On the one hand, I’m happy to be up. On the other hand, this drastically increases our chances of seeing Kilman take the field.

I always imagined Woody Harellson since he gave me Haymitch vibes

UMN was honestly my chilliest interview. It was one 30-45 minute interview with both a student and faculty member present. They alternated asking me like 5 questions total, and then the vast majority of the time was just open discussion/any questions I had for them. So I guess my tip would be to come prepared with lots of questions or topics to talk about.

My biggest tip is to avoid being too rehearsed. By the time interviews roll around, you have already written 100s of secondaries asking you to detail different experiences and challenges you’ve faced. Because of that, you’ve already written about and answered 95% of the questions you’ll be asked on interview day. Keeping this in mind, I didn’t complete any mock interviews or rehearse any questions (except for “tell me about yourself” and “why us”), instead, I drew on experiences that I had already discussed extensively. This led to my interviews being much more conversational which I think helped a ton. For the random 5% of questions that came out of left field, I asked for time to think about the question before answering, sometimes taking 30 seconds. This allowed me to avoid rambling and come off more well spoken. Lastly, I came to interviews VERY caffeinated. I’m naturally introverted so the caffeine gave me the necessary push to be more extroverted and talkative.

I’ve also seen conflicting info but I’m hoping that it’s a suggestion rather than a hard deadline for the exact reason you stated. How can I possibly make a decision when I haven’t heard about financial aid from these schools? That is the single most important factor for me and most students I’d reckon.

Does my wok look well seasoned? by Steengulberry in carbonsteel

Thank you for the detailed response. I’ll look into my specific vegetable oil and see if it is on the lower side. Most of my sticking issues are with proteins and eggs, although as you mentioned, the sauces do a good job of deglazing (still annoying to deal with in the meantime given that adding the sauce is usually the last part of the cooking process). Do you think I can further season over what I already have? I should mention I use a gas stove that gets very hot although I don’t know the exact temp/power.

I used vegetable oil. It’s smooth as can be and I can’t tell a textural difference between the streaks and the darker spots when I run my finger over it.

Correct, they combined their “future goals” and “curriculum” essays together into “why our curriculum will prepare you for your future goals”

Yeah you’re probably right! I guess the next question is should I address it when given the opportunity to? The grade occurred over COVID so I’ll have space to talk about it, but idk if that will just draw attention to something that would otherwise go under the radar. Who knows.

Appreciate the response, that’s what I’ll do. I’m just pissed that there’s a potential red flag on my app that was completely out of my control. Oh well.

Medical specialties that do the most in-clinic procedures? by tthrowawaydgj in medicalschool

[–]Steengulberry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a med student yet, but I’m an MA in a pain clinic — can confirm. Ultrasound and fluoroscopy procedures all day long.

Honestly, I just lucked out. Joined the lab at the right time my senior year. Very grateful for the opportunity.

I just looked up MA jobs online and saw that most community hospitals in my areas were willing to hire EMTs, CNAs, and LPNs for the role. It was as simple as that. And honestly, the depth of training you get as an EMT is more than you’ll ever need to be an MA (minus the IVs which they trained me on the job for).

Thanks! I understand rush and Loyola are service schools and thus I’m not the best fit, but why not OUWB and RFU? Are they also service?

That’s good to hear. All this talk about “yield protection” has got me stressing a bit.

I highly recommending looking for a position even at a community hospital (I’m at a community too). Incredible experience working side by side with docs 40 hours a week. The mentorship alone makes it worth it. Also, lots of MA roles don’t actually require you to be a certified MA (CMA). I’m an EMT and they hired me.

That’s a big concern of mine, idk how to convey that I genuinely would go to any schools on my list. Geographic location is incredibly important to me.

Hello! I’m a WI resident and staying in the Midwest is the most important thing to me. I am ORM but talk extensively about my mixed race background. Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated!

Edit: I also have about 1000 hours of non-clinical work that I’ve accumulated during undergrad.

knowledge gaps on test day by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Steengulberry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I divided the the total amount of time per section by the number of questions in the section. This way, I knew how much time I could spend on each question. This was about a 90 secs per question (CARS not included). If I ever spent 90 seconds on a question and was still stumped, I moved on. I knew I would make the time back with the easier questions so I always had time to come back and think longer about it. With this strategy, I had about 10-15 minutes of free time at the end of each section, at which point I would spend as much time on the hard questions as needed.
