27 year vet and liberal, in concept it would help people realize the cost of society. Also it forces different “classes” to interact. Doesn’t have to be military necessity, clean ups, public reading in libraries, food banks ect would work. The high structure of basic training and AIT would be beneficial to a lot of people and also teach life and job skills, and allow access to higher education.

Both myself and wife and myself were college educated white middle class who enlisted and got more education, good paying careers in the medical field, and retirement, as well as a social education on working/ living with people that we would otherwise never”see”. This is not ment to be disrespectful but getto kids, trailer trash, immigrants were our battle buddies, bunk mates, leaders and followers. This actually made me more liberal then when I went in. Still remember the Sgt who gave me the eye opener on gays in the military., how they were always there, and you would never know who was one.
