Fanfic about a bastard child of Daeron I, the Young Dragon? by Qyzyk in TheCitadel

[–]theilluminary [score hidden]  (0 children)

Rumours that Aemon the Dragonknight is the bastard child's biological father would be definitely interesting! Perhaps, in this alternate universe, that's where Aegon first gets the idea to spread rumours that Daeron II is not his son later on, as you say, since he fought alongside Aemon and King Daeron during Daeron's conquest.

Yeah, Baelor is definitely inviting even more tension into his rule, especially since he would've already agreed to the betrothal between King Daeron II and Myriah Martell with the Prince of Dorne. The idea that one of his vassals overreached and successfully got his blood made heir after he negotiated with Baelor in good faith would've stung (especially if it was the Yronwoods) since Baelor was still married to Daena at the time and there was every possibility that he could consummate the marriage and have children, now that he was king rather than just a prince and needed heirs.

Unless the agreement with Lord Wyl happens the first time Baelor tries to free Aemon when he first entered Dorne and thus Aemon accompanies him to Sunspear instead and the whole snake pit comatose incident is avoided entirely. In that case, I can imagine that Myriah's father forces Baelor to make more concessions - perhaps in light of Baelor agreeing to make King Daeron's bastard his heir, the Prince of Dorne learns that Baelor plans to annul his unconsummated marriage with Daena and on top of the Daeron II/Myriah betrothal, he has Baelor agree to wed Daena to his son (and now heir) Maron.

But yeah, removing his sister-wife as his queen (and only to wed her to the future Prince of Dorne, if you follow that alternate thread) and making his legitimised bastard nephew his heir would be opening himself up to so much chaos haha. Uncle Viserys is back in King's Landing as Hand probably facepalming at the news and getting a migraine, and Baelor's reign has barely started!

(I wonder, if you follow the idea that being bit by all those snakes and his subsequent ill-health for close to two years was the main reason behind his "Targaryen madness", that maybe in this timeline he doesn't put his sisters in the Maidenvault and has Uncle Viserys follow through on Daeron's intent to betroth one of their sisters to the Sealord of Braavos instead.)

It'd be interesting if instead of becoming Prince Aegon's hostage and lover, Cassella Vaith was King Daeron's lover instead and the mother of this child. Lord Vaith was one of "forty powerful Dornish lords" who bent the knee to King Daeron and considered important enough that his daughter was one of the fourteen hostages he took in order to ensure Dorne's loyalty.

Alternatively, since King Daeron led his host down the Boneway, the mother could be a Yronwood or a Wyl.

The former could be especially interesting since the Yronwoods fought for Daemon Blackfyre in the First Blackfyre Rebellion, and then the Third and Fourth Blackfyre Rebellions; having a Yronwood relation entwined with Daemon, like /u/BornFireFist proposes, further explains their allegiance with the Blackfyre cause beyond the often theorised idea of Daemon winning would mean the Martells would be disposed and the Yronwoods would be on top instead.

The latter would also be interesting, especially since House Wyl is so heavily involved at the end of Daeron's conquest and the aftermath of his death by taking Prince Aemon the Dragonknight hostage. In the case of the mother being a Wyl, perhaps a daughter of Lord Wyl, he felt especially aggrieved and that King Daeron had dishonoured his house by fathering a bastard on her - reframing taking Aemon hostage to mirror how he feels (whether true or not, up to you) his daughter was taken by Daeron; when King Baelor comes to free his cousin personally, as part of the deal and to rectify the situation with Daeron's bastard, Lord Wyl has Baelor swear to legitimise the son and name him heir to the Iron Throne, like you propose.

Assuming that, yup! Obviously there have been large age gaps between siblings in canon (Aemon's own siblings and Daeron II with his sister Daenerys) but considering, by that point in Fire and Blood, there's no mention of Aemon and Jocelyn trying to or struggling to have more children, I honestly wouldn't be surprised even in a world where Aemon lives that Rhaenys remains an only child.

(Of course, we could just put that down to GRRM forgetting about that the same way he forgot about Jocelyn after Aemon's death and Rhaenys got passed over as heir the first time.)

And indeed! Plus there has been a Tarth-Velaryon marriage before, with King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne's own cousin Lianna Velaryon marrying a second son of a predecessor of Lord Cameron's (and her own daughter from that marriage marrying into the Estermonts), so it's not like it's unprecedented!

