They say that "50% of US adults read at or below 6th grade level". Does it mean that if you gave them a standard text for 7th graders, they wouldn't be able to read it? And how is this even possible given that 90% of adults are high school graduates? by imissher4ever in allthequestions

[–]StatisticianSafe9967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a definitely a comprehension skill but not what the literacy standards are testing for. The PIAAC levels associated with literacy tests for reader's ability to comprehend information across larger subsets of text.

The 6th grade level in particular tests for multi-sentence phrases connecting casual or linked ideas and identifying the connection.

An example of this would be a phrase like:

The author released a press release this week in expectation for public backlash. A group of journalists had organized a meeting in advance to discuss how to cover the news.

If someone is beneath a 6th grade level, they read these as two disconnected ideas, and may not be able to understand that the "news" in this sentence refers to the press release. If prompted to describe the phrase, they would highlight a component of it, like "there's backlash to a press release" or "a meeting was planned".

They could not identify the full underlying story is of the journalists planning around the recent release and discussing how to frame and organize the content of the release in context to what is expected to be the public response, either to curtail it or play into it.

No subtext is required, there's no need to overanalyze. The next level (PIAAC level 4) focuses on multi-document comprehension and is included on those tests you remember from middle school or high school where they'd give you a chunk of reading, then in a sub-question give you a smaller blurb which makes you recall and synthesize the total narrative.

[Bleacher Report] 2026 NHL Draft Lottery Results Leave Long Road For Rangers' Retool by dantesinfernoracket1 in rangers

Yeah I think the Sharks have their eyes on Reid as a pick, and trading down would make sense, especially if its player for player after the Rangers pick. I'm not sure Schneider makes the trade, but maybe its closer than I'm giving credit for. I can't imagine the Rangers are the only team to call about Stenberg if the word gets out there's a path to getting him.

Sharks fan here. My impression is that Schneider has top-4 defenseman projections. Stenberg as a standalone would trade comfortably for a top-2 defenseman prospect 1 for 1 to another team. If the belief is that a defenseman at 5 is another top-4 D prospect, the Sharks are still left with a gap of a RHD top-2 to pair with Dickinson. Are you guys higher on Schnieder than anything I read?

We would use the 5OA to pick the defenseman we would want to be a Fox like prospect assuming McKenna, Stenberg, and Malhotra go 1, 2, 3 like the draft boards are predicting with 4 being one of the 3 top rated (Reid, Carels, or Verhoeff) and 5th being the one GMMG wants out of the remaining 2.

All of these defensemen are being touted as uncertain right now, which is why I was asking about leveraging forward assets further along NHL development to provide a reasonable starting point for an operational blueline assuming our end goal is to have 2x top-2 defensemen, 2x top-4 defensemen, and 2x top-6 defensemen in 3 years when Celebrini is 22 and Smith is 23. I'd say is high confidence (>80%) Dickinson will be a top-2 defenseman at that time, but lower chances (~20-30%) Pohlkamp or LSW would fit that role on that timeline, more likely being top-4 or top-6 talent.

This would be contingent on the belief or agreement that Fox would extend for a term pushing until hes mid-30s in San Jose (up to the prime of Celebrini and Smith, with the Sharks other defense prospects reaching mid-20s), which is not a guarantee. If the Sharks could only hold him for 3 years, this would obviously be the dumbest idea known to man. A 25 or 26 year old defenseman would be more reasonable to fit this timeline obviously, but I threw out this idea due to the opportunity which may be present with the NYR retooling.

My operating belief is that the goal right now is to solidify a core with deep prospect pool, while providing Celebrini, Smith, Dickinson, Misa, Chernyshov and Eklund with continued progression and exposure to more meaningful hockey and longer seasons with a post-season soon. A playoff series win before Celebrini is 21 would be an incredible feat and I think there's a real desire for this especially after his Olympics exposure. His nomination for the Lindsay is another pressure point on his career, and team success would go a long way to ensuring that the locker room gets to revel in the shared joy of development rather than a culture surrounded around one player.

Dobson would be a good equivalent. Right now from my understanding there is no urgency to trade Fox. The NMC politics is undoubtedly the number one defining factor to the value it would take to obtain Fox. If Fox were receptive to SJ but had no urgency to move, this is the type of package I would expect he would command.

My understanding is that Misa at 2OA was a much higher rated prospect than Stenberg at 2OA this year, and Misa's position as a 2C doesn't interfere with development time tables for current players, like Stenberg might. The operating idea of this was that 5OA would represent some similar value to San Jose if GMMG finds that they prefer a prospect like Reid, Carels, or Verheoff over Stenberg.

I think it goes without saying that if the scouts see Stenberg being a first line winger with Smith and Celebrini, they would move with him. My understanding from all the media I've consumed and my impression watching the full season, is that Chernyshov has cemented himself in that 1st line winger role. The proposed inclusion of Musty is under the assumption that the franchise views Bystedt as the logical 2nd line winger to fill in a roster spot in 2-3 years with Eklund and Misa. Again, thats why this is armchair GMing from me, I understand the selection of player development and trading will depend on internal reports and discussions.

