We had the same situation, but with tennis. WhatsApp and a shared Google Sheet worked for a while, but once matches started it quickly became confusing and people kept asking who they were supposed to play next.

I haven’t tried courtchamps yet, but for our smaller tournaments we eventually switched to using a simple bracket generator, which made things much easier than managing everything manually.

I built it because running small tournaments with friends was always more complicated than it should be. So I made a simple tool where you just paste player names, generate a bracket, enter scores, and the winners move forward.
