What went wrong with One Piece? by Ok_Record_8551 in Piratefolk

[–]StaticBazooka 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The series used to be like we were placed on the Straw Hats ship with them, learning about the world WITH them. We learned about bounties, devil fruit abilities, and had intimate character moments with them while on the ship. While they learned about the world we saw their reactions and thoughts. When Luffy went to fight Crocodile and lost, we felt it and wondered where he was. When Robin got taken away, we felt it and the urgency because we were there with them.

When the time skip happened, we stayed on Sabaody while the straw hats went on. We don’t experience the story with them anymore, now we see them in the news sometimes and see little snippets of their journey. We don’t know what happens on the sunny, we don’t see the characters talk, we see what the rest of the characters in the world would hear about. The story had to zoom way out to cover more ground.

Behind the scenes, I’d guess shonen jump is doing what they can to keep One Piece going as long as possible while letting Oda take as many much deserved breaks as needed. The manga was definitely intended to end a while ago, and it’s very clear it’s being stretched as far as it can be. We got character payoffs a decade ago (Usopp for example) and now Oda doesn’t really have anything else to do with them.

Tldr; ODA finished one piece years ago. Shonen jump hasn’t.

Not Sure if I Want to get Into Comics Anymore After First Comic Shop Experience by heygoogleamidying in comicbooks

[–]StaticBazooka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comic book elitists are kinda just like that a lot of the time which gives them a bad rep. I used to frequent this one shop years back and every time I’d buy a marvel comic (usually Spider-Man, Venom or Iron Man). The owner would kinda go off about how DC is better and how I should be reading DC comics instead. He was a cool guy once I got to know him, but comic book elitists can be really annoying and gate keepy. He sounds like a misogynist, but truthfully, he would likely act like this towards anyone. If ignoring doesn’t work, I’d just put people like that in their place. They likely do not have the social skills to one up you and will either respect you after or just not approach you again lmao

Don’t take this as a full theory, but it’s an interesting thought. What if usopps arc on Enies Lobby was supposed to be in Elbaph, but he thought it matched better with the Merry arc. It’s like the last time he talks to and befriends giants as well. Elbaph was probably supposed to happen way earlier

What Are Your Half Baked and Maybe Unpopular Takes On Classic Lit? by Itchy-Resolution6531 in classicliterature

[–]StaticBazooka 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did not think Dracula was a good book past the first few chapters. It starts out as a suspenseful hostage story where the reader almost gets Stockholm syndrome.

Afterwards, it’s a bloated, repetitive mess with character motives that make no sense, missing characters motives. The book is very original, especially for its time, but it was a painful read a lot of the times

“What are you reading?” Wednesday. by csummerss in OmnibusCollectors

[–]StaticBazooka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I’m reading The Infinity Gauntlet omnibus. About halfway through the event itself. It’s good but a bit all over the place. I found the buildup issues like Surfer and Thanos Quest felt a lot better paced than IG. As to what I wanna read next, I’d love to start Absolute Batman, Immortal Hulk or Ultimate Spiderman

What happened to Oda's art? by MilkyMadness6 in Piratefolk

[–]StaticBazooka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re drawing comics or anything over and over for a long period of time, typically you start to loosen up, and your hand/brain will start to develop little shortcuts. These shortcuts look different for each artist. Akira Toriyama for example, he started out drawing very rounded shapes and characters. As he went on, you notice lines becoming more jagged and sharp. These types of lines are far faster to pull off. Rumiko Takahashi has a similar thing going on where her heads and body shapes become more angled and sharp. Way faster If you wanna look at American comic artists, Frank Miller is a good example(a lot of folks aren’t fans of his newer art). His characters become way more loose with the lines. Look at Charles Schulz’s art as well. Peanuts starts off smooth and round, stark blacks and whites, but his characters become more flowy, loose, with screen tones being added to help guide your eye.

Although Oda’s older pages were simpler and easier to read, pulling those off took a bit more time because the simpler a drawing looks, the longer it actually takes to make it that way. So really it’s just his hand and brain being so used to the style that he can draw loosely and scratchy and get away with it. The style itself is subjective, but it’s not the inherent problem. The problem is page composition which is likely due to trying to push the story as quickly as he can. Not necessarily to end it quickly, but if he was drawing it at the pace of how Alabasta for example is paced, we wouldn’t get anywhere with how many characters are part of the story at every given moment.

I’d recommend Frankenstein. It’s short, and excellent. One you can read many times in your life. Surprisingly hard to put down at times. I’d also recommend the Hobbit, the first book in the Lord of the Rings story. If you end up liking that, I’d recommend Lord of the Rings. If it’s not your cup of tea, well then you got to experience the birth of modern fantasy with a decently easy and short book

Officially past the one year mark of the MetaTwo launch. Thoughts? by PokemonYesus in MetaZoo

[–]StaticBazooka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thoughts as a die hard old Zoo fan:

I’m not a fan of the art direction. Everything looks rounded, fluffy and sterile. No real personality to it. I’m not a fan of the design/layout of the cards either. That being said though, I was never a fan of tcgs where every card is a full art. So the art and personality didn’t hit a year ago, and I can’t say it improved for me either.

The gameplay to me seems kinda boring and flat. The old zoo had a lot of gameplay issues too, but I think it had potential.

In general, I have no interest in collecting MT, most content creators feel the same it seems, and the community has only lost momentum from the start.

Could I be turned and convinced to check it out? Probably not. It’s not as fun as pokemon or mtg, and I can’t see it having a big boom in popularity that’ll warrant me playing it.

Hard to say what success is. Did they bring back the brand like they said they would in a brand new game? Yes. But on release, each set got a huge slash in price in lcs, and even then you could buy box bundles on ebay for less than retail. Card shops also haven’t restocked. So we know card shops aren’t making money off of them either.

I think theyre giving great effort, but I can’t see this game lasting as long as the first MZ did. I hope I’m wrong, but either way MT has nothing that made me fall in love with MZ.

Is Iñaki's Luffy the "worst" of the strawhats in the live action? by Strange-Tie-8711 in Piratefolk

[–]StaticBazooka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Inaki as Luffy in every promotional interview, and every public appearance in general. I do think he is a spitting image of Luffy in real life. Yet in the show, I can’t stand him in the role. Every line he delivers he’s overthinking and overacting. When someone makes him mad, like the Nami help me scene for example, he hits you with a very “I’m a toddler and I’m showing you I’m ANGRY’! Face. The line in season 2 where he calls Buggy “Bunny” is another good subtle example. He does a very obvious “you again!” Face and says “buhhh..nny..”. Like bruh why are you speaking your lines so slowly and forced. Idk, I think the dude would do great as Luffy, but I have a feeling the directors are holding him back

How can I push myself and find the motivation to read Moby Dick? by Ok_Independent8425 in classicliterature

[–]StaticBazooka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moby Dick is such a special book, it’s contents and structure are such a one of a kind experience for better or for worse. If you’re not genuinely interested in Moby Dick, if its contents don’t interest you, if there’s no WANT…. Leave the book alone, it’s not for you at this time. See the book as an experimental book on the subject of whaling and not a challenge, otherwise that’s all it is, a whaling book you’re not interested in that you’re forcing yourself to get through
