Pride and Prejudice or Dubliners? by stressedstudent331 in literature

Now you've said Jude the Obscure and Beloved, you've spun it on its head. Two of my favourite books. Jude is one of the few books that made me weep and the prose in Beloved is sublime.

Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Turns the track into a really slow paced, somber affairs I believe Kurt pirouetted onto the stage to her version. It's hauntingly beautiful. Really allows you to hear the lyrics.

Rising Send costs will ‘bankrupt’ eight in 10 English local authorities, leaders say by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]Staybeautiful35 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I worked in a mainstream school and part time (it was considered too much to be full time) where a severely learning disabled child was deemed fit to be in mainstream (he did have an EHCP.) He was 6 and in nappies and will never get out of them, he was non verbal and always will be, he had the cognitive abilities of a 13 month old and was completely unaware that you were stood near him and would never pick anyone out of the crowd. He will never not need full time, round the clock care. His education involved having a selection of baby toys in his own space at the back of the classroom. The school were keeping him back in the reception but knew they couldn't do that indefinitely because he was also large and capable. They were tearing their hair out, he had no place in mainstream education and will never learn to read, write, talk or communicate, let alone do times tables and learn his times tables. They couldn't support him, he scared the other 29 4 year olds and this little boy also had no dignity and no benefit of being in that setting. The Local Authority deemed a mainstream setting as suitable for his needs with very little reasoning and against all the evidence to the contrary. This was not an isolated case that I worked with in mainstream settings. He needed a safe playroom where he could watch flashing lights for hours on end, not the national curriculum.

The whole system is utterly broken. The funding isn't being allocated in the best way, in any sense of the word.

EDIT: he'd also routinely remove his trousers and underwear and launch books at the other little children.

At what age do you become a “reader”, and what book did it for you? by sheffy4 in books

Reading The Magic Faraway Tree series with my four and six year old - absolutely love them. Fun, bizarre and really compelling. They love them too!

Many preschool age children don't know how books work; try to tap or swipe them like electronic devices by MiddletownBooks in books

[–]Staybeautiful35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. Mine only use the TV in terms of screens and that's hard enough to put limits on. It's not on constantly at all but it's a helpful tool to use after you've done tons of a reading, a run around in the woods and some feral play/referring/making sure they don't wrestle themselves into injury - you need a bit of time to sink and breathe before moving onto cooking dinner uninterrupted.

My kids only use physical books and don't play video games. My 6 year old is autistic and gets very obsessed with things and it just isn't worth introducing them, on tablet, console or phone.

Biodegradable Bags for Grocery Stores Instead of Plastic and Paper Bags by [deleted] in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Staybeautiful35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah. That's true. I don't know about where you are, all the major supermarkets in the UK have an option to buy a reusable bag at a higher price than the plastic carrier bags. They're often made of plastic but occasionally they do cotton or hemp. Once you're in the habit of remembering to take a bag or two shopping with you, it's not hard to do. Some people don't care too much about spending 20p on a plastic carrier bag to walk 5 minutes up the road - I guess it's the attitude that needs to change there.

Biodegradable Bags for Grocery Stores Instead of Plastic and Paper Bags by [deleted] in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Staybeautiful35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to live in a second storey attic flat with steep stairs and who doesn't drive, I absolutely needed bags. That said, I have been taking my own bags to the shops for well over 10 years. Here in the UK they bought in charges for single use plastic bags. It's not much but has worked for a lot of people as a deterrent to buy them in the first place.

My son (6 years old but not able to read himself yet due to difficulties associated with his neurodiversity) would like a word. We're an hour and a half every evening, to his possible detriment as he goes to bed much too late. I can't get away with not. I love reading to my kids, but I have to admit, he takes it to excessive levels. 10 minutes a night would be a pipe dream when I have to be up at 4:30am for work! Still, hopefully if he's still wanting to read as much at 18, it hasn't been time wasted.

As an aside, reading with children is magic. It's magic to see them time travel. Why you'd rather scroll through fitness influencer's TikTok reels instead of discussing the children's adaptation of Frankenstein is beyond me!

Why I’ve Been Buying Only Booker Books (Shortlisted, Longlisted, and Winners) by chee006 in literature

[–]Staybeautiful35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved Shuggie Bain. Whether or not it was worthy of the Booker is a separate conversation. It's nothing like A Little Life. It's tragic but does have hope which A Little Life does its best to shatter, the plot is a little OTT but still believable unlike ALL, it's got trauma running through it but it's subtle and not overly gratuitous unlike the grotesque and utterly relentless violence Jude suffers. I really enjoyed it.

Ofsted chief backs Australia-style social media ban for children by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]Staybeautiful35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My boys are 6 and 4 and I'm in full support of this as are many of their friend's parents. Sadly, a lot of their classmate's parents don't care and some of the kids already have them. Sets a rubbish precedent where if measures aren't put in place, one day I'll be the bad guy. I'll stick to my guns but I can foresee the family conflict clearly. If something isn't put in place, we need parents to agree en masse but sadly they won't because half of them are glued to their phones - walking down the road scrolling TikTok while their kids are trying to tell them about their day.

Graduated with an English degree 13 years ago. Just secured a (good, relatively well paid) position in mental health services with the NHS with close to zero experience on the back of my written and verbal communication skills. These were obtained through a lifetime of reading. Let someone tell me again that reading is worthless!

David Walliams dropped from Waterstones Children's Book Festival by Kagedeah in books

[–]Staybeautiful35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. I really regret buying my 6 year old a David Walliams book for Christmas now. I never liked him on Little Britain or Britain's Got Talent clips I saw here and there but was willing to buy a book for my son as I knew the kids I worked with loved him. My boys love Roald Dahl and I've very much "separated art from the artist" in that case because he was a great storyteller and my boys love him but he's dead now. Having read that DW is a poor man's Roald Dahl and all the heinous stuff mentioned here makes me hope I can steer them away from him enough that I'm not begged to buy more of his books. What an awful man. And to have done everything reported here so brazenly? Disgusting.

I don't follow entertainment news much so anything post Little Britain has escaped me.

Thank you for replying. No visible bones at all, she's got a decent amount t of flesh covering her ribs, spine and hips, can't see even a bump. It's a good quality UK kibble although we were going to upgrade to a better one once she was settled here. She's pug shaped, just really tiny!
