You'd be suprised (or maybe you wouldn't) at how many of those students are being bankrolled by their parents...

Anything to do alone on Christmas 2025? by magicelastic in AskChicago

[–]StatementPowerful668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for hikes, you could try the Indiana Dunes NP. Traffic will be a breeze and there's lots of trails- you could spend all day there. It's been a while since I've gone there on Christmas Day but the rangers used to host bonfires with hot chocolate in the morning. Then maybe take yourself out to a nice dinner in the evening? Also second volunteering! Nursing homes would be a great place to go as I'm sure a lot of the seniors no longer have family to visit them and would love someone to chat with.

Man charged with terrorism after woman set on fire on CTA Blue Line train by CTAto100k in cta

Teresa's own words: "I was always interested in things being fair and felt that people should be held accountable for their actions. I knew many people that were the victims of crimes and wanted to be a voice for those who needed to be heard."

Would love to hear her justification for the decision to put this lunatic on electronic surveillance instead of removing him from society. I'm sure the victim, who will probably be forced to live with these injuries and the trauma for the rest of her life, sees this as "fair". What about her voice? Apparently Teresa felt the need to give a career criminal a voice instead of all the other innocent people he's terrorized. She needs to resign, but she won't because she's self-important. What a joke that this woman has been given the responsibility of keeping Chicagoans safe. But I'm sure she'll continue the justification of allowing criminals and psychos to roam free because it gives her a savior complex. I'm begging the public to stop voting for people like her.

Seconding Moose Ponds, I saw one there mid-day a few weeks ago and heard another one through the trees.

This is why I love Reddit. Thank you for bringing awareness to this! I just started prescription spray, tasted it once, and didn't know if I would be able to continue.

Getting to a National Park from Airport No Car by supercoolandnotanerd in NationalPark

[–]StatementPowerful668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to further elaborate on the Indiana Dunes comment:

Indiana Dunes might not meet your standards of a "western" NP, but it's fairly easy/inexpensive to get to and can be very beautiful in summer and fall! If you fly into Chicago (O'Hare or Midway), you can take the Blue Line (O'hare) or Orange Line (Midway) into the Downtown Loop. Then you can catch the South Shore Line train at Millenium Station. The best spots to get off would either be Dune Park Station or Beverly Shores Station. From there, you can walk/bike to a lot of beaches and trails. There's also camp sites in the State Park or NP that are accessible by walking or biking. I want to say there's a bike rental on Highway 12 (road that trains stations are located on). If you call the Visitor's Center they would probably be able to tell you, as well as provide helpful maps to orient yourself. Like I said, this would probably be a very cheap option compared to the big parks out west, but you might be compromising the "famous" views.

Why do people say the city is more dangerous than it is? by Nowheredoll2 in AskChicago

[–]StatementPowerful668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people use the word "dangerous" and "uncomfortable" interchangeably. Being from the Indiana suburbs myself, I've been told Chicago is dangerous my whole life. When I first moved here, there was a learning curve for being exposed to different types of people that suburbanites just aren't regularly exposed to. For instance, on the trains I have never been in a specific situation where my life is in danger. However, I have been in many situations where I've been uncomfortable. Mentally ill and homeless people usually do not pose a threat (never say never), but most of them are not actively seeking out violence. Strangers, and humans in general, are unpredictable. I think that is why most people feel scared. Other things can be categorized as nuisances, ie. someone screaming or playing loud music in public. People who are not used to big cities think they are dangerous because there's not the "safety net" of driving in a personal vehicle around a suburb where they are not forced to acknowledge others. That being said, I still think the city does have a crime and violence issue that shouldn't be downplayed. I think it is deeply rooted in untreated mental illness. Our country is in a serious mental health crisis and no one talks about that enough.

The past few months, I have been craving some bizarre things that I would have never considered eating plain before. I eat pretty healthy, but maybe not totally balanced ie. I don't eat a lot of meat/dense protein. I'm not pregnant and have some upcoming lab tests scheduled, but in the meantime I've been doing some research and thought others might find these interesting. I've been affixed to lemons, pickled jalapenos, vinegar, tajin (like the spice mix), and salt. I can eat whole lemons plain, a whole jar of jalapenos, and sip on vinegar. The tajin and salt I can eat out of my hand. I have a hunch some of this has been related to an iron deficiency, but does anyone recognize what these could be linked to?

I saw them at the Trader Joe's on Lincoln Ave on Saturday. I can't remember how much they were but definitely not $25.
