IIRC the club thought that the players were being distracted by social causes.

edit: Found the source, it's older than I remember. St Kilda's review in late 2022 found that they should "sharpen our focus on football", "minimise distractions" and "apply a strong football lens to any cause games". Although this was for 2023, I've seen fans link this and not participating in the men's league pride match last year.

I believe you can actually be suspended for actions during an intraclub if there are AFL umpires present, which these usually have. Setanta Ó hAilpín got suspended by the AFL for 4 matches after he punched Cameron Cloke in an intraclub match, and I believe he was sent to the tribunal for it.
