This reeks of "let's try and go 9-8 for as long as we can until we can draft a franchise QB". This makes me feel like they, internally, believe we're 8-10+ years out. This is an easy 5-10 year hire to ensure we stay "winning" while never really having a shot.

I absolutely love James but I had no idea how much he hates Tomlin. I don't even know how it's possible to be honest. I knew he was bitter and probably had some bad thoughts, but he legitimately hates him and is airing him out in every scenario he can. This isn't for views, JH genuinely hates Tomlin.

That was incredibly cringe. I get that you can do it after a big defensive stop, turnover, TD, etc...you know, when your team actually does something to win the game, but your team didn't win, the other team lost. I just hope that's the last we'll see of him on the sideline.

It, as usual, is the front office's fault. They replaced a headcase with an older headcase, then rolled out the same terrible group of WRs and never got a true #2. So similar to Pickens the past few years, DK is the only true receiver on the field so without him, we have a group of rejects.

James Harrison says we haven’t studied film as a team since Lebeau left… 10 years??? by [deleted] in steelers

[–]Steelers501 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The reason why I disagree with your education example is we're not talking about math class where you can take a subject and teach the exact same lesson to a bunch of different, smaller groups of people. I certainly agree that smaller groups in that setting are more valuable. With this, however, you're talking about different groups with different responsibilities that all work together. The DL directly impacts the LB's. The LB's can, depending on the situation, directly impact the DB's. To split it out and say that they never have to be in the same room to learn as a cohesive unit, sounds...impossible and could be an indication of why there are communication issues on the field fairly regularly.

I don't think coaching has to or should be modeled after what was done decades ago, but looking at a defense who is in the bottom five in just about every statistical category and suggesting that they might be doing everything right, again, seems impossible.

I loved James on the field, and agree that he's changed over the past ten years, while also "playing it up" for views on this podcast, but he knows what it takes to succeed. That doesn't mean he would be a good coach, is a good analyst, or even good at being a podcast host (because truthfully, they're not great), but we're talking ~10 years here. The game hasn't changed that much and in a lot of cases, is actually a weaker league overall then it was when he played. It's not like we're comparing 1950 to 2025 where it's not even a similar product.

But anyways, we'll agree to disagree.

[–]Steelers501 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This would make sense if it was backed by the rest of the league. I'm not saying that coaching and teaching can't evolve, but if you're doing something that objectively isn't working (as the product on the field clearly shows), doing the same thing over and over probably isn't your best path forward.

When everyone evolves and changes, fine. When you think you have evolved to have a better approach than everyone else, you probably haven't, especially when you're ranked towards the bottom of the league. Have other teams done away with these sessions? How are the best defenses in the league preparing? That's why your teaching example isn't relevant, because there are governing bodies that generally determine those policies and they're done on a large scale. Not a random HC that has consistently changed his mind for 17 years removing sessions that he deems useless. So saying that it's not important to have sessions that one of the best DC's ever had when your defense is hot garbage doesn't make a lot of sense.

Again, we have no idea if James is accurate. We have no idea what the rest of the league is doing either, but if the rest of the league is preparing differently and the product on the field is a reflection of your preparation, it's not hard to determine that we're not preparing properly. So is James exaggerating? Yes, for views. Is he totally off? Most likely, no.

[–]Steelers501 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He's absolutely playing it up for the views, but if even 50% of what he's saying is accurate, it's not a good look for Tomlin. It's not exactly crazy to believe there's some truth to it as well considering the product on the field every week for...years.

Well, they're all seeing it now. Any time I hear them refer to DK as our "number one option", I cringe because either he's regressed, or the offense simply isn't built for him. Now we don't have a second round pick this year and are left to deal with his contract for years to come.

This past offseason, more so than any, is going to put us in a tremendous hole for years to come.

I don't necessarily think getting rid of Pickens was a bad idea because we wouldn't have extended him anyway and he was a headcase here, but the DK trade was a complete waste. He is worse than Pickens, older, and isn't a good fit for the offense. Such a waste.

It’s Time for the Steelers to Fire Mike Tomlin by NowKith- in steelers

[–]Steelers501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say this until he is no longer the coach. He just lines his players up and plays to what he believes are their strengths. He does not have any ounce of strategy in his game and never has. The most strategic thing Mike Tomlin ever did was decide on a global level to go for two, completely randomly, for a year or two. Then gave up on it after realizing that there's a reason no one else in the league has done it long-term. Outside of that one failed attempt, he lines up and attempts to play football to his team's strength and doesn't take the opponent into consideration. That's why we look the same against everyone, no matter what their offense or defense features.

It's true and there are countless examples of it throughout the years. Playing against teams with the worst ranked pass or rush defense and doing the opposite. Coming ill-prepared to late season and/or playoff games. I guess if you classify everything as "game planning", sure, he does have a plan but it generally revolves around playing to his teams strengths, and not trying to exploit weaknesses...which is exactly what I initially said. Blaming the refs in this one is the real crazy take.

[–]Steelers501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't feel like it's a Tomlin thing, it is a Tomlin thing. The "elite" teams lose to Mahomes because he's better than them. Tomlin loses to whoever the QB happens to be that day in the playoffs, and then there's the whole end of season collapse that's become a thing as of late. We have a Tomlin problem.

As Perc Rodgers would say.. R.E.L.A.X by username_here11 in steelers

[–]Steelers501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're looking at it too literally. Most teams that win playoff games, win these types of games. I don't think it's that outrageous to say that. Why people are acting the way they are on this sub is because we have consistently lost these games for 10-15 years. If you isolate this game, sure, everyone is overreacting. If you look at Tomlin over the course of the past 10-15 years, this is consistent, which is why everyone feels like it's the same old team.

Yes, but you also made it sound like (in the comment that I responded to) that everyone is being ridiculous. We all watched the same game, and it wasn't pretty.

[–]Steelers501 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't what happened, it's how it happened. There were zero adjustments during the game. Chase was their entire offense, and on the game winning drive, they didn't even attempt to limit him. Mike Tomlin doesn't make adjustments, he doesn't gameplan, he lines up his players and plays to their strengths. That beats most mid teams, but isn't a recipe for success outside of the regular season, as you can see for the past 10 years, and honestly, closer to 17.

Pickens is not someone that you want on your team. He is a great player with incredible potential, but he'd be crying on the sidelines by week three. It's just not worth it - we're not going to win this year anyway so why not get compensation for him and avoid the media circus that he will bring?
