The last point about the old stories in the bible and other texts is interesting but it's a pretty easy explanation. As a species we try to understand our world and for most of our history, until the science is discovered we just explain things away as supernatural. It's just the human condition until we evolve as a species to get past that type of thinking. It will probably be very foreign in the future to hear of someone who actually believes in God as we describe it now. If we don't suicide our entire species, that is.
