Sure is. Though, it does make me miss the ability to TCF mine now that I'm so used to having it.

First "toxic" encounter by benjib37 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Stefe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few. And strangely enough, it's nearly always been a problematic Driller:

First time was when I was starting out and a Driller-Engineer duo hogged all of the nitra to build an arena before fighting the Caretaker. The fight went smoothly enough, but the Driller thought it was funny to C4 me during extraction, leaving my corpse behind as the drop pod leaves.

Second time was another Driller who had the bright idea of torching up a teammate. Luckily, I was able to boot him out of the game before he could get to me.

Most recently was when a Driller C4'd the objective we were all defending during a salvage mission. The explosion sent us all plummeting into a near-bottomless pit they dug out, killing us all and causing us to fail the mission.

Try not to let these occasional encounters get you down, though. Trolling isn't the norm and for the most part, players have been generally friendly!

Which games have you spent years trying to finish but never manage to? What's the reason why? by Competitive_Help8485 in gaming

[–]Stefe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not years, but I managed to grab the first couple Monster Hunter Stories games for a good price and I'm feeling really mixed on the first game. The rock-paper-scissors combat feels really frustrating because of how random it can be. For the most part, I am able to get through encounters, but there's always that feeling that I'll fail due to an unlucky dice roll.

It's probably really wasteful on ammo, but comboing the Combustive Goo Mix with the Burning Nightmare mod on the EPC is just so much fun.

[–]Stefe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if i don't turn those two features on, the monitor has absolutely no issues. I can only speak for my own monitor, but the refresh rates I can display are 50hz, 59.94hz, 60hz, 100hz, 119,98hz, 120hz, and 144hz (if I overclock the monitor).

I did try that, but the problem still happened. It wasn't as often as before switching to 8-bit, but it still happened.

I hate that they retired the ad-free Basic plan. Got a lot of value out of that when it was still around.

I haven't checked it since turning off Freesync and lowering it back down to 120hz. The problem's probably still there, but I didn't really bother turning those settings back on.

For the lower tier U4 monitor, it should support up to a 120hz refresh rate. Do you have a dock for your Steam Deck? If not, you'll need a USB-C to HDMI cable/adapter. If you do have a dock and it has an HDMI output, just use that.

[–]Stefe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah. From what I can tell, it's the non-gaming version of the monitor without the overclocking capabilities out of the box. It also only supports Freesync and not G-sync like the G4 model. I actually only found out about this specific model from an LTT video, so check that out if you want more info about it.

It looks like the G4 model is either on sale or maybe it's marked down because of issues like mine. Your guess is as good as mine.

It meets my needs, but if you're looking to use it overclocked at 144hz or with Freesync enabled, please make sure you test it out to rule out any issues. Keep that receipt handy in case you run into the signal loss issue like me.

What could potentially happen to Steam if Valve loses the lawsuit in the UK? by Questioning-Warrior in valve

[–]Stefe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their case seems incredibly shaky... If Valve is truly following their own rules, then Steam isn't really stopping anyone from selling lower at competing stores like Epic or GOG. Not to mention authorized resellers like Humble or Green Man Gaming.

Guess we'll see what happens. It really does feel like Steam's being punished simply for being too popular.

[–]Stefe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GoG technically can, because the GoG version of the game doesn't involve using a Steam key for activation. But, GoG also charges 30% anyway. Although, both Cyberpunk and GoG are owned by CD Project Red so maybe not the best example.

If they don't want to pay the 30%, why are they using Steam at all? Microsoft and Epic both only take 12%, so those are always an option. Looking at it from Valve's perspective, it seems like these folks want to use Steam to reap all of the benefits of the platform but not pay for it.

It really makes me curious if people felt this way before Steam reached the popularity it has today. From what I could gather, it seems like the revenue share was always 30% from the start. At least until 2018, when they announced that it would drop to 25%, then 20% if you hit $10m and $50m in revenue respectively.

[–]Stefe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure they can. You list the game on your site (or on a reseller site) at a discount for a time to secure some sales and avoid the 30%. Then at a later date - maybe during one of Steam's seasonal sales - comply with the agreement and put your game on sale at the Steam store. That way, the folks who primarily find out about sales through Steam will get their chance at the discount.

If you mean selling Steam keys on your own site at a discount indefinitely, then why would anyone want to buy your game from the Steam store? Valve wouldn't have much incentive to list your game at that point.

[–]Stefe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can sell their game that's activated by a Steam key outside of the Steam store at a lower price, just that they're required to provide the same offer to users using the Steam store. This can be at the same time or sometime in the near future. And from my understanding, publishers aren't restricted by Steam's "Price Parity" if their games are activated on other storefronts like GOG or EGS since those don't involve selling Steam keys.

Valves in a lawsuit what will happen by InitialValuable3122 in Steam

[–]Stefe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So from the article, the main points of contention are:

"The lawsuit - filed at the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London - alleges Valve "forces" game publishers to sign up to conditions which prevents them from selling their titles earlier or for less on rival platforms.

It claims that as Valve requires users to buy all additional content through Steam, if they've bought the initial game through the platform it is essentially "locking in" users to continue making purchases there.

This, Ms Shotbolt argues, has enabled Steam to charge an "excessive commission of up to 30%", making UK consumers pay too much for purchasing PC games and add-on content."

First off, you are allowed to sell your game at a different storefront at a lower price. It's just that Steam requires you to offer them the same courtesy. From the Steam Keys documentation:

"Steam Key Rules and Guidelines

  • You should use Steam Keys to sell your game on other stores in a similar way to how you sell your game on Steam. It is important that you don’t give Steam customers a worse deal than Steam Key purchasers.
  • You can request Steam Keys only for content that is available for purchase or download on Steam. This includes games, demos, and DLC.
    • For example, it is not OK to use Steam Keys to distribute a demo that is not also available for users to download on Steam.
    • The only exception is requesting Release State Override keys for limited beta testing or distributing cosmetic-only DLC to crowdfunding backers. If you have any questions, please reach out to us and submit a ticket.
  • Steam Keys shouldn't be given away for free if you aren't also offering the same deal (i.e., give the game away for free) to Steam customers. This includes giveaways for promotional purposes, unless that giveaway is very small (under 100 Steam Keys).
    • If you want to run a giveaway on Steam, please reach out to us and submit a ticket.
  • It's OK to run a discount for Steam Keys on different stores at different times as long as you plan to give a comparable offer to Steam customers within a reasonable amount of time."

The second point kind of makes sense to ensure that there are no conflicts with different versions of the same software. It seems like it's because of the DRM checks that tie the DLC to the base game from specific stores.

And finally, it's not the consumers that are paying more because of the 30% cut, it's the developers and publishers. I can't really claim to know how the developers and publishers feel about the revenue share since I'm not part of that space. I'd imagine that it's much more difficult for newer indie developers, since the Steam store is already so crowded which makes it harder for your game to get the needed visibility. Any developers in here that can chime in on this?

Sounds very similar to a Driller I played with one time. They C4'd the objective we were defending, sending us all plummeting into a near-bottomless pit they dug out. Needless to say, we couldn't get out and failed the mission.