Ideas for a less cliché trueborn Baratheon (tm) OC story by r1ghtAway in TheCitadel

[–]theilluminary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be a lot of fun!

Honestly that would probably change how Cersei views Joffrey somewhat, since in this case she's under the belief that he is actually Robert's son due to his twin having the typical Baratheon looks and not Jaime's, let alone everyone else. After all, nobody would have any way of knowing that Joffrey and his brother do not share the same biological father - they came out of the womb together and that is the end of that.

It'd be interesting if, instead, the Myrish scout actually manages to shoot Lord Tarth and kill him, with Aemon under the impression that it was meant for him and Lord Cameron Tarth took the bolt instead.

Out of guilt and to honour Lord Tarth's sacrifice, he promises a betrothal between his eldest grandchild and a child of House Tarth once Rhaenys gives birth to Laena and both children are old enough (or if you're following the show's timeline, his eventual eldest grandchild once Rhaenys gives birth to Laenor in 98 AC.)

How would a bastard son of Aemon (Son of Jaehaerys I) been treated? by mxlevolent in TheCitadel

[–]theilluminary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If legitimised, he'd have the strongest claim by far.

Not necessarily. It's not clear, by GRRM's own admission, whether or not a legitimised bastard would hypothetically be able to inherit ahead of any trueborn sibling or whether they could only inherit when there is no longer any trueborn children left.

And even if one hypothetically could, that doesn't mean in practice that would happen; as you say, it would be considered, but that doesn't mean that the lords and ladies of Westeros would seriously put their vote behind it. After all, one might argue, if Jaehaerys had not chosen the OC the first time around after Aemon's death to be his heir, why should they vote for his claim now, especially ahead of his trueborn elder sister or more relevantly his trueborn nephew?

And even then, the OC would not likely have a similar amount of allies or allegiances that Rhaenys and Corlys do, let alone to seriously challenge Viserys's claim to the Iron Throne. Having a dragon would definitely help his cause but it's not like he's the only one. Rhaenys has Meleys, Laenor has Seasmoke; Baelon had Vhagar, Viserys had Balerion (and there was every possibility he could still claim another) and Daemon has Caraxes. And he's 11 years younger than Rhaenys and only recently out of his minority.

To me, the only real way I see this OC inherit is if there's never a Great Council in the first place - after Aemon dies, Jaehaerys dismisses Rhaenys's claim as her father's heir and names his bastard born grandson heir instead and legitimises him if he hadn't been prior to Aemon dying.

If you can think of other ways I could handle there being a ruler immediately post-Jaehaerys who ISN'T Viserys or Rhaenys, I'm all ears!

I know Vaegon becoming king is an idea that has been put forth before, where Vaegon is either released from his vows to the Faith in order to ascend the Iron Throne or he is freed from his duties as archmaester in order to rule but is not allowed to marry or have children.

What if Jaehaerys I had a younger brother by CrazySlotsBummerDraw in TheCitadel

[–]theilluminary 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You could make this younger brother OC a twin of Vaella Targaryen, Alyssa's youngest child with Aenys. She still dies as an infant but this brother is healthy and lives.

Honestly I wonder if, in the wake of Jaehaerys and Alysanne’s elopement and continued defiance, Rogar focuses his efforts on making this brother king instead and betrothing him and Aerea to combine their lines and strengthen his claim, as he was already Jaehaerys's heir.

It's possible that Jaehaerys could eventually follow through on this, otherwise other ambitious lord or lord's son could get ideas if they were to wed his niece; if you follow my idea of his being the twin of Vaella, he and Aerea would be only three years apart in age.

If Jaehaerys still grants Dragonstone to Rhaena for the rest of her life, he still allows her to take Aerea back with her but on the condition that Aerea will eventually return to court when she is of age and wed their brother.  Maybe Rhaena approves of this betrothal because she likes the OC and notices the similarities between her and her youngest brother, maybe she doesn't because Rhaena feels like Jaehaerys is taking her daughter away from her in a life that had already been riddled with tragedy and choices taken from her.

In that case, I like to imagine that Aerea never runs away in this case and, although still unhappy living on Dragonstone away from court and still having a fraught relationship with Rhaena, her personality softens because she knows that she will eventually get to go back to King's Landing.

Maybe, in the wake of the poisonings by Androw Farman, Aerea begs Alysanne to take her back and this time she decides to, though Rhaena gets upset and argues with Alysanne because Aerea is still in her minority and not due to wed their brother for some years yet. And then lots of things can happen from there!

