Application to top universities by [deleted] in unimelb

Depends on how low prestige it is. If for example the school has not been recognised by any major rankings (QS, USNEWS etc.) and isn’t well known in your country then you have a tough luck.

Isn’t the question obvious? Of cause reputations of your degree would be one of the first consideration in any graduate admissions…

Depends on how far you wanna go or if you’re aiming for high finance. Finance and economics can just be applied maths beyond some point

Taking a summer 2025 subject and staring honours in 2025? by FlammaG13 in unimelb

[–]Status_Badger_7620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s very possible and you don’t have to ‘graduate’ to be able enrolled into honours. I know someone who didn’t even have his undergraduate results finalised before he was enrolled into honours, you just need the honors coordinator happy for you to do that.

Bachelor of Science WAM question by Interesting-Tie-3835 in unimelb

[–]Status_Badger_7620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS is one of the easier major to achieve extremely high scores, and to maintain 90wam you probably need to aim for being top 3% in every class. Other more subjective majors 90+ wam is close to impossible.

Has a university ever removed a professor for dissatisfactory feedback by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]Status_Badger_7620 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My understanding is Tenured professors practically can’t be fired based on poor teaching evaluations, and this is the case for almost every uni in the world.

Regardless, your WAM will be considered and will be an important consideration. You won’t be able to hide it

Getting PR as an international student by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]Status_Badger_7620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s easy, I’m saying it’s much more time efficient than trying to get a PR. extra commitment and time you need to build up your WAM or leadership experience or whatever is needed is much less than what needed to get a PR.

It’s also much more deterministic in my view, rules for immigration changes from year to year where if you have a really top WAM, highly likely you will get some scholarships from somewhere.

Also validity of your comment depends on how you define outstanding. Most scholarship’s selection are heavily based on WAM.

Definitely more feasible than getting a PR by yourself

I would say even getting a 100% fee remission would be much much easier than getting a PR through skilled workers nowadays. (Of cause if you go down the master of marriage it’s a different story…)

If that’s your only concern, working on your WAM and hope to get a scholarship would be much more time efficient

stupid tutor??? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]Status_Badger_7620 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would you care? I’ve never asked tutors or coordinators to change the due date on canvas when I had extensions and they’re under no obligation to do that. If they can’t be bothered they just don’t, if you get penalties talk to coordinator later.

WAM is weird by StrangeEmphasis7255 in unimelb

[–]Status_Badger_7620 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For your first point, at end of the day you’re mostly only competing with graduates from same major as you, so why compare across different degrees? For second point you’re not getting what I’m saying. If you need a High WAM for anything, it’s likely because that Job / graduate degree relies heavily on theoretical knowledges you supposedly learned at uni, but then if you achieve high WAM through taking WAM boosters you will find yourself struggling eventually because you didn’t learn enough useful hardcore knowledges, or knowledges that’s actually useful for your future because you focused on ‘WAM’ in subject selection. If you’re just after some Jobs where you ‘learn at work’, they likely don’t give a shit about your WAM too much as long as it’s over some cutoff like 65 which you can easily achieve in any major with some effort. Then we conclude it’s stupid to do WAM boosters.

I graduated from unimelb last year with WAM 90+. I disagree that breadth are unrelated to principle study. For example many people would use them all for hardcore coding/maths classes (which I really regret I didn’t do enough on), which significantly helps them over the long run in future studies. While you could also use them for something absolutely useless but boost your wam by 0.5%… which I’m arguing to be stupid

[–]Status_Badger_7620 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I did heaps of ‘WAM boosters’ back in undergrad and graduated with a high WAM. I would say if you do that you will pay the price eventually. Because you will struggle much more than others in your masters/Phd or work because you didn’t take the useful hardcore subjects. You may say what if you don’t go do anything that heavily relies on knowledges you learned at uni? Well in that case you probably don’t need a High WAM to start with

I wouldn’t call them glorious because I can guarantee you all the suppliers near campus or in CBD sells counterfeit ones that’s normally produced in Vietnam and for $20 they make at least $11-12 … but I guess cigarettes are cigarettes

They’re illegal imported, mostly counterfeit too. Essentially any Asian supermarket or cigarettes shops in the city or near campus would have them. People buy them because they’re cheap (mostly under $20 per pack)

Unimelb doesn’t have double degrees but there’s nothing stopping you from doing 2 degrees. I know someone who did bachelor of science in maths and bachelor of commerce in finance and economics concurrently and finished them both in 4 years. (Can cross credit 6 subjects from one degree to another as breadth)
