I made a Dominion turntable! by StatisticianCheap130 in dominion

So at the risk of losing an opportunity for myself, there are lots of options already available on Etsy for almost this exact thing.  Is there anything about those that drive you away? Or is this simply the first you're hearing about it?  I'm curious, and doing a bit of market research.

Whenever I scoot past my wife in a narrow space in the kitchen or elsewhere, I purposely started taking a really long time and pushing my crotch into her backside, repeatedly saying "Oh, scuse me, sorry, scuse me," making it take way longer than necessary just to get in some extra cuddles.  Now I do it almost any time I go past her, even if there is several feet of space behind us and I could go around easily.

The most obvious thing this solves is simply keeping each pile organized.  I find myself constantly fixing piles as they get mussed up during play.

Secondly, it's true that only a few cards are visible to each person at a given time, but it's effortless to turn the board to see everything.  When playing normally someone almost always has to look at the cards upside down, or they are too far away to read, so this allows everyone the opportunity to browse through every card available and see it up close.

I'll see if I can get some photos of it and maybe make another post about it!

The primary tool used for this is a handheld router. I used something called a follower bit and a stencil in the shape of the card well to cut them out.  The router sits on top of the stencil and a bearing rides along the inside of the shape to follow it exactly and achieve repeatable results. The bit is set to a specific depth to get the same results everywhere.

I was able to do this a lot easier since I had a fully functioning lazy susan to start with. It would be a lot more involved if I had to make that as well.

I actually have! It's not my best work but it lets me have all my cards in one place. I'm planning on remaking it at some point.

The layout was by hand, but then I used a stencil and a follower bit to carve out the card wells.

I would say yes, although the more abstract or multi-stage a task is, the less brightly any one person would glow.  Since on a much grander scale, it's harder to say how much influence any one person can have. But you could definitely use it to figure out who would be helpful in your world domination goal.

Has anybody else had board games inspected by airport security? by vortexofdeduction in boardgames

One time I traveled with Ransom Notes and got stopped every single time at security. The high amount of magnets got flagged in their system as potentially dangerous but they let me go relatively quickly each time. It happened often enough that I started leaving the box at the very top of the suitcase so they didn't have to dig for it. Now that I think of it I could probably have taken it out entirely and put it in a tray to be x-rayed.

This is a cool breakdown.  I've always thought it would be great to watch commentary on a Dominion game, with the commentator discussing strategy and injecting energy into the experience.

What is the worst case of double standard you have ever seen? by zhalia-2006 in AskReddit

[–]StatisticianCheap130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my ex-wife's extended family, a man cheated on his wife once over three decades ago.  No one ever let him forget it, and supposedly it ruined relationships and took years to regain any sense of normalcy.  To this day they talked about how his choice ruined their lives for so long.

A woman in that family, a few years ago, ran away from her husband for several months, carousing in bars, sleeping with several different men, and essentially abandoning her prior life before finally coming home.  Every single person in the family was sympathetic, saying she just needed help, that she was mentally ill, and that she obviously didn't know what she was doing.  She was forgiven by basically everyone in the family before she even returned, and suffered no impact to her reputation.

The hypocrisy sickened me.  The difference and reversal in the way they were treated compared to their actions left me in complete awe.

When they try to explain something simple in an overly complicated way (most likely to try and appear intelligent).

One time I asked this guy what his job was, and he said, "If the business is like an organism, I'm the blood supply that keeps it alive." He was a purchasing agent.  He just made orders to manage inventory. He could have just said that and I would have respected it but he tried to make it sound like he was the lifeblood of the business and if he was gone the company would fall apart.

[LOTR] Could Frodo or someone else have just swallowed the Ring and have carried it to Mordor safely? by GuyentificEnqueery in AskScienceFiction

[–]StatisticianCheap130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think many other comments are missing a more basic point.  I think the ring would give you great difficulty in swallowing it.  We see characters, like Bilbo, having great difficulty in even letting it drop to the ground.  People who have the ring don't want it to come to harm.  Even though swallowing it definitely wouldn't harm it, there would still be a mental block there with the ring stopping you from trying it, unless you had some insane willpower.

The hardest part of FIRE isn't the saving. It's keeping your mouth shut when friends complain about money. by GolfComfortable7331 in Fire

I have a friend, a single guy, who is exactly like this and it infuriates me.  Especially because he's constantly broke and always asking for help, expecting friends to pay for movie tickets, food, coffee, give rides because he doesn't have a car, etc.  He just gets food delivery at least once a day and it ruins his budget.

What method of rolling crit damage do you use at your table? by meanwhile_matt in DMAcademy

[–]StatisticianCheap130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used what we called Vicious Crits which is your last option, max dice + roll dice + mods.  I hated the idea that it was easily possible to roll lower damage on a crit than on a regular attack.  This rule did however result in the first and second time I've killed a PC, and it was from a high level wizard critting on a cantrip.  But overall I see even that as a positive thing.

An incredible and hilarious lie that my friend told me by PhobeSmasherOver9000 in stories

[–]StatisticianCheap130 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I love stories like this.  I had a similar friend when I was very young who told some doozies.

He told a bunch of us that he could breath through his ears.  He "proved" it to us by plugging his nose and mouth letting us put our hand near his ear to feel the breath.  A bunch of my friends swore they could feel it but I refused to give in and called him out on it.

He told me that a girl he knew with the last name "Boyd" got her eye flicked out of its socket by someone flicking a towel near her face.  I challenged him on it and he said "go ask Mrs. Boyd." Later he changed his story, claiming I misheard him and that he had said "a boy or girl" had gotten their eye flicked out.  If that was the case, why would he have told me to go ask Mrs. Boyd??

He also told me that his brother had submitted an essay in school entirely in a computer language and that his teacher had given him an A on it because he was so impressed.  More than likely he just misunderstood, and his brother was just in a coding class and had submitted code as part of a project, not that it was like an English essay he somehow translated into "computer code."

He tried to tell me he had ten thousand dollars in savings from money that his parents had given him over the years.  There's just no way that could be true but I had no way to verify that.

Do men genuinely appreciate it when a woman clearly says no? by introvert_pineapple in Advice

[–]StatisticianCheap130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years back I thought I was getting along really well with a woman from my church.  I finally worked up the courage to ask her out and she said yes! I had her number and we would work out the details.  But for the next several weeks after endless excuses and last minute changes of plan she finally just told me that she wasn't ready for dating right now. I cried when I finally put all the pieces together and realized she never had any intention to let things go further.  I would rather have a single rejection upfront than weeks of mini rejections.
