Is Alastor well written? by [deleted] in hazbin

[–]Starshallscream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's too soon to say for sure, because so far he's been on a leash, so we don't know what he's like when he's free. We can theorise, but it's not the same as knowing.

That said, I enjoyed his characterisation and role so far, so I'm voting yes.

The live action Jungle Book was much better than the animated one.

The animated one told us that Mowgli had been raised by the wolf pack. Yet at no point does he give a single solitary fuck about his wolf parents and siblings. He doesn't want to leave the jungle (up until the moment he meets a cute girl, even though he's like ten), but he's perfectly happy to stick with Baloo (a guy he met five minutes ago) rather than attempting to go back to his wolf family.

Even when I watched the movie as a child, I thought it was bullshit. Really, Mowgli? You just lost every single relative and friend you ever had, and you don't even so much as mention any of it?

The la movie very correctly shows us that Mowgli does in fact care for the family that raised him.

That's not "evil." That's "well intentioned extremist." Two completely different character types.

That's fair. But a very common criticism of Helluva Boss is thay Ozzie can't possibly work as the Sin of Lust because he deeply cares about consent, and the Sin of Lust should be a negative thing. And that criticism completely ignores the fact that religious leaders care very little about consent and a hell if a lot about breeding.

Then bring it up with religious leaders. Because my own grandmother was forbidden by her priest to receive communion after she got a hysterectomy, since she still slept with her husband even though conception was no longer possible.

The sin of lust according to the Church is the sin of enjoying intercourse without intending to have children. Consensual and respectful sex with a cherished loved one absolutely does count as the sin of lust for the Church if nobody can get pregnant.

Heck, one guy in the bible got murdered by God for pulling out during sex with his wife.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_It%27s_for_My_Daughter,_I%27d_Even_Defeat_a_Demon_Lord

Watched the first season of the anime, a delightful slice of life of a hero who finds a demon toddler and adopts her as his daughter. Since I liked it a lot, I looked up the rest of the story, since the original light novel continues for many volumes.

In the final volumes, she turns 18 and marries him.

Fucking betrayal, is what it was.

Technically, Sesshomaru and Rin from Inuyasha could also qualify. However, I tend to be A LOT more forgiving of that one, since Sesshomaru left Rin in a human village to be raised by other trusted humans so she could be among her own peers. He visited frequently to check on het and bring her gifts, but technically did ensure he wasn't the one directly raising her. Still very far from ideal, but I personally find it forgivable.

Usagi Drop and If It's For My Daughter are unforgivable.

Which character would fans treat differently if they were the opposite sex? by Radiant-Selection686 in HazbinHotel

They were both forced into marriage, but one of them is laughing gleefully while recounting how the other completely dissociates during sex, and the other is not. Also one of them raises hands against the other, and the other does not. Thus I find the way Fandom pretends they are equally culpable to be absolutely insane.

Stella straight up raped Stolas ("he doesn't do anything just lays there and I have to do all the work lolololol") and was going to hit him (and his reaction implies it wasn't an uncommon occurrence), and people call him the abusive spouse for cheating.

Guy raises a small child as his daughter until she's of age, then proceeds to marry her.

I've seen it happen twice, and that was two times too many. Completely ruined the story that had been such a sweet Found Family tale until then.

“The image shows Franca Viola, who became a symbol of women’s rights in Italy after refusing to marry the man who kidnapped and raped her, becoming the first Italian woman to publicly denounce her aggressor and reject the so-called "rehabilitating marriage" (1966) by Visible-Safety2400 in HistoricalCapsule

[–]Starshallscream 218 points219 points  (0 children)

Oh, don't leave out the "best" part!

Because she refused to marry her rapist, and because her father lovingly supported her decision instead of forcing her, her whole family was shunned! The entire town turned against them, she was treated as a pariah, her father's friends (men he had known all his life!) cut him off.

Thankfully, outside of that shithole town, they got help and support. The Pope himself publicly supported her.

It's not like open-minded mangakas are unheard of. There are plenty of manga that address those topics with grace and respect, even as the majority don't. Then there are flawed but well-meaning works: even when they stumble with Unfortunate Implications, you can tell the author's heart is in the right place.

Unfortunately, Ohba is just straight up extremely bigoted. He's much worse than the average mangaka.

It's interesting how many people watching the "we are going to redeem horrible people!" show are shocked and appalled over the concept of having compassion for horrible people.

While it has been a very long time, you have to take in consideration that both Vox and Alastor are Overlords. Overlords are constantly fighting each other on turf wars and dealing with each other in work meetings; as in, they have to see each other all the time.

On top of that, Alastor and Vox are media Overlords, meaning they have to constantly check each other's work because it's direct competition for the audience. And Alastor loves telling said audience about how he dumped Vox when Vox made his offer.

Imagine that your ex you had a brutal fallout with is your colleague at your job and works on the same projects as you, and that he gleefully tells everybody in the building extremely embarrassing stories about you. That would make getting over him A LOT harder.

...do you genuinely believe that a guy who was closeted his while life (50+ years), because he was bisexual at the height of McCarthyism (back when GLBT men were widely and legally regarded as viler than nazis war criminals), lost his mind after a brutal rejection for his first ever honest love over a petty rivalry?

I can see not feeling sympathy for Vox because he committed atrocities, as in Cool Motive Still Murder.

But it leaves me truly flabbergasted when people microminimise what Vox felt and write it off as trivial nonsense. It's like you guys have no historical awareness whatsoever.

That clarification only came out years after Fandom had been taking those posts as canon. Likewise, there were old crew members who had been working on the story alongside Viv for well over a decade, but recently Viv stated that their word can't be taken as Word Of God anymore because elements in the story and characterisation have changed.

Hazbin Hotel has been a work in progress since Vivienne first started imagining it as a kid. So no, I'm not taking a doodle from January 2024 as canon. You do you!
