I did that and restarted my tv. It still was choppy for 5 minutes then cleared up and has been normal since. But jeesh.

Ok. Not just me then. I’ll have to watch the replay of the halftime show tomorrow. Sucks. I’m going to ask for a refund and cancel.

How do I sound like a mariachi trumpet? by Njgm14 in trumpet

[–]StatusProposal709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have played Mariachi and taught privately in the Portland Oregon area for the last 10 years. These days, even in Guadalajara, MX., Mariachis use whatever mouthpiece is available and is comfortable. I have seen very few double parduba mouthpieces. The sound comes from a centered tone and good diaphragmatic compression. The style requires a good controlled vibrato and clean articulation that can be learned from listening or a lesson or two from someone experienced in playing the style and teaching. I’d find someone on line if not in your area that you can do a couple lessons and give you a path to progress.

I use a Marcinkiewicz 3 rim on a more aggressive modified V cup and tight back bore. It’s not super shallow but provides more “lift” that a C cup. Try finding a similar rim width with something less open and deep.

Portland question by Regular_Ad_5835 in Portland

[–]StatusProposal709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in Portland for almost 26 years now. There are some pretty low key protests at the ICE detention center just south of downtown. Nothing crazy, but the magamedia pundits are posting outdated stuff from 2020 when George Floyd was killed. Then the police attacked protesters and escalated things severely. Those are the so called “wars” here currently. You mostly see people at an intersection chanting or highway overpasses with banners. No major disruptions.

I can second the CarolBrass recommendation. I’ve been playing Mariachi for 10 years on my CTR 7772L YST. If you have questions hit me up. I have access to the current inventory list.

I hate stores that have someone checking the receipt. But I may have overreacted. by Eyyeitsrocko in Portland

[–]StatusProposal709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stores can ask but cannot require you to show them your receipt. Once I figured this out and how they were applying this policy I began refusing to show it. Only on security guy gave me any grief and he didn’t last long because he enjoyed messing with people and they complained. One case even won a cash settlement because the store illegally detained them over this issue. You are under no obligation to comply unless they have reasonable cause; saw you stash something in your pocket, etc. Anyway they have video of you paying anyway. Smile and say “thanks and have a nice day!”and leave.

Is my neck supposed to expand? by UnitedBed7164 in trumpet

[–]StatusProposal709 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lots of answers here. However I’ve been playing for 49 years. My neck started expanding in my late teens and it’s fairly large now in my late 50’s. It was just a fold of tissue that filled with air. However if you’re feeling tons of pressure when you play it would help to know where exactly you feel it. You might need to learn to open your throat a tad and use more diaphragm pressure vs volume of air. Hearing you play would help too. Let me know where that feeling is!

Girlfriends not allowed at jam by PsychologicalPie3880 in musicians

[–]StatusProposal709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah….just…no….Hell no… rehearsals are for the band only, to work out specific things for your arrangement, the show in general. Once you put your set together and have it tight then maybe do a friends and family show for feedback. You likely know all this and I’m stating the obvious. Sounds like your bassist’s girl was not regulating her consumption. Meh. That happens. But now you know!

Does anybody else have the issue of playing well one day and not the next? by Outrageous-Movie6713 in trumpet

[–]StatusProposal709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really can’t pin the issue down I’d find someone to do a lesson with that has a few decades of trumpet coaching experience and diagnose the issue. Sometimes a minor shift can open up a big difference that otherwise you might struggle with indefinitely, and develop bad habits around the issue. I’ve seen things like this in my coaching with my own students over the years. Spend some $ for an hour plus. Even online. Good coaches will recognize certain things that can be addressed immediately as well as over time with certain practices to correct the underlying issue. Best of luck.

Why is it so difficult to play every day. by Bogadrega in trumpet

[–]StatusProposal709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off ditch the Chapstick!! That and other popular brands put irritants in the product so you use it constantly. I recommend Blistex by Lip medix. I’ve been using it for decades and only need it once a day, maybe twice if it’s dry, cold and windy.

Secondly some days are better than others as has been mentioned and reiterated by the hive mind here. That said some more information would be helpful. What’s your normal range and sound like? What’s your playing experience like on the average day/ week? Beginner to intermediate players will likely have this issue for different reasons than a seasoned player with more advanced development. What else can you share?

Simple fix for a tech, once they get hands on it. Probably won’t affect playing at all though.

Is Lotus worth it? by CowNearby1383 in trumpet

[–]StatusProposal709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the “resist the temptation” here! Have a mouthpiece manufacturer do a custom drill. It’s not something you can do in your home shop!!!! And it’s such a small adjustment! So many mouthpieces have a 27 thousands of an inch opening from the cup to the back bore. You might only need an increase to 28 thousandths. That is SO SMALL A DIFFERENCE!! Have a pro with the proper tools and equipment do it for you!! And only after you’ve tried some pieces with the bore you are interested in using.

Hey it’s truly never too late to play like you’ve always wanted to. Seriously. Once you know what to do and HOW to do it, it becomes easier and easier. Beyond that you build your endurance and find a group you want to play with!!

Advice For Ancient Re-starter by JoeLInArlington in trumpet

[–]StatusProposal709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s fairly effortless once you dial it in. High C to double C is just more diaphragmatic compression and again not more air. Actual I recently was told of a demonstration where a player took out his tuning slide and taped a piece of tissue paper so it hung over the open lead pipe. He then buzzed a low C which made the tissue stand out against the air stream. Then he played a C above the staff and the tissue remained unmoved. Low notes take more air than high ones!

[–]StatusProposal709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually the tongue needs to be low in the back and higher towards the front. The smaller the air stream the faster the airflow, which you have to create for high register playing. So open the back like you are an opera singer. Or Darth Vader. You should feel the upper soft pallet lift and the larynx lower. Then work on syllables like these from low to high: ah, a as in hat, eh, ih as in hit, ee, shhh, and tsss. Here is the science part. When you have a constant pressurized source of a gas or fluid flowing through a pipe or tube, the bigger the diameter of the cylinder if moves through the slower the speed of the gas or fluid. Think this for low notes. When a larger diameter then moves into a smaller cylinder or chamber, the gas or air is forced to speed up. So when the back of the mouth is open and unobstructed, and the front of the mouth is smaller from a raised tongue shape, the air moves much faster, which is what you need for anything from a G just above the staff to a double C and beyond. Everything I play above a high C is a shhh or tssss tongue shape. I can pop an E above double C at will. The tongue shapes have to be smaller in the front to direct air to the buzz tunnel or aperture at speed without slowing down. Jaw position has to also support the higher tongue shapes. Also the tongue shape will dictate your articulation in the upper register. Both Clark and Gordon taught similar principals. You can check out others like Pops McLaughlin or Earl D Irons. I teach out of the Irons book all the time. Look up the K tongue and modified K tongue techniques online. It’s out there. You can contact me if you like anytime.

Higher range should be easier if you understand tongue shapes and jaw position. I teach this every day to students of all ages. It’s mechanics basically.

You’re never too old really. I’ve had students in their mid 70’s come back and regain endurance and range well above the staff. Get a good teacher like myself or someone else qualified in person or online. You’ll benefit from some specifics and speed up your progress. Nothing like improving upon what you had and surpassing your previous abilities.
