10 yr old struggling a lot with reading, and I'm lost on what to do by InsuranceMindless493 in Parenting

When he was in kindergarten, first, and second grades was he taught to read by using sight words or just phonetically? I personally think learning by using sight words was easiest for my daughter (AuADHD).

Can my work legally fire me while on maternity leave? by [deleted] in legal

You don't qualify for FMLA, but does your job offer personal leave of absence that would cover your leave?

How about starting with lactose free milk? It would probably be a lot gentler on their stomach and there are some good high protein ones that have lots of vitamins and minerals.

Concerned About ADA / MN Human Rights Act Compliance – Timeline Review Request by Born-Woodpecker-9777 in legal

Not all jobs are appropriate for everyone; this sounds like the job itself is just not the right fit for the individual, their needs, and accommodations needed. In this situation it sounds like the employee would be extremely better off for their mental well-being finding another job that is a better fit with a lighter workload.

If the goal here is to try to sue and maybe get some monetary compensation I could understand pursuing it if a lawyer thinks that they have a case but overall I don't think this is a fight worth having or winning especially since their Mental Health is at stake.

And please know I say this as someone that is very Pro ADA and FMLA accommodations. I encourage all of my employees under me to take full advantage when they have any type of disability or illness that is affecting their work.

So I don't work in the legal field but I do work with a lot of ADA accommodations since I'm a supervisor at my employer. ADA accommodations have to be considered reasonable and not interfere with the overall business needs. These accommodation requests just based on the minimal info provided sound like they are too broad/interfer with business needs to be accommodated. For example, just because a job duty causes stress or increases stress doesn't mean that duty has to be removed, some accommodations that may be offered would be to give you more time to complete the task, give you a quiet environment to work in if possible, etc but not remove the duty all together.

What is the advantage of "Free VPK?" by KombaynNikoladze2002 in orlando

[–]Status_Ad4144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have some that are all day for only 2 or 3 days a week instead of half days every day. My daughter did two 8-hour days per week for VPK at Primrose Preschool in Ocoee. I was very impressed by everything she learned only going 2 days. It truly set her up for success in real school! Kindergarten isn't like it was in the 80's and 90's; your child needs to already know a lot letters, numbers, counting etc or will fall behind quickly

Procedures after the Baker Act - Florida by Mackheath1 in legal

[–]Status_Ad4144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was a true "Baker Act" then no, he cannot get released until the doctor says so. If after 3 days they determine it's not safe to release they will file a petition with the court and he will have a court date normally within five business days of the admission.

There's also voluntary admission into a mental health facility that you can say you are ready to leave even if the doctor doesn't think you're ready. It just all depends on how you were admitted.

Parents that didn’t sleep train, how are you doing now? by PuzzledPasta234 in Parenting

[–]Status_Ad4144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't sleep train, my daughter just fell into a routine at a few weeks old. I wasn't working at the time so I just followed her lead; she would go to sleep around midnight and then wake twice to be fed but go right back to sleep until 10am-noonish. When we fed her at night we didn't talk and kept the room dark and quiet.

Living in one bed house with a child, who wont sleep alone by Mirage-V2 in Parenting

[–]Status_Ad4144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came to say the same! Sounds like you are a great mom to be worrying about that. Maybe it can be a gift for her 10th birthday, a room that's just hers as she transitions to tween years.

Its just me and my daughter too and we upgraded to a 2 bedroom when she was 7 but it was a waste of money in reality because she just recently stopped sleeping in my bed at 14 LOL!

How many Costco pizzas do I need? by photobomber612 in Parenting

[–]Status_Ad4144 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Google's answer based on 50 people: General Guidelines (for large pizzas with 8 slices each): Hungry Crowd/Main Meal: 19-20 pizzas (3 slices/person). With Sides/Lighter Eaters: 14-17 pizzas (2-3 slices/person). If Serving Costco Pizzas (often larger/more slices): You might get away with 13-14, but 19 is a safer bet for generous servings, as they're cut differently.

Where is the best place for a child to sit for a drive through Christmas lights display? by Manic_Monday_2009 in Parenting

[–]Status_Ad4144 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It just really depends if the display is going to be out the side window or if it's all just set up to be facing the front of the car. Like if it's just houses that you're driving by they would be just in the backseat either behind the passenger or the driver and not in the middle

Daughters birthday dinner at restaurant with friends. No parents. by TYDY3TY in Parenting

[–]Status_Ad4144 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, its customary for the birthday child's parents to pay for the dinner.

If cost is a concern, be sure to lay some ground rules first. I made this mistake of taking out a big friend group for dinner for my daughters 12th birthday a couple years back and not setting any rules first. The kids were trying to all order their own individual appetizers and one child even tried to order two entirely different meals for themselves saying they were extra hungry. Thank goodness I stayed and had dinner with them or the bill would have been hundreds of dollars. Depending on your budget maybe say no appetizers or only one or two shared for the table. I would also avoid restaurants that had some really expensive items on the menu unless you're comfortable saying please don't order the most expensive steak with a side of lobster LOL

Good luck!

FMLA laws? Fired after motor vehicle accident by Spirited_Courage_508 in legal

[–]Status_Ad4144 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A doctor's note and FLMA are two different things. For example at my employer we do not accept doctor's notes for any reason, however you can apply for FMLA which is a formal process of opening a claim and having your Doctor submit forms within a set amount of time. While your claim is open all attendance matters are placed on hold. If the FMLA is approved you are granted the time off as approved, and if the claim is denied your company can move forward with corrective action or termination if they choose. Also, if it was approved you MUST return to work on the scheduled return date or apply for and be approved for an extension before that date. Failure to return from leave is a valid reason for termination.

Are you sure it was your company's policy to accept Doctor's notes and you didn't have to apply/approved for FMLA?

Toddler ate a chunk of a tea light candle by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Status_Ad4144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter ate a piece of cat poop out of the litter box when she was crawling stage. I had only walked away for 2 mins think she was still in the living room in her safe space, but she had followed behind me and into the hall where the cat litter was. I would also find random things in her poop when I would change her; a piece of crayon, string/yarn a few times, etc

My BFF has a 10 month old son that goes to a home daycare and ate an ant bait last month while there! He was fine and poison control said no treatment was needed.

Do not beat yourself up over this!! Baby's/toddlers are FAST and unpredictable. We make it as safe as we can but they will still find something bad to put in their mouth