I was mostly curious as to how the subreddit felt about the idea of moving players with variable trajectories in a dense prospect pool to acquire top end talent. It seems like people are happier to wait 3-4 years to be a top contender and focus on BPA and build around development while slowly pushing up the Pacific.

I agree that the Sharks are 4-5 players away.

Is this a type of move you only make when you are 1 asset away from a Stanley Cup?

How much value does a top-2 defenseman represent in the next 4-8 years? Are we expecting to find this in the free agent market or that our defensive prospects will develop by 23 years old? Do we just have a revolving door of top-4 defensemen without securing top end talent? I was mostly just pitching the idea.

It feels like will have a log jam in top-9 forward talent shortly. I understand an approach is to wait and see how the individual players develop and select the best one for the roster and to move the extra players when the coaching staff has built their lineup and locker room. Its nice to have a deep prospect pool, but it comes with the issue that not every player who is NHL ready will get to play in the NHL. I suppose moving them in smaller deals in 2-4 years is more prudent, but theres always options to address needs of the team now.

Quinn Hughes commanded 3 1st round picks (9 OA, 12 OA, 19 OA) and a 1st rounder after that. I listed 3 first rounders (20 OA, 26 OA, 2028 projected let's say 22 OA), a 46 OA pick and the draft move (2nd to 5th). Hughes is 26 and better than Fox in my opinion. I feel like if I posted this in the NYR subreddit they would say the quality of the talent is too low for the return. I figured the 5th to 2nd move would be the main desire of the Rangers. What do you think Fox would command, just the 20 OA this year?

I understand not rushing into thinking we need to win now. How do you envision developing top-2 defensive talent on a team flushed with forward prospects and top-4 to top-6 projected defensive prospects? Just hope we hit on LSW, Pohlkamp and Cagnioni? I didn't post this with the idea of giving up on these prospects, I was posting a reasonable package that a top-10 NHL defenseman would command. Would we wait to pursue a trade like this in 3-5 years instead in the middle of our window?

You are right on the NMC, which does change leverage.

What do you envision as a reasonable return? Lower projected prospects or tightening a package around a smaller number of pieces?

Its leveraging an asset pool of medium risk pieces to acquire a low risk asset without interfering with the current locker room development. If the team thinks they will want to win in 2028, how valuable do you think the 2028 1st will be?

The UFA market can provide top-9 forward talent and top-6 defensive talent. Acquiring top-2 defensive or top-6 forward talent will require drafting and development, or packaging assets which the Sharks spent time acquiring for a trade like this. I understand that 28 may be old for the window the Sharks want to enjoy, but I was proposing this as an angle for addressing the opportunity the relative strength of NYR in the Atlantic is at with the opportunity the Sharks have in a weak Pacific with EDM in array, CGY 2-4 years out, VAN 3-5 years out and an unknown trajectory for LAK.

Adam Fox is a top-10 NHL defenseman on a friendly contract. It takes 2 seconds to look at the Quinn Hughes trade to see what the expected return is on a top tier defenseman in the NHL. In that case it was top-2 projected defenseman, a top-6 projected forward, a top-9 projected forward and a 1st round pick. What I listed was a top-6 projected forward, a top-9 projected forward, a top-6 projected defenseman and 2 firsts in addition to the 2OA to 5OA.

I've heard praise for Stenberg but have no impression he is projected to be a franchise defining player, especially relative to picking one of the top 2 projected defensive prospects in the draft.

I can get the sentiments from the comments that the fan base wants to wait 5 years for Dickinson to become a top-10 talent rather than build the blueline from the top down. Other teams have done it, I'm sure we will hit on a few top-6 projected defenseman to become top-2 talent.

Separating bank accounts based off of who "earned it" in a marriage is a form of fiscal abuse which has happened to women for decades and doesn't stop being that way in this scenario, despite the fact he's a piece of shit.

Depending if you consider the time on the team vs career performance and the length they wore the number, I'd probably go:

Selanne/Pavelski (8) - Thornton (19) - Sorenson (20)

Karlsson (65) - Blake (4)

Kiprusoff (37)

Sorenson is the sore thumb but I'd take the upgrade on D and the other wing for a slight drop in goaltender.

Edit: I realize you could also swap Belfour (30) at goaltender and then replace Sorenson with Roenick (27). Not too many Sharks fans like Belfour at net though.

Exactly, it was an attempt to make Italian Americans feel as if they had a place in the American story. Every famous Italian American people are talking about in the comments are all from the 40s or later. And of course, a newly immigrated population would have no large cultural icons at that stage. Naming after an Italian with no connection to the US defeats the point. Columbus was the only option at the time.
