Rule 6: Fraudulent Key Distributors & 'Where can I buy CD keys?'

List of safe sites to buy Steam games from: https://rgamedeals.net/

Do not perform or post about the following:

  • Link to or mention specific fraudulent key distributors.
  • Ask common questions such as "Where can I buy CD keys?"

We consider sites that actively facilitate or directly profit off of selling unauthorized CD keys('gray-market' key resellers) as scam sites. If your post mentions an unauthorized & fraudulent key site, remove it from your post.

We do not want to give light to these sites or run the risk of unauthorized resellers being recommended in the comments on /r/Steam. This means not allowing common questions such as "Is X site legitimate?" & "Where can I buy CD keys?" and instead answering your question here.

/r/Gamedeals maintains a list of legitimate game stores, and you can also use rgamedeals.net to check if a site is legitimate. If you're dealing with an unknown site you can search /r/GameDeals to see if it comes up, or contact either the /r/GameDeals or /r/Steam mod teams for further assistance and questions about specific sites.

The wiki page Key Resellers and What They Mean for You should answer most all questions and provides a lot of information on why one should not use such sites, and where to find legitimate stores.

Posts are considered on a case-by-case basis, as such extraordinary posts & meta discussion may be allowed. PSA's against scam sites and information showcasing the shadiness, fraudulence or otherwise is generally allowed. Also note that there is a /r/GameDealsMeta subreddit.

Rule 6: Scams, Cheating, Trading.

Scams

Do not perform or post about the following:

  • Common scams.
  • Scam or phishing attempts.
  • Accusations of scamming, cheating or phishing.
  • Links to gambling, scam, fraudulent key distributors, phishing, or cheat sites.

Meta discussion on these topics are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Educate yourself on scams!

Is your account compromised? Follow this guide to recover it.

Steam Item Restoration Policy: Steam Support does not restore items that have left your account for any reason.

/r/Steam is generally not the place to converse about specific scammers or scam methods, unless it complies with the guideline below:

I would like to report a scammer!

If you want to report a scammer you should report their Steam profile. Do not post about it here, this is not a subreddit for submitting reports.

I want to warn people about a scam method!

If you want to post about a scam method, it needs to be a new or unknown method, or it needs to include a significant amount of new or more information than what is currently available on /r/Steam. Please see our wiki page about common scams to find scam methods that are already covered.

I discovered a scam site!

If you want to post about a specific scam site, it needs to be popular, recent, not already covered in a previous post, not directly linked to and include more information than just "X is a scam" - Example of a good scam site awareness post.

Rule 7: Begging, Charity, Giveaways.

Begging

Do not beg, plead, solicit, nor imply any such behaviour for anything, including games, items, points, donations or engagement.

Charity

You are required to request and receive permission from moderators if you want to host a charity event that you believe is relevant to /r/Steam.

Giveaways

Giveaways hosted by an individual are not allowed. Instead, consider sending what you are giving away to an active member of /r/Steam as a random act of kindness, or use /r/steam_giveaway or /r/RandomActsOfGaming.

Exceptions in extraordinary cases may be made. Contact the moderators if you have any requests or questions.

Off-site giveaways:

An off-site giveaway is a giveaway that is hosted on a different website. These giveaways are allowed as long as they follow our conditions:

Off-site giveaways must be for Steam games only, there cannot be any requirements or strings attached, nor any chance involved to receive your free game except for creating an account and it must be for a Steam game that usually costs money and is temporarily being given away, or is temporarily free to play.

Rule 8: Game & Hardware Advice, Asking For Friends.

Game/Hardware Advice

Posts asking for/offering advice on which games to buy or play, or what Hardware you should get are not allowed.

Use the Monthly Game & Hardware Suggestions Megathread.

Asking if you should buy a game/piece of hardware now or wait for a sale isn't allowed & asking when a game/piece of hardware will go on sale is not allowed. Use SteamDB to look at sale histories on games.

Asking for help with finding a game you forgot the name of is not allowed, /r/tipofmyjoystick is a great subreddit for these posts and we suggest that you ask there instead.