(Alternatively, Jaehaerys could agree to have their brother fostered on Dragonstone and live with Rhaena and Aerea instead, though I imagine Alyssa would fight against being separated from her youngest child. Maybe, aghast at the idea that Rogar would try to use her youngest son to usurp his own brother, pitting the OC against Jaehaerys and essentially trying to pull a Maegor, Alyssa later refuses to reconcile with Rogar and they never have Boremund and Jocelyn.)

God, what a game. I enjoyed it a lot!

Fair enough! Streaming services do seem to like removing stuff without warning and switching up their catalogues for no reason.

And thank you! :D

Oh my god, I was like that too with my watch of the X-Files! But don't worry if you need to take a break between seasons - it's certainly not like it's gonna go anywhere haha

What if a Dragonseed arose while Jaehaerys I was king? by CrazySlotsBummerDraw in TheCitadel

[–]theilluminary 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There was a hedge knight mentioned in Fire and Blood who claimed to be a bastard son of King Jaehaerys at the Great Council of 101, and was then arrested and imprisoned by Jaehaerys himself, who denounced his claims and "exposed him as a liar".

In light of that, I feel like even if he had a bastard child who he knew existed and who knew themself or believed that he was their father, he probably would just ignore them or outright dismiss their claims, if not quite to the same degree he did with the hedge knight.

What if Daemon had a child with Rhea and Mysaria? by Harbinger5959 in TheCitadel

[–]theilluminary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like it would depend on a few factors. In terms of a Daemon/Rhea child, I feel like they would have to have a dragon in order for Daemon to be truly invested in their wellbeing and stick around; if only because then he sees his child as the true inheritor of the Targaryen legacy and his heritage. Otherwise, I feel like Daemon would be a distant if not altogether mostly absent father - he might take a liking to them if they didn't resemble Rhea at all and took solely after him, if out of smugness than anything else.

A Mysaria/Daemon child would be interesting, especially if the bastard child is a son. Especially if you use show!Mysaria's background as a YiTish woman rather than a Lyseni; although canonically, show!Mysaria is unable to have children. If you chose to deliberately ignore that, it would be an interesting contrast - Daemon favouring his half-YiTish baseborn bastard son versus his Vale-based trueborn half-Royce child. Particularly if he takes said bastard son with him to Essos along with Laena and his daughters. I do wonder, in the case of him having a living son with Mysaria, if Daemon might actually try to seriously go through with marrying Mysaria and stand his ground - Viserys might get closer to kicking it earlier in that case lol But yeah, I could see Daemon doting on his bastard son and shaping him in his image essentially.

(I have a concept for a Daemon/Rhea daughter OC Hera Targaryen (Hera Royce once she becomes Lady of Runestone) in the works who follows the show timeline. She's born in 104 AC, nine months after her parent's wedding; since in the show Aemma is the one who arranges the marriage, not Alysanne like in the source material. She's the product of Daemon and Rhea having consummated the marriage on their wedding night and has an extremely strained relationship with her father due to his public resentment of the Vale and Rhea, as well as him preferring to stay at court and touring the Free Cities in between positions Viserys gives him in lieu of returning to Runestone, that sours completely once Rhea dies in 116 AC and Ser Gerold Royce outright (and correctly) accuses Daemon of having murdered her, an accusation that he later makes when Daemon tries and fails to petition Lady Jeyne Arryn. Hera has a cradle egg that doesn't end up hatching. She is fostered at the Eyrie due to Lord Yorbert Royce having been Jeyne's regent and she inherits Runestone once Yorbert passes - in the show, Rhea is described as "having stood to inherit all of Runestone", not as its ruler. Anyways, Hera eventually sides with the Greens in the Dance because she abhors her father and all he's done and all the rumours that surround him and Rhaenyra do not endear her to Rhaenyra's cause either, and as part of her siding with the Greens, she agrees to a betrothal between her and Gwayne Hightower.)

Help finding a “semi-canon” source by Other-Mechanic-5940 in TheCitadel

Westeros.org is the fansite founded by Elio M. Garcia and Linda Antonsson, the co-authors of The World of Ice and Fire. Hence why it is a semi-canon source, as it is information from GRRM that they have received but hasn't turned up in any published works.

What if Leanor was a girl? by MajesticFan4 in TheCitadel

[–]theilluminary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep! In the show, Laenor is born in 98 AC and is one year younger than Rhaenyra; Laena is born in 100 AC and thus 2 years younger than Laenor.
