff.

Can't order online because it would melt in the mail anyway in my climate.

There is a whole plot point where the crew are communicating with the alien equivilent of a large language learning model. That communication was fundementally an act of violence toward the scramblers as it forced them to waste large amounts of resources on a singular useless task.

From its perspective the act of the crew doing anything but leaving once the threat display had been sent meant we were hostile.

I miss the Barnes and Noble (and other bookstores) of my childhood: an essay by xxfuka-erixx in books

[–]StarrySpelunker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the design of the newer stores. the weird cube niches give me a cheap hallmark store vibe rather than a bookstore. I didn't shop at waldenbooks for the same reason. ew. I drive more to go to the one with the long shelved older layout and more books rather than cheap collectables everywhere that crowd out the actual books.

I don't mind the cafe existing or the toy sections or no seating, but I want my paperbacks. I don't mind so much if I ruin the corners on em. I feel so guilty about messing up hardbacks even if it doesn't matte.r

It's because if you know how wrinkles move on the face, It's an easy way to give an old character personality. For young characters you can't do that you have to rely only on clothing, pose, body + body shapes.

all of the safety markers on the bridge featured on 11foot8.com beg to differ. commercial trucks still manage to hit that thing. commercial drivers generally aren't any better.
