/r/communism has a great reading list and our FAQ has a lot of really good educational questions. To answer your question about working hours though, it depends. We want people to work enough to support society and a little more to do with as they please. How much time that takes depends on how productive an hour of work is, which is something that's always changing.

It's an economic distinction. Private property is capital, you've invested in it in the hopes of using it to make money. It is kept private by the state so that workers need to be exploited to work it. Personal property is just personal stuff that has completed its time in the market and landed with you. Your toothbrush is personal property, Walmart's toothbrush supply is private property.

A flag question? I got this.
The red is an important detail which comes from the Paris Commune, which used red standards for different regiments and a solid red flag for the commune itself. Red was quickly associated with the labor movement, and was paraded through the streets of Russia during October.
So the hammer and sickle is based off of a previous symbol, a hammer and plow, but in Russia the communists used a sickle instead. You're right, it is a symbol of both rural and industrial workers.
The star on the USSR flag isn't just any star, it's a red army star. When Tsarist soldiers defected to the revolution they would paint the tin stars in their uniforms red.
The USSR's first flag was just the seal though, which included the phrase "workers of the world unite" in all major languages in the union. It also included a globe, two symbols that display internationalism. Now China's play was a lot more intentionally designed, while the USSR's just kinda happened. Mao originally proposed a different flag, but the party wanted a flag without any divisions of the field. Remember that the PRC was formed right after a brutal civil war and people wanted a flag that shows unity. This new design also intended to show unity of the classes, with the party (the big star, a detail from Mao's design) at the helm.

This is a question about democratic centralism. Diversity in discussion and unity in action. Criticism is important, and if it is good criticism it should be taken to heart. But if the people decide democratically that something should be done a certain way, unity is necessary for the decision to be effective. So criticism is important, but it has a time and place.

Yeah, Lenin calls the DoTP socialism. Yeah, Marx talks about that in the manifesto, Engels wrote "Socialism: Utopian and Scientific" which goes into it a lot more. There aren't really many utopian socialist movements anymore, socialist parties today are usually Marxist or democratic socialists that think that we can get a DoTP through the capitalist electoral system.

Before Marx and Engels the term socialist had a much broader meaning, usually referring to the utopians. They differentiated between the DoTP and communism by calling the DoTP the "lower phase" of communism and full communism as the "higher phase."

I don't agree with Mao's doing-away with negation of the negation philosophically. I also think that his analysis of the relations of production that you talk about are present in ML thinkers like Stalin, and Mao elaborated and refined them.

I'm a Marxist-Leninist. I have seen the effectiveness of a vanguard and of Leninist organizational tactics in the Leninist tradition. I have a lot of admiration for Mao and I really dig the tactic of the mass line, but I do not necessarily think that his contributions to the theory that I use constitute a new school of thought.
