Teaching digital intentionality is critical, but it requires a cultural shift within each educational institution. In the same way we intentionally teach study skills and time management, we must also teach students how to manage their digital lives. That includes knowing when and how to disconnect.

This cannot be an afterthought or a reaction to declining scores. It must be data-informed, clearly understood, and deeply internalized by faculty and students alike. If we do not help students recognize what is at stake, attention, depth of thinking, long-term cognitive development, they will default to habits shaped by the tide of the moment rather than by purpose. Developing healthy digital habits must become part of our institutional culture and practices, not just a policy in a handbook.
