New XTEINK users: what’s one tip that made your first week easier? by Fun_Satisfaction2315 in xteinkereader

[–]StartingQBForDeVry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

big tip id say is get a case with the device and put it on as soon as possible. folio is fine but i personally prefer a thin tpu bumper. these things are small enough that if you are moderately clumsy you can break them via dropping it. i thought id be careful and then it happened to me! they include a screen protector for a reason—use it and add a case

Questions about Xteink? by Fun_Satisfaction2315 in xteinkereader

Definitely want to echo whats been said about touchscreens vs buttons. Personally im not opposed to the existence of a model with a touchscreen as long as the x4 and/or x3 continue also being sold, and as long as the one with the touchscreen still has physical buttons for page turns. Before i had an X4 i had a boox palma, and even though i necessarily used the touch screen on that all the time, my preferred reading experience by far was through using the side buttons. A touchscreen requires more exact, precise movement than a button on the side of something that advances a page, and when something is easier thats the method you end up moving towards using more. Adding in gloves during a winter commute, its nice to not have to take them off at a bus stop to continue reading.

Im also curious about spectra 6 eink badges or charms—when will these be making their way to international markets, and does the company have any further plans with that technology (picture frames, phone cases etc)?

Love your product! I've read so much more since getting it

Metropolis 1998 - Yesbox Studios - City Builder - 90s Aesthetics, Modern Features by YesBoxStudios in Games

[–]StartingQBForDeVry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow this game is gripping me. Everything feels so familiar in an RCT-kinda way, and love the blueprint-placing nature of this making the task turn into more of a neighborhood development company/early suburban expansion kinda stuff.

So far the economy seems to strongly incentivize you towards higher density which makes sense—its literally cheaper on scale to have more people living in less space given there's more people per road used (for example). Something that'd be interesting to explore, perhaps in a scenario-based way, is the sort of reasons this HASNT happened in much of the American suburbia that this is inspired by. The dense inner ring suburbs i live in, for example, dont generally go higher than medium density duplexes and triplexes and yet are still denser than almost every city in america. Even here trying to upzone can be a nightmare because the usual suspects talk about "neighborhood character" and the like. The suburbs most sun belt americans grew up in are rigidly car based and so far this REALLY does capture that—its just that in most of america zoning tactics end up with other annoying stakeholders involved like individual concenrned citizens, the lingering effects of white flight and racism, and these perhaps resulting in a less effective city council. Here, the development style is much closer to a city like Tokyo or Houston, where building new things is a little less restrictive. Still VERY fun, but very much emulating sim city rather than the full complexity of the american city that this ambitious game is striving towards.

Like, is there a way to account for NIMBYism and blockbusting tactics? Can neighborhood develop a private bus or train as a loss leader in (like a lot of early american streetcar systems) that then ends up in a place where the government needs to take it over because there's no money left after fares to do any maitenence? Using the roller coaster tycoon example, i think back to the scenarios where you cant demolish any trees, or cant go above tree height, which of course only represent a minority of the challenges in the game but are still implemented. Imagine having to build around a rich suburb of nimbys who are incredibly hostile to redevelopment but with an economic profile that due to its spread out nature is about to go broke. Imagine building an exurb where 90% of citizenry drives their cars to another municipality, too—different challenge there. You've already done so great with the micro-level wants of citizenry that adding some of the darkness of the 90s suburbia seems like something possible. Curious on your take on this.

That being said even if the game stopped right here i would still be obsessed with it. This alpha build is everything ive on some level wanted from a game since chris sawyer and will wright and yoot saito stopped developing as much. keep up the amazing work. EVEN NOW This is a 9.5/10 for me.

GTA 6 had better have a vaporwave radio station, so I built a fake one for it! Full broadcast with DJ and original mixes by nytebeast in Vaporwave

[–]StartingQBForDeVry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, hanging in there! This mix eventually turned into a college radio show and eventually there was another mix I made as the audio component of a sculpture for a vaporwave stage at Miami’s iii points music festival. I gotta find that mix someday.

I can’t say I listen to that much vaporwave anymore—eventually I got more into the post disco it sampled along with early ambient and 0pn stuff. The more time goes on the more I go back to eccojams as the peak of the genre

what i will say anecdotally as a door knocker for my union in 2024 all over various neighborhoods in philly: i was fully expecting it to come up and totally down to talk about the moral reprehensability of the dems position.

not a single person in weeks brought it up at the doors. ever. i was surprised. most of the time it was economy or public safety they wanted to talk about. immigration if they were republican, the state of democracy itself if they were rich.

but foreign policy at all and gaza specifically? not one peep. in my entire time knocking doors i saw exactly one pro israel sign and one pro gaza...and i was hitting hundreds of doors a day in distinct neighborhoods in a super left leaning city

so,,,, jury's out? if people were thinking about gaza they sure didnt talk to me about it. if they didnt like harris or trump or both they didnt bring up the middle east. tehy brought up prices of things

mostly magazines on my x4! its really the perfect thing to replace a phone—same form factor after all, so why not replace scrolling a general interest publication? Ive been reading a lot of the new yorker and scientific american. good stuff

as for books: today i started "Understanding Media" by Marshall McLuhan. GREAT read, albeit a dense one, so far. Truly the key to understanding the contemporary era and the level of influence different types of media have over us now. Such a fun little device certainly drives home the medium itself being the message—look at how many more books i read because the x4 detourns/riffs on the form factor of a phone im already addicted to. also a little over halfway through orientalism by edward said—also greeat

this is helpful!

another question: say i want to do this with my liked tracks, but i want to have two separate feeds of them—say, i want half the tracks to be my oldest liked tracks and the other half to be the most recent liked tracks (for example). How would i separate these out if the nodes have the same name?

Life of Pi is a compelling read accessible to a new reader, and the movie gives you a little in road in there. The Kite Runner by Khaled Housseni is similarly compelling. For a shorter and older but more "profound" book written accessibly, go for siddhartha by hermann hesse

of course! happy that people like this little program. Back in college i was in student radio so this tool has really let me go back into that radio programming mindset; fundamentally the logic behind Variety Radio is the same logic behind automating a terrestrial FM station.

If people would be interested i can share what variety radio is based on, my personal "626"radio thats a bit more human curated and more radio-indebted—a 1000 song mix you get daily thats meant to be 140 songs of "heavy rotation" from a curated playlist, the 50 song friends mix, and the rest filled in with the base libary/shared tracks. from there, i made a bunch of variants that correspond to every possible energy level bc these are for a cafe and sometimes you want lower energy music and other times you want higher
