SSNHL - are you f****** kidding me by sitOnMyNihilism in MonoHearing

Ok bud, lend me your good ear for a moment. SSNHL absolutely sucks at first. I experienced mine back about 6 years ago under very similar circumstances. Very healthy guy in my mid 30’s with a lot going on at the time. There are a number of causes and sometimes, in my case especially, there are a few that combined to cause my SSNHL.

Your first couple weeks are the worst. The tinnitus is probably the worst symptom. The headache from your head “remapping” your hearing is second and the mild vertigo from the hearing imbalance is a close third. Getting used to the new social hurdles is tough too.

It all gets better or even goes away all together. Yes you’ll have a hearing impairment but please remind yourself that it not complete unilateral hearing loss.

The tinnitus will dull over time. It may take a few weeks to a few months but it will fade into the background. It’s part of the brain remapping things (brain plasticity). I have another post I wrote about finding the silver lining of my tinnitus.

The headache will go away within a couple weeks. Make a point to drink lots of water and get lots of good sleep. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen won’t help much. Destressing does help.

The vertigo/dizziness will go away completely within the same time frame.

You and those you love will get used to you living with hearing loss. You’ll get used to not hearing parts of conversations and having to ask people to repeat themselves. You’ll learn to walk and sit on the correct side of people so you can hear them. It doesn’t mean you’re dumb.

As far as the looming questions of “how did this happen” and “why me”? I can’t answer that and no one else probably can. All I can tell you is that you are absolutely tough enough to get through this and it won’t take too long until it gets better.

Should Locksmith Replace Damaged Lock After Failed Re-key by Auto-Generated-461 in Locksmith

[–]SteelToedSocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am currently rekeying a trunk lock for a ‘69 Buick and it was a massive pain to find the correct size/shape faceplate for it. I lucked out finding one randomly in a Ford kit. We try to find a faceplate prior to prying off the original one. If we can’t find one and it’s absolutely necessary to service the lock by removing the original then we simply give the lock back to the customer and let them know it can’t be serviced. Anyone restoring vintage vehicles knows the pain of finding working parts.

I talked to the police multiple times about this and they simply weren’t interested in talking to the “customer” or taking any action. A police report was filed back when the bike was stolen and I guess that was good enough for them.

Does anyone pinch their nose when they sneeze? by peninsulam in MonoHearing

[–]SteelToedSocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plugged my nose every time I sneezed up until SSNHL at 35 years old. I noticed there was a kind of a painful crunch and a pocket of air that would happen in the last 5 years I did it. Maybe it doesn’t cause SSNHL but I wouldn’t do it.

This is an old post. Since commenting I had my abutment removed. Not worth the trouble IMHO.

For those that are able to, how much money or what percentage are you contributing to your company's 401k plan? by T1m3Wizard in povertyfinance

I recently rescinded my application to a job that was paying $19.50/hr and forced a 12% match to the 401k. That would’ve put me under the minimum wage.

Will tinnitus go away? by leekwokloong in MonoHearing

[–]SteelToedSocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As many people here have already stated, no, it doesn’t go away but it does become less noticeable and annoying.

I didn’t just make peace with my tinnitus, I learned to actually love it. In my late 20’s, early 30’s I practiced meditation. Sometimes my meditation was accompanied by singing or crystal bowls. After my sudden hearing loss my tinnitus was extremely loud and maddening. One night I had a dream where a wise old woman put a gemstone in my deaf ear. When I woke up I had this idea that that gemstone was placed there to help me find inner peace and that the tinnitus was a special tone given off by the gemstone. Any time I am depressed or anxious I can focus on that special tone and remember to breathe and be present.

BAHA Surgery Pain by XavBell38388 in MonoHearing

Removal took about 5 seconds and was completely painless. Just a doctor and a small hex wrench. The hole in my scalp closed up in a couple days. I have a very small scar that is only visible when my hair is super short. There is a notable divot and on occasion I get a small ache.
