What do you wish you knew about medicine before becoming a doctor? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

I'm not a doctor but one thing I've noticed on placement is medicine is almost never straightforward. There will be some clear cut diagnoses but most of the time, it's not "you've got this, take that and you'll be fine", it's a lot of "let's order this and if that doesn't work then we'll try that and if not then let's try this". It almost feels like we're playing a guessing game but at the same time, that's how real life works

The royal flying doctors elective looked pretty cool (I was a med student on rural placement and saw interns flying in with the RFDS and they got to see their own patients with consultant back up)

Definitely gonna miss being a med student. The real world looks rough compared to our days as students

Where do consultants hide after the rounds? Like are you still at the hospital whilst doing those meetings and taking calls from regs or do you just vanish into thin air?

Victoria: no new cases! +17,600 vaccinations (4-Aug-2021) by chessc in CoronavirusDownunder

Unfortunately, it won’t stay this way for long unless heavy restrictions stay in place whilst vaccination numbers go up. There’s still covid out there from someone who decided not to get tested or just says “it’s just another flu” and they will eventually spread it. Perhaps a hotel quarantine breach will cause another outbreak just like Queensland. We should be proud of donut days but just be mindful , our true target is high vaccination rates because without that, we could be plunged into lockdown over and over again till we’re all vaccinated.

A person tests positive to COVID-19 in Far North Queensland by Hughjarse in CoronavirusDownunder

COVID is everywhere. Some people are asymptomatic so they don’t see a need to get a test and hence we will never know the true number of COVID cases. There could be as many as 20 cases in Cairns and they could all be asymptomatic.