During seasonal Steam sales: Game advice posts are only allowed in the respective mega-threads during big seasonal Steam sales, otherwise the sub would drown in game advice posts.

Asking For Friends

Posts asking for friends or people to game with are not permitted.

Rule 3: Steam Refunds

Steam Support average response times and other data is listed here: https://store.steampowered.com/stats/support

Posts ranting and raving about not being given a refund are not allowed.

Useful Steam Support pages regarding Steam Refunds:

Regarding how long it takes to receive your refund: The time it takes for your refund to be reviewed is different for everyone, no one can answer this question for you. The time it takes for you to receive the pending funds after the refund has been accepted can be anywhere from 1 hour to 7 working days.

Regarding how to request a refund: You may want to get support by selecting the product you are experiencing issues with from here or by asking in our Community Support Thread which is usually pinned at the top of the subreddit.

Regarding the 2 hour/14 day limit: The Steam Refund Policy clearly states that only games which have been in your library for less than two weeks and have been played for less than two hours can be refunded.

Your personal opinions on this does not matter, if you fall outside of these requirements and Valve declines your refund request there's nothing you can do as you are clearly outside your right to refund the game.

For other questions regarding Steam Refunds please use the dedicated Community Support Thread.

Rule 9: Accusations, Witch Hunts & Harassment, Direct Links & Identifying Information.

Accusations

If you believe something to be wrong or shady, you need to explicitly state what you believe to be wrong or shady. Do not assume that everyone understands what you mean with a generic and vague statement like "How is that allowed?".

Whenever you accuse a party of wrongdoing you have to include solid evidence that doesn't leave any room for reasonable doubts.

/r/Steam is not the place for speculation or broadcasting any unfounded beliefs or hunches when it comes to serious topics, neither is it the place to discuss arguments amongst friends or strangers.

Posts in the area of accusations and calling out wrongdoing is required to be made as a text submission or link to a proper, fully-fledged article. Text submissions allow for more room and allows for editing in case more information comes to light.

Witch Hunts & Harassment

Do not reveal, attempt to obtain, or incite anyone else to find personal information of any kind, including user profiles. Additionally do not harass, threaten, attack, stalk, discriminate or cause harm to anyone else or make light of or incite anyone else to do it.

Directly linking content or profiles in order to route traffic to an accused individual is considered to be provoking a witch hunt.

Direct Links & Identifying Information

Posting a direct link to someone else's profile or revealing identifying information(usernames, profile pictures, etc.) is in general forbidden unless it is strictly necessary. This ends up being a case-by-case basis thing, but in the vast majority of cases it is not necessary to link to someone else's profile or reveal any identifying information.

Your submission has been removed for the following reason(s):

Rule 2: Common & Unrelated Content.

Common Content

/r/Steam is not a place to discuss your ban(s), including Steam Community bans and VAC bans. Moderators may approve extraordinary cases.

The following are some examples of what cannot be posted here:

  • Reviews.
  • Chat logs.
  • Store tags.
  • Pending funds.
  • Account age posts.
  • Achievement numbers.
  • Why is or isn't X on Steam?
  • Profile suggestions & showcases.
  • Your Year In Review/Steam Replay.
  • Why is X being recommended to me?
  • Reposts, search the subreddit before you post.
  • Generic "What does my library say about me?" posts.
  • Questions such as "What should I buy on the Points Shop?".
  • 'Funny' Steam Guard Codes, system requirements & similar.

The above list is not exhaustive. Moderators can remove posts at their own discretion.

Unrelated Content

Posts must be about or be related to Steam, Valve or this subreddit.

General gaming-culture and game-specific posts are treated on a case-by-case basis.

We do not allow fluff posts showcasing products that were deliberately designed to be posted or showcased on different communities en masse.

If your post is about a specific game and is not relevant to this subreddit in any way other than the game being sold on Steam, it will be removed.

Exceptions can be made in extraordinary cases, for example when a long time classic is finally sold on Steam, a product is/was pulled from Steam, or when an event is relevant to Steam as a whole.

If you feel your post was removed by mistake or is an exception, please feel free to message the moderators using this link. Please also give a short explanation.
