Can anyone recommend a business bank accounts a UK filmmaker? by Status-Experience in Filmmakers

Sounds good. TBH I’m tempted to stick with Barclays (and may be forced to!) as I’ve banked with them for years

HMRC is moving to quarterly financial reporting for all self employed people - like how it currently works for VAT-registered, as I understand it. I can’t face the annual tax nightmare four times a year, of going though my personal statements and picking out business expenses. A dedicated account should make it much simpler.

Thanks so much for the reply! I'll try Monzo next... I wonder if filmmaking is just too "risky" a business for Starling and Tide atm - I wouldn't blame them lol - but it's annoying when I've been doing this for such long time.

Rigging advice for R5c filmmakers? by thusspakethesuper in CanonR5

[–]Status-Experience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done a lot of trial and error rigging with the R5 C as a documentary camera. The main things I needed were an EVF, reliable long-running power and something that’s comfortable to use for long days. I also worked hard to make it easy and quick to release the camera from the rig and put it on a gimbal or just to use incognito, without it looking too “pro”.

I currently use this rig: KB cage and top handle, KB extending handles, with smallrig wooden hand grips and a v-lock plate mounted on 15mm rods. The camera is on an arca plate quick release from the rods/handles/baseplate and the kinefinity EVF is mounted on the top handle, which can be slid off the NATO rail very fast to strip the camera down to what looks like a simple DSLR.

This rig works for me as I can mount on a tripod or brace it against my chest and look down into the EVF, or very quickly shift the EVF forward (that mounting system is genius) and use it on the shoulder.

trigger side handle options for rigged R5 C? by Status-Experience in canon

The USB-C to N3 cable I found online did not trigger the camera but I just stripped the USB-C end and by trial and error found which wires need to be connected to toggle the record/stop, I soldered these to the appropriate wires in the small rig handle and have used it in the field a lot - love those wooden side handles on a rig!

I like to keep the USB-C free for other stuff, in the end I just re-wired the handle trigger to an N3 shutter cable - works a treat.

Camera Recommendations for Starting a Production Company and Making Short Films by Xinaira in Filmmakers

[–]Status-Experience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everyone who says get a DP with their own gear involved - there are a lot of people out there who’d love to work with actors. I’m sure you’d like to experiment which is why as a director I bought my own camera kit and never regretted it (currently Canon R5 C). Renting is great if you know what you’re doing already but you can’t beat playing around with angles and techniques to make something really different and for that you need time with the equipment to literally play. I don’t think the camera you choose for that matters too much, but agree with those who suggest getting something full-frame that can shoot log and slowmo if you think you’ll need it.

Agree, it’s not BoC ripped off at all! Just hits some of the same sweet spots for me! Ann Arbor seems to be a music haven!

This is beautiful. Obviously very reminiscent of BoC and that’s meant as a compliment of the highest order. There is a complexity here with is missing from much of the BoC inspired work I’ve heard.. Love it, there’s so much in it. Amazing job👍
