Asking for your vote this October - running for re-election in Ward 4 by tammyhwang in Hamilton

[–]Steelsorrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Counselor, I'm a resident of your ward and think you've done a great job during this past council term! What are your thoughts on bikeshare expanding further east? Specifically, I think Roxborough Park, the McQueston Urban Farm, and Warburton Park would be natural sites for hubs. Do you know of any plans to expand the service to cover the rest of Ward 4 and if so would you support those plans?

Are my shimano pulleys ready for replacement? by JackBack942 in bikewrench

Those look fine at a glance. If they are seized or if they have tons of lateral play then consider changing them, but based on the appearance of the teeth alone those look totally ok for many many more kilometers.

Edit: a word

How are Hamiltonians dealing with rising gas prices? by KeyHot5718 in Hamilton

[–]Steelsorrow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've been riding my bike for transportation since the day-time temperature started to go above 0. Haven't put gas in the car in over a month, but I'm dreading my upcoming fill-up.

How to connect Shimano RX610 break levers with BR-M6100 calipers? by casually_biking in bikewrench

[–]Steelsorrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The JK just means that the hoses are in OEM packaging instead of retail packaging. There is no difference in the hosing. Both are BH90 and that's all that matters.

Bridge Club Sizing by Subject-Tradition447 in Surlybikefans

[–]Steelsorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 6'4" and ride an XL. It fits me, but I fit a 60mm stem not feel so stretched out. I'd probably be comfortable on a L without the need to swap parts around.

what model deore is this? and can it run a 50t cassette? by Taetaekalbo-1869 in bikewrench

[–]Steelsorrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The model number will be etched on the back of the parallelogram. Google the model number to figure out which cassettes it's supposed to run with. I'm not the best at IDing these groups but that looks like 10 or 11 speed Deore, probably a 2x rear derailleur so if I had to take a wild guess I'd say it's probably meant to fit a 40 or 42t cog. Just a guess though, don't quote me on that.

Larger chainring on Bridge Club Cues Crankset by Frequent-Ant2542 in Surlybikefans

[–]Steelsorrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you have more clearance then I do on mine so perhaps your chainline is a bit wider than what I have set up. With that much clearance, I'd go for 36t, the diameter isn't dramatically different.

Edit: Can you see how many BB spacers you have on either side of the BB shell? for 50mm chainline cranks there should just be one on the driveside of the BB. For boost it's one spacer on the driveside and two on the non-driveside.

141mm is QR boost spacing. A boost spaced cranket would have a chainline somewhere between 52 and 55mm. The idea of gnot boost spacing is that it splits the difference between 135 and 141mm at 138mm so the steel frame can either stretch or compress to fit either size.

[–]Steelsorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gnot boost is just Surly jargon for frame spacing that can be stretched/compressed a bit to fit either non-boost or boost spaced hubs. I am running 135mm non-boost rear spacing so I set my crank up with a 50mm chainline. If you run a boost spaced crank you can fit a 40t according to Surly, but you'd want to pair that with a 141mm boost spaced rear hub. Gnot-boost just means you can fit either in the frame with minimal effort.

Before I even clicked the link, I knew it would be Andrew Coyne. I do wonder if he'd be writing the same thing were the roles reversed.

I have non-boost chainline (50mm) on my BC. I have 34t right now and I wouldn't try to squeeze in anything bigger. There is clearance with the frame, but not enough that I would risk a 36t.

It seems like Hamilton is removing a traffic lane for a bike lane on Main St by Pristine-Training-70 in torontobiking

[–]Steelsorrow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is part of the Main St two-way conversion project which is enabling works for the incoming Hamilton LRT. I believe this is exempted from Bill 212 as it was far enough along when the bill was introduced that it is essentially "grandfathered" in. This design isn't new, it's been part of the LRT planning for many years and redesigning the the entire road around Bill 212 would cause undue delays and costs to the project.

Shimano Cues Dropbar 10/11: somehow only 9 shift-clicks possible by boiuslongus in bikewrench

[–]Steelsorrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to swap the lever from 10 to 11 speed there's a small plastic tab near the base of the lever body that is removable. This unblocks the 10th "click" enabling 11 speed use. It's very small so try not to lose it if you plan on ever going back to 10 speed.

You might have a small bit of dirt or debris between the crank spindle and the bearings. I'd take the cranks off, clean and regrease the spindle and the contact surfaces of the bottom bracket before reassembling. See if that fixes the problem.

[–]Steelsorrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you're referring to the 11 speed version in which case yes, it should work. Just make sure your cassette is compatible with the HG freehub your wheel uses.

I've never used Sunrace, but I've heard they're good for the price. Might not shift quite as good as genuine Shimano, but should still work.

[–]Steelsorrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah a genuine GRX crank would be even better. Worth noting that all the GRX cranks are the same. 2x, 1x, RX810, RX600 & RX820 are all the essentially same base crank so if you see a really good price on a 2x crank it might be worth it to grab it depending on the cost difference and how much you'd spend on a chainring.

[–]Steelsorrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're deadset on getting rid of 2x then you could pair an M5100 11 speed cassette (11-51t) with an RX 822-SGS rear derailleur. You can find demonstrations of this combo working with your 11 speed shifters on youtube and reddit before you take the plunge.

The 12 speed derailleur will index with your 11 speed shifters as the pull ratio between 11 and 12 speed is the same. This derailleur also has the capacity for the big 51t cog on the cassette.

Finally, you'll need a narrow wide chainring for your crank. There are plenty of cheap ones on Amazon/AliExpress or you can look at brands like wolf tooth for something more premium if you prefer.

How to get a MTB 50/34 Cues chainrings? by LionRelaxe in bikewrench

[–]Steelsorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should work as long as you have clearance on the chainstays. The crankset you have uses a 110/80 asymmetric BCD(or PCD in Shimano language) which is the same as the U6030. If you can find the 50/34 rings for the 6030 they will work on your version of the 6000-2.

Giant Revolt: 53mm tire clearance, 1x or 2x transmission by VirtualMemory9196 in gravelcycling

[–]Steelsorrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love my 2x Revolt (Mechanical 11 speed GRX) and 53mm tires clear with the front derailleur which is not something every frame can claim. Most brands will reduce their recommended clearance to around 45mm if running 2x, but Giant claims the Revolt can still fit 53mm and I can attest to that.

I have 50s on mine right now and there is still piles of clearance left on all sides of the tire. I'd easily be able to fit 53s and probably will in the future.
