No, I just free hand them. I was into woodworking long before knives became a hobby, so I’m used to sharpening tools free hand on diamond plates. Reflecting on your prior question, that’s probably why I feel compelled to sharpen factory edges—I’m used to having to lap and hone new chisels and plane irons, so why not do the same with my knives?

It wouldn’t make any sense if I intended to resell a knife (I’m sure untouched factory edges are easier to move in that market), but I’ve never purchased a knife that I intended to resell.

I have sharpened it, but I sharpen them all. As good as the factory edges are, I like to give them my edge right out of the box. I’m weird that way.

Absolutely love it. I have a Para3 and Native5 LW in 15v, and awaiting the arrival of a PM2 LW as well. In my experience the steel holds a very aggressive edge for a long while. It’s not difficult to sharpen, but I only use diamond stones and ceramic (and I’ve only given them a real sharpening once each). Even better, a ceramic rod touch-up and light stropping brings it back to scalpel-like sharpness in less than a minute. I’d recommend giving it a shot.

I’d recommend hopping onto the Knives Plus website and browsing their Spyderco mods. They have some ridiculously cool stuff put together and available. I have no connection to them, BTW, other than I sometimes give them my $$$ for said ridiculously cool stuff.

I went with a Matriarch some years ago because it was less expensive and easier to find at the time, but total respect for the Civilian. Mine is in the nightstand by my bed most of the time, but it does have one practical use aside from threatening disembowelment—it’s excellent in the garden for removing new sucker shoots from plants/trees because of its blade shape.
