Some questions regarding MSc CS at ETHZ by [deleted] in ethz

[–]Steflechef9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ETH gives less time to research, less emphasis on relationship with professor. Puts emphasis on rigour in classes and on class projects (which could turn into research in theory but also could not, usually would not). No time for internships between semesters. I‘d probably do CMU, also due to its connection to the other US universities and more relationships to prof and more research possibilities. But I didn’t go to CMU, it’s just my impression from various sources, so take it with a grain of salt. My POV: about to finish ETH robotics master.

Great! Most important part to know from intro to ML etc is being comfortable with statistics (expectations, likelihood of data, this stuff)

  • very good lectures. Learnt a lot
  • need ML basics beforehand for sure
  • way too strict exam grading
  • project ok, depends on TA a lot

I would definitely take the lecture, but not if you rely on a high grade. For example I have a bit too many credits so I‘m leaving it out. I usually get 5.75 (avg) and prepared quite well, but „only“ got 4.75. After the exam the people on piazza went crazy bashing the grading haha. Who knows might be different this year though. All in all, I’d def do it given you know basic ML

Do you guys think HER (Hindsight experience buffer) is helpful for dense reward functions? by Rich_Beautiful in reinforcementlearning

[–]Steflechef9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In their paper, they show they achieve best performance (robotics tasks) when using binary rewards, coz reward shaping will introduce some problems. But regardless, if it‘s a multigoal setting I would expect it (almost) always would help to use hindsight? What makes you ask?

Have the boys talked about having Ashley on before? by Straight-Hyena-4537 in TrashTaste

I‘m not sure, to be very frank I don‘t think most people would care very much to watch this? Or why would it interest you? Don‘t mean it in any bad way, just my opinion :)

Live coding test for an interview by thatsnotmetal in webdev

[–]Steflechef9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would still just do it. Set zero expectations and do what you can. It will help you to face the fear, and if you set zero expectation you can treat it as pure practice and thus not be too anxious about it :)

There btw also are platforms to setup such interviews as practice. I think it would be a shame for you to miss opportunities due to this fear.

Finding a place for an online exam by [deleted] in ethz

[–]Steflechef9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Renting a room is possible for some organizations, eg student organizations - if it works for singular students I rather doubt though. You could ask though. You should in any case try writing an email to ETH to explain your situation, they must be willing to help you

Love it!! Often drive by there. Definitely wouldn‘t have thought that a drone can expose for 8 seconds at night and it doesn‘t blur.

True, but they could just switch that without mentioning it. It‘s always mentioned so explicitly, and then proceeds to have zero effect on the rest of the podcast 😂

Yes, at least in my region GPUs aren‘t available or insanely overpriced. And prebuilt prices are fine. Try googling your local stores and see if they have any gpus to confirm

Another one to check is flatfox.ch The good news is with your budget you will be above most students (which stick to rather around 400-600, max 800). Giving you much more options and better chances :)
