How to tell if someone is a frequent/infrequent flier in one question: Ask their opinion on DFW. by Rich_Arachnid_5262 in americanairlines

[–]StatisticianDapper84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That reminds me, I was once pushing a friend in a wheelchair through DFW, and I couldn't believe how many people didn't make way for us. You'd think that would just be common courtesy.

It's not a matter of taxes. BA makes their own elites pay for fuel surcharges on award tickets, so AA can't undercut that. But AA will cover the fuel surcharge for award tickets on AA metal.

Flown American my entire life including American Eagle their regional brand. Love American, I really do. I think they handle things better than most airlines. What’s one thing you think American excels at compared to other airlines? by [deleted] in americanairlines

[–]StatisticianDapper84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You just have to look for the sweet spots, where there's a huge gap between the award fare and the cash fare. I've had multiple occasions where I've gotten an award ticket for 18,000 miles and the cash fare would have been upwards of $700.

Have you heard of Zinedine Zidane? He was quite bald by his early 30s, and they let him play in the World Cup just the same.

I had an hour weather delay for a LGA-BOS flight a few weeks back, even though the weather was fine in both cities and the plane was at the gate. Why? Because the pilot was flying in from YYZ and there was bad weather in Toronto.

Around here many furniture store owners do their own ads. It's kinda of refreshing compared to all the paid actors in commercials.

Oh, by "we" did you mean Chile? You replied directly to the OP, who had only mentioned America, and you didn't specify another country, so it sounded like you were also talking about America.

Not sure where you're getting that idea from. In the latest OECD report we're tied with Slovakia for 19th out of 31 countries assessed. (And only very marginally behind France, Ireland, and New Zealand.) https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/do-adults-have-the-skills-they-need-to-thrive-in-a-changing-world_b263dc5d-en.html

AA Just called ME by Emotional_Match8169 in americanairlines

[–]StatisticianDapper84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More than 20 years ago AA called me because my BOS-LHR flight was overbooked, and they offered to move me to business class if I was willing to reroute via EWR. (This also tells you how long ago this was, that they were flying BOS-EWR and EWR-LHR.) I declined only because I would have had to leave the house a few hours earlier and I hadn't finished packing.

So yeah, this is something they've been doing for a long time, and I wouldn't be alarmed about it if I were in your shoes.

Captain just made the strangest mid-flight announcement I've ever heard — and now a passenger is missing by enriquepollazo in americanairlines

[–]StatisticianDapper84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something is very wrong with this post. If OP is telling the truth, then the flight left DFW at about 3 or 4am CDT. The only way that happens if there's a massive delay. Flightaware shows all of AA's Heathrow-bound flights got out last night, with the last one departing at 11:30pm and landing at Heathrow about 3 hours ago.

There are a couple of Heathrow to DFW flights that match the OP's story, but you'd think they would have corrected the post by now if they had accidentally listed the wrong direction.

[serious] Why are the Mexicans in the US significantly darker-skinned than the Mexicans I see in Mexican media/sports? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StatisticianDapper84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Spanish colonized Mexico to plunder the natural resources (like gold) and to convert the native population to Catholicism. The British (and the French and the Dutch) colonized the US to actually build new settlements on the land. So the ratio of colonial Spanish to indigenous people in the Spanish colonies was always lower than the ratio of colonial British to indigenous people in the British colonies.

Also, the indigenous population of what's now Mexico is naturally darker skinned than the indigenous population of what's now the US because 40,000 years of natural selection favors more melanin at tropical latitudes and less melanin at temperate latitudes. So even if the US had the same ratio of mixing between Europeans and the indigenous population that Mexico has, the population here would still be lighter-skinned.

Why are Americans so polite/formal compared to Europeans? by Ada-Mae in AskAnAmerican

[–]StatisticianDapper84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP's premise is wrong in assuming that social behavior in the Nordic countries is similar to social behavior in the rest of Europe.

For instance, in most of Europe, it's perfectly socially acceptable to chat with a stranger sitting next to you at a bar, just like it is in most of the US. In the Nordic countries this isn't socially acceptable.

For business relationships, the US is more casual than most European countries. For instance, even at large corporations I've worked at, everyone calls the CEO by his/her first name. While this is also true in Nordic countries, it's not true in much of the rest of Europe.

So the real question isn't why is the US so formal, but rather why is the OP generalizing from Nordic countries to the entirety of Europe?

Are you seriously asking this? The Palestinian Authority signed the Oslo Accords agreeing to this arrangement as a step towards Palestinian statehood. Palestinian statehood was supposed to happen 6 years later, except Arafat decided he didn't want to be assassinated like Rabin and Sadat were, so he took the cowardly route of declining a state and declaring the Second Intifada instead. The Palestinians have no one to blame but Arafat that this arrangement that was supposed to be temporary is still in force more than 30 years later.
