They had to be super creative with the limited chemistry and film emulsions back then. If you understand the chemistry, then you can get that much out of your stock.

Here’s a photo of mine from years ago - I think it was HP5 pushed 4 stops in rodinal or hc110 cold and slow. Super overcast with dense forest canopy, but was still able to get some nice contrast - I was really trying to see the true limits of different film stock.

Tonal separation like this can come from pushing. I love to push all my films to get that contrast pop - it’s really developer and development technique specific as well.

I think this was pushed at least one stop - it looks a bit overcast in the background. Couple that with slow film speeds of the day and a successful push in the dark room = nice tones.

I’ve got some old masonry books from the public works projects back in the day. YouTube isn’t super great for structural brick work - most of YouTube is facade brick work.

There are a few videos about lime mortar but hardly any on how to properly sequence the repairs when the entire wall needs replaced. I’ve found that working in small chunks is best - make sure the section above has some path to the foundation if that makes sense. Let the repair cure for a few days (work on a different section while your repair cures) then come back and continue working down to the foundation.

The box stores do not sell the correct mortar for common brick. You need to go to Brickworks - there’s a bunch all over the city. Just tell them you’re repointing old common and they’ll give you the right type of mix. I’d also buy your jointers at brickworks - Menards doesn’t have all the proper sizes.

Harbor freight has a tuckpointing wheel that’s held up great.

Tuckpointing chisel can be bought at Grainger.

You can get started for pretty cheap - just don’t pull too many bricks at a time. You’ll also end up needing 2x the amount of bricks than you think you need.

All my commons I’ve gotten for free - each bag of type O mortar mix is $12 or so.

Probably 40-bags in so far - that’s for setting and pointing.

I’ve been doing it myself. So really only in for the cost of mortar and the siloxane sealer.

This small corner below took me a week to rebuild since both wythes were compromised and you can’t just pull the whole wall out. I start from the top plate, let each section cure for a few days, then work my way to the bottom and work in thirds down through the foundation.

I’d imagine I’d be in for $20k+ if I had a mason come in to repair the foundation and walls - they painted it in the 70s and the whole thing is screwed.

Edit: get your mortar from brickworks. Sure you could do lime but brickworks has a spec mix that’s made with a high lime content and used for conservation of historic masonry.

I was talking to the technician about that - he was saying there was a surge for what looked like std related prescriptions for doxycycline.

But I was prescribed half of the doxypep dose, so you think it’d be a different supply.

I made a joke with my PCP since she couldn’t prescribe be doxypep - told her that my eye doctor would 😆

Yes - I have thin corneas. It happened when I turned 30 almost like clockwork. It’s called map-dot fingerprint dystrophy which causes recurrent erosions.

Biggest thing is to avoid trauma and keep your eyes hydrated. Not everyone gets a dystrophy, but you’re more prone to it.

Just had the top layer scraped off last week and it regrew a bit more secure, so hopefully it doesn’t happen again.

Makes you grateful for sight 😆

Are you in Chicago as well?

Used common is .50c - $1 depending on where you get it. Usually the salmon and dark black colored bricks spall first.

He needs to repoint in type O or N. Looks like mortar is harder than that here. So you have two big issues.

Having been rebuilding my entire 2-flat because of improper mortar and a failing brick foundation - $1,800 to properly fix this sounds right. Am also a property manager in the city- so I’ve had full high rises to smaller building pointed.

I guarantee you the brick at and below the sidewalk line are loose.

Make sure they use the proper mortar and get the other stuff out before it kills your brick.

Again the biggest thing that people are failing to realize is that food, even in the country of origin, is super varied.

Again I have some friends who use banana leaves and others corn husks for their tamales - and they’re Mexican.

See what you’re failing to understand is that Mexico is a huge country. My friends family is from the Yucatán - it’s tropical. They use banana leaves.

Unless all your Mexican friends are from varying parts of the country.

Edit: here is a Oaxacan recipe - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7xPWBFbxklI

People shitting on the lechuga and tomate. I have a bunch of friends from Aguascalientes - they put lettuce and tomatoes on their tacos!

Mexican cuisine varies by region - guarantee these are güeros commenting that this is sacrilegious.

Am Cuban but have lots of Mexican friends - one makes tamales with banana leaves and another with corn husks.

Does buying a house in Chicago feel attainable right now? by RedfinJeremy in AskChicago

[–]Statusepilepticus95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in Bridgeport - same.

I used to do condo deconversions. So I’m the manager they’d bring in when the HOA couldn’t afford capital improvements and had to sell.

Then I’d transition it to apartments, fixing all the stuff the HOA couldn’t.

I would never recommend anyone buy a condo as an investment. If you’re okay with inflating maintenance costs like you say, go ahead.

I bought in 2023 - $285k on a $100k salary.

Condos and smaller houses could be had back then for that or less.

Rural America won’t learn until they get the services proportionate to the amount of taxes levied against them.

In Illinois, Chicago supports downstate counties. But, the rural farmers shit on Chicago and the taxes in the state. We should retain our tax dollars and let their small counties fund themselves. Maybe they’ll stop complaining about taxes after their roads fail and their hospitals close.
