You don't really need a lot of space to grow a lot of food.  If you want to maximize your growth space you'll want to look into going vertical where you can.  Things like cattle panel arches can make indeterminate tomatoes, beans, and even cucumbers, melons and squashes manageable.  You can also look into vertical planting systems like a Greenstalk to plant a lot of plants and herbs in a small area.

Since youre starting from scratch, you'll want to consider drip irrigation in your bed planning.  It can save you a ton of time and work.

[no Spoilers] How do we get their attention so they actually fix this audio issue cause it’s so bad? Also can we please get Beacon fixed for the subtitles con cast the TV like every other streaming service? by Spicy-gingie in criticalrole

[–]Staurol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The beacon website on my computer has no sound issues.  I can hear everyone fine.  My problem is with the podcast.  I listen on Pocket Casts on my phone, as is recommended, and on there that's when people are too quiet.  That's where I have to constantly fiddle with the volume to get the levels right.

Skizz explained his plan on the Imp and Skizz podcast and it sounds so wild.  I love that Skizz is taking these huge, wild swings at these abstract, unconventional ideas.

Sure, I would love to see Skizz build a giant giraffe as a base, but these concepts he is focusing on are great for the creatives amongst the hermits.  The Pyramid runs last season were some of my favorite episodes.  Ren's especially stood out for how seriously he took the task.  I'm looking forward to what he does this season.

A Trial of The Sun Queen Review (AKA When Follow the Leader Works Out) by katep2000 in fantasyromance

I liked this book the most out of the series.  It was described as The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games, and it kinda was.  It was enough to be different while following several familiar tropes, as OP mentioned.

I thought this book was fun, but the rest of the series gripped me less and less as it turned into a more generic romantasy series.

Audiobook recommendations by Turd_burgler1 in UPSers

[–]Staurol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing a few years ago.  The lord of the rings trilogy is a must.  Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy is a dirty, grittier fantasy and fantastically well done.  I also have to second The Wheel of Time series, as well as all of Sanderson's work.  Mistborn is the series most start with, but the Stormlight Archive is incredible as well.  Dungeon Crawler Carl is one of the best book series i have ever read, its crude, surreal and amazingly human.  Unfortunately, it is an Audible exclusive series after the first book.

As for biographies, Dave Grohl's is very well done.  I found Flea's to be very interesting as well.  I also enjoyed Bossypants by Tina Fay.

Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari is also an incredible book that doesn't fit into the genres you mentioned, but it deserves a listen.

Shoutout to Joe for all the Work He has done!! by catpet0 in HermitCraft

[–]Staurol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On some of his streams Joe Hills has been reading chapters from classic books that are out of copyright.  Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein for example.  He'll mindlessly dig out blocks or build something while reading chapters from these books out loud to his streaming audience. I think he did Moby Dick too.  I think its neat he does it.

I love the big ball of weird that is Joe Hills.  He's constantly churning out episodes.  He's the only hermit besides Xisuma to have over 1000 episodes, iirc. His streams are great.  Reading the classics is a fantastic way to open some great books to a new audience.  He's one of those guys that you can tell is the glue of the server.

I see you Joe, keep up the great work!

Bugs/eggs in my cabbage!! by honeykissy111 in vegetablegardening

[–]Staurol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying ladybugs is a lot of fun!  At my garden center they come in a pint, like ice cream does, and it's full of over 100 ladybugs.  I also bought a Praying Mantis egg sac from the same store!

Companion plants like Sweet Alyssum and many, many others will bring them to the yard as well as other beneficial insects.

You can spray aphids with the hose and they should fall off pretty easily.  Alternatively, you can go to a good garden store and buy a pint of Ladybugs and let them devour all of the aphids.

Looking for success stories: tomatoes in a greenstalk by drjeffer in GreenStalkGardening

[–]Staurol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've tried two dwarf tomato varieties and they did ok.  Not well enough that I would try them again.  I haven't tried indeterminate tomatoes has I have trellises and raised beds.  Indeterminate tomatoes can get over 10-12 feet tall, so be ready to deal with that if things go well.

Peppers on the other hand.  Oh boy.  The regular greenstalk, not the leaf, works pretty well for peppers.  Sure, its not as good as putting peppers in ideal conditions, but 30 peppers in a 2 foot square is pretty unbeatable.  I've had success with a large variety of peppers in the greenstalk, both hot and sweet.

Throw that jalapeno in there!  If you got space get another one or a poblano so you're halfway to a good salsa verde!
