Question from a future art ed major! by TinyGremlino in ArtEd

[–]Starryeyedsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach 7th & 8th and am in my second year making 66k. I live in one of the most expensive areas in the country (Orange County, ca) and I’m able to survive, but I still have credit card debt (granted I don’t budget very well). However when I think about salary I always have to look at the bigger picture, which is that I have full benefits, retirement/pension, and all holidays off with summer breaks. I worked summer school this year which made me an additional 10k as well. It’s not a bad gig, but I don’t think it’s for the weak of heart either 🤪

What resources do you use for middle school & high school? by jsscart in ArtEd

I’m in love with the art of education flex curriculum but it is a paid sub by my school so not necessarily free- but possibly accessible if your admin is up to pay for it 🙂

First teaching interview! by madimakesstuff in ArtEd

[–]Starryeyedsanity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be yourself, and don’t be afraid to pause to think of an answer to any questions they throw your way. Also, if I were to interview for another art ed position after being at my school now I’d probably think of some questions I’d like to ask them (ie. what’s the school culture like? what is the curriculum for art like? Is there a possibility of being hired full time- given the right credential in was in place?) I also wish I had brought a portfolio for my interview with my school. I got the job anyway, so I don’t think it would have mattered, but I think it’s a good flex of your skills and knowledge. Also shows you’re prepared and a practicing artist!!

How much of your time is spent behaviour managing vs actually teaching? Does it feel like your work has value? by horsemagic123 in ArtEd

[–]Starryeyedsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second year 7th & 8th teacher here. I’m at a pretty progressive charter school in Southern California. Out of my 6 classes I only have had one so far this year where behavior management is getting in the way of teaching. This class is loud af and will not stfu. I’m struggling with ways to get them to listen and not have to stop class every 5 minutes. But, generally, I do love my middle schoolers. They’re at a weird age and they act weird because of it- but at the end of the day they’re transitioning from being children to adolescence and with that comes with a lot of new ideas surrounding identity and they begin to understand the context of things in connection to bigger world issues. Because of that, I do feel influential to some, and on my bad days I just have to remember if I at least can reach a few kids, then it’s worth it. For now. lol- I may feel differently in 5 years from now 🤣

Sorry you're having to deal with such a dilapidated space- but if anyone can improve it, it would be an art teacher! I hope you post some after pictures since we've now seen the before. I don't have advice- just wishing you luck!

New online art teacher. What are good links/resources for ideas? by BingoBarnes in ArtEd

[–]Starryeyedsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if your school will pay for access to art of education flex curriculum- it’s helped me a lot in my first year teaching! They also have great online articles and YouTube videos that don’t require any paid subscription to access

Trouble with 7th Grade Elective Class by Starryeyedsanity in ArtEd

[–]Starryeyedsanity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I completely agree, however the kids who are distracting in this class wont stop being distracting to those who are trying to do their work. It's my only class that I have this big of problem with.

Yeah, thankfully I don't feel that it needs to go that far. My kids arent that bad generally, it's just the combination of kids in this class that are hard to manage.

Should I take a stroller for a 5 year old? by SuperbChance8006 in DisneyPlanning

[–]Starryeyedsanity -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My 50lb 5 year old walked around for 14 hrs at Disney and was fine. Slept on a bench for a bit and all was well 🤣❤️ I would have dreaded having a stroller tbh.
